The so-called A's Giants "Rivalry"

A giants fan comprehends the fact that the Los Angeles Dodgers are THE team you are supposed to hate, THE team that you are raised as a child to absolutely despise, THE organization (including fans) that is your rival with numerous historical incidents, fights, and fiascos. I can't even begin to rant about how Oakland Athletics fans completely blow the so called A's Giants "rivalry" out of proportion. First of all, there is know history of bad blood between the franchises, I didn't know that close proximity of two teams battling for the same area's fan base and television station fuels a rivalry. I truly feel that Athletics fans wish and yearn for the storied history and tradition of the San Francisco Giants, which is why they pick an argument with me when I rock my fitted 7 1/8 SF cap to the Oakland Collesium. Honestly, I could give a horse's ass about the Oakland A's, the only time I give a damn is when they play the Giants six times a year (in the bullshit interleague part of the schedule, but that's a different argument).  Basically, what I'm trying to get at is that there really is no rivalry, I don't feel the same way about the A's as I do the Dodgers, and I definitely don't want to.  A's fans, however, WANT a rivalry, which is why they make a big deal "when the Giants come to town" (hehe, Bye Bye Baby lyrics) and also of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, but that "rivalry" digresses back to (of course), Giants-Dodgers, Northern California-Southern California. Go Giants!

I’ve never really gotten it either. Same goes for the 49ers and Raiders. Your playing in a different conference (league too), and have little to NONE history playing against each other in any meaningful games. Yes there was a Bay Bridge World Series, but there was an Earthquake and the Giants were soundly beaten by what should have been a Dynasty team.

So really other than exhibition games and then interleague, which have all been meaningless games, WHY IS THERE A RIVALRY?! Yes, SF vs Oakland….whatever. This is why I never take the NYM/NYY, ChiC/CHIS rivalries and LA/LAA seriously. Who gives a shit right? Give me LA/SF, Bos/NYY, and stuff like that.

Same goes for the Raiders/49ers “rivalry”. Nobody cares if you beat us in the preseason. Go back to the Black Hole and play Halloween elsewhere.

Its not my fault your team is so lame (Oakland) that you can never get decent attendance even when you win. Like the 70s A’s teams that won 3 World Series in a row and only drew 1 million fans like 1 time. And even then they were like in the bottom rung of attendance for the league. Pathetic. That’s why your on low rate TV, and change radio stations every 2 years and not to mention have TERRIBLE announcers. The funny thing is I know of A’s fans who bitch about things like this.

Same goes for the 49ers and Raiders.

No, I hate the Raiders for practical reasons. When I was growing up, the 49ers were the only team that was covered in the Bay Area media. When the Raiders moved back, the 49ers had to share half of the coverage. Screw that, and screw the Raiders.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. The only thing really just can’t stand about the A’s is their fandom (not to be confused with their fans, specific).

I like the team. I like rooting for my local area teams. There’s no legit sports rivalry in any way. Everything the one-sided “rivalry” (which is to say, they view us as rivals, but not vice versa) is about boils down to inane pettiness. Waaa, you have an old stadium and we don’t. Waaa, your teams win and we out-draw you… Waaa… Waaa…

I know several season ticket holders for the A’s. They will tell you, there is no rivalry, we are in different leagues. They have no rivalry that compares to Giants vs Dodgers with any team. Granted the Yankees and the Red Sox piss them off, but they pretty much piss off everybody.

If there’s no rivalry, how come I’m 3000 miles away in New York and I hate the A’s?? For me it goes back to the 1989 Earthquake series where those roided up bastards swept us, and Jose Canseco talked all that trash about Will Clark because he didn’t hit homeruns like McGwire and Canseco did. Of course he didn’t!! He was actually using his God given talents. I also hated that the A’s were able to use their number one and number two starter over again because of the seven day delay between games two and three. That was the big advantage the A’s had over us, and they were able to exploit it to the max. And I also hate that the A’s made the World Series three times in a row in that era and 1989 was the only year they were able to win. I couldn’t even console myself with the “better team won” logic, because on paper the A’s were better than the other teams they lost to in those years. They’re 4-0 against us this year but have yet to face Lincecum and Sanchez, who they are facing the next two days. And don’t think that those flag waving bastards you see in the stands there aren ‘t the same ax murderers who paint their faces and worship the devil and go to the football games. That’s them in disguise!! Fuck the A”s fans, fuck Billy Beane for being smarter than Brian Sabean, and fuck the fucking A’s players!! Oh yeah, fuck Glen Kuiper too for being brought up as a Giants’ announcer in the Giants’ organization as the younger brother of a true Giant, and now being so fucking happy when “his” A’s beat the Giants. What did you think the Giants’ would put you in the booth eventually when you’re so freaking boring?? (I was over my fuck limit so I went to freak for the last line. If I wasn’t over the limit I would have went with fuck that arrogant, boring motherfucker)

