Open Gameday Thread, 6/28
San Francisco Giants at Oakland Athletics, Jun 28, 2008 6:05 PM PDT
Pre-game trivia time on this sunny and smoky Lincecum Day.
The Best Damn Sports Show recently aired a show of the 50 most bizarre sports plays in history. The Giants figured prominently in four of the 50 entries, including two of the top ten.
Name those plays. Bonus points for singling out the two that were in the top ten.

here goes...
Mitch Barehand
JT saves Dusty Junior
Ruben Rivera gone wild
The Big Ugly Bird Explosion
Man, I am sick of losing to the A’s.
I'll go with JT Snow saving Darren Baker and Ruben Rivera running the bases...
as the 2 in the top 10.
most bizarre in sports history?
I love the Giants, but how they can be in the top ten at all eludes me. Sports history includes things like The Play and La Mano De Dios. Even being blown off the mound doesn’t top that stuff.
this is a night game, isn’t it?? Why the early gameday?? And I know it’s Timmy day, but this Duscherer has been awesome this year. Timmy can’t win if the Giants get shut out.

I dunno – in yesterday’s gameday thread, I learned it was possible to have a lower on-base percentage than batting average. With that in mind, getting shut out and still winning seems almost possible.
I’m too lazy to go look this up – how is it possible? I noticed that one of the Padres (or was it one of the Twins) had this feat, but couldn’t work out how they achieved it.

I just want to say, again
How fucking irate I am about this goddamn Sat evening gametime bullshit. Saturday afternoons are made for doing stupid fucking chores around the house, or changing your oil, or fixing your bike, and LISTENING TO THE FUCKING GAME ON THE RADIO IS THE ONLY THING THAT MAKES THESE CHORES BEARABLE. So fuck you, FOX. Fuck you right in the earhole.

Sorry guys, I disagree. I like the night games on Saturday. It’s the only way we get to watch it on Direct TV. Otherwise it’s the Fox blackout. I guess it’s a pain for the younger guys who like to go out on Saturday night, but us older guys with the families like to spend our Saturday nights watching baseball. In fact, my plans for tonight is seeing The Hulk and then coming back and watching the game. Hulkamania running wild baby!! Oh sorry, wrong Hulk.
Brian Sabean's new dad: Firm believer in corporal punishment
exactly
that’s why fuck FOX. If the MLB hadn’t signed this retarded deal that gives FOX exclusive rights to broadcast from 1-4 or whatever, then we could have regular afternoon games and broadcasts.
Grrrrrrrr.

Agreed to a certain degree. My prob is that Padres games are almost always night games, and I have season tickets down here… so instead of seeing Timmy vs. The Duke, I’m going to be watching the last place Mariners vs. the last place Padres with the girlfriend. !@#$^x%x I might just bring my XM and headphones…

Can you believe the only win we’ve had against the A’s in the past two years was thanks to Matt Morris? In a complete game affair, no less.
Saturday and Sunday
With Lincecum and Sanchez pitching, Saturday and Sunday are as good as any day to begin to beating the A’s.
Best Damn
It was Rivera & his base running + Kevin Mitchells bare hand catch.
John Millers call is so funny during that base running debacle. I laugh everytime I see it.
Absolutely. Jon pulled no punches that day.

And the ANSWERS ARE:
strictly from memory
4) Mullholland tosses glove and ball to first for the out.
3) Kevin Mitchell making the barehanded catch.
and in the Top 10
2) Randy Johnson vs. the feathered friend and Giants in spring training game.
1) Keystone Cop Rivera bumbling around the bases.
Yay!! Wendell Fairley with his first two hit game today. Get him up here!!
Brian Sabean's new dad: Firm believer in corporal punishment
Mixing pitches
but he seems to be having control problems. He’s missing locations which is unusual for him, but his line still looks pretty good so far.
Bumgarner just finished 5
Seems to be using his curve ball alot. He was having some control issues, but still pitched well. The defense behind him was atrocious. Culberson committed 2 errors in the inning, 1 of which was a double play ball he let go through his legs. Bumgarner had the runner at first picked off but Villalona dropped the ball for the 3rd error of the inning. Bumgarner had to get 5 outs in that inning.
Only ten? Psh… those aren’t “top prospect” numbers. Shouldn’t he be breaking records by now or something?

The best part is, he entered the game AS A PINCH RUNNER.
Also hilarious is the fact that he was once regarded as a top prospect.
Oh, and also, when he was with the Yankees, he stole some of Derek Jeter’s equipment (a bat and helmet, I think) from the locker room and sold them to a sports memorabilia dealer. So, yeah, he was a real success story all around.
Yeah i read that
sounds like a class act. Seriously, even in his position, he’s gotta be making at least like 300k/year. Really? You’re gonna steal something and hock it for 2 Gs when you’re a major league player?

I met the guy who makes those. He lives in Davis, and seems pretty normal.

Thas what i mean
there’s no room for him. Even if one wanted him to play over Winn, that means that he’s stealing time from Horwitz. And Rowand’s going to play, and I wanna see freddieeee.
I don't miss him
or Morris.
Adieu to all that.
No chance even against
an ass-over-teakettle-impaired Lince
No
we didn’t really have any room for him. I just liked his D and baserunning, is all.

You might be right.
Which means: What a crap year.
That Thomas’s commercial just made me irrationally angry

Yeah, I was shocked too.
They did a couple days ago anyway

The wonders of the 2008 NL West.
Has there ever been a division where everyone finished under .500? I vaguely remember it looked like that might happen several years ago, but I don’t recall if it actually did.

Today you can
and it’s no shame against that batboy on the mound
;-)
a sliding changeup
invented by our young mound genius
well, this is actually the first Tim start I’ve watcehd this year, but that looked more like a change than a slider to me.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
Is this a running gag?
because you say “this is the first [insert topic of discussion here] game I’ve watched this year…” and I’m sure you’ve been here for Timmy games before…or do you mean on TV?
on TV. they don’t show Giants games in London :(
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
After my experiences with mlb.tv last year, I decided I wanted no part of it this year.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
I like the mosaic
lets me keep tab of every game. I havn’t had too many problems, but I have an ungodly fast connection
I think the biggest difference between these two teams
is that the A’s are much better coached from minors up to the majors than we are

Retraction demanded.
I hate all sportswriters
Especially in the BA- Ratto, Kawakami, Jenkins, Knapp- god damn, they all suck soo hard.
Does Bayless still write for the Merc? Whenever I see him on ESPN I change the channel. What smirky dbag.
I do too
God, I fucking hate him so much. It’s not the kind of hate that he wants, either. It’s the kind of hate where I wouldn’t be upset if he was hit by a bus tomorrow morning

Yup
“Aaron Rowand: Barry Bonds would love to prove that he’s still the greatest show on Earth, and for those couple of minutes he spends in the batter’s box each game, that is undeniably true. Rowand – the epitome of hustle, self-sacrifice and team spirit – is why the Giants don’t miss Bonds. For those other 23 hours and 58 minutes of the day, take Rowand every time.”
Idiot.