it pissed me off for years when the Giants were contenders for the division and wild card that we had six games with the A’s and our other competitors were off playing the Rangers, Royals, or the Devil Rays. How the hell can MLB not care about teams having unfair advantages?? I mean the Dodgers had the Angels who are also contenders, but we were facing Zito (when he was good) Mulder and Hudson and the Padres were off going against some 100 loss team. Maybe I shouldn’t take it out on the A’s, but what the hell.

See, it’s not like the Athletics franchise isn’t a storied one. This is charter A.L. franchise. Why they don’t embrace this image, I don’t know, because there is some great history there. Especially against the (NY) Giants in the Series. They should really play their pre-Oakland traditions up. Perhaps they are waiting to do this until they move into a suitable facility, if that ever happens. Perhaps then we will see a soothing of the nerves of the meathead Athletics Supporter, a persona I find more and more common—and out of place with the storied traditions of of this fine sport.

Have the A’s ever played up their Philadelphia tradition? I’m guessing no. Probably because they were in the cellar for more than 2 decades before they moved to KC. But still you would think they would take some pride in their history.

I certainly won’t tell anyone how to root for their team, but for me as a Giants fan to not embrace what happened in New York, with the Giants, the Gothams, any incarnation of the Giants from the moment the franchise was created, is like throwing out the Old Testament of the Bible and saying “old meme.” From what I understand there’s a ton of history and good shit from the Philadelphia and Kansas City days of the Athletics franchise. I can’t really fathom not digging into that.

Well, I wouldn't "ignore what happened" necessarily,

I just don’t think A’s history pre-Oakland is all that big a deal. I’m an OAKLAND A’s fan … not a Kansas City A’s or Philadelphia A’s fan. That’s all.
I love history, so I think all of baseball lore is cool … but I’m not going to make a huge deal about the A’s history in other cities.
You don’t see the Braves making a big deal of Boston or Milwaukee … you don’t see the Rangers making a big deal of Washington. Perhaps if a team hasn’t won a championship in their current location, “history” becomes all the more important. Perhaps.

I never understood the not embracing their past by sizable chunk of the A’s fans.

It kind of made sense in the ‘70’s. Charlie O probably wanted nothing to remind his new fans that he had recently left a city with a long tradition of supporting baseball ( K.C.) But after he sold the team it baffles me. I mean about half ( all right maybe I’m exaggerating a bit) of the Battling A’s started in K.C. If you don’t know who Connie Mack was and call yourself a baseball fan then you need to do yourself a favor and read up him. It’s just seems such a waste.

I have to admit my bias, of course ...

I am a die-hard A’s fan (since ‘71) ... but I wanted to say that I think Mr. Clutch is 100% correct. It’s funny, but there’s no doubt “A’s fan” hates the Giants much more than the other way around. What’s fascinating to me about it is, I’ve spent a considerable amount of time in Chicago and New York, and the same kind of attitude exists there, as well.
In New York, Yankees fan couldn’t care less about the Mets - he hates the Sox - but Mets fan completely and passionately despises the Yankees. In Chicago, Cubs fan doesn’t really sweat the White Sox - he hates the Cardinals. But White Sox guy hates the Cubbies with a passion.
What I think happens is, the “step-son” mentality kind of kicks in. No matter how much A’s fans (myself included) whine about our “lack of respect”, the Bay Area has always been and will always be a “Giants town.” New York is a Yankees town, and Chicago is a Cubs town. The other teams fans can hate it all they want - it’s just the way it is. And I think that’s the reason why you see A’s fans seem to take the “rivalry” so personally, when Giants fans hold their anger until the Dodgers come to town.
Just my two cents. Good luck tonight (not really.) God, I hate you guys. LOL

The funny thing about that, is in New York there were legitimate claims to 3 teams. So in a way the Mets are like the 4th child or step son to a family that already had 3 children.

There are still tons of Dodgers and Giants fans in NY who grew up with those teams only to have them move away. And obviously they weren’t going to switch over to the Yankees, or the replacement Mets.

The A’s as an organization don’t bother me, except when they run their sour grapes ad campaigns. They used to have a sign off the Bay Bridge I thought was pretty funny, though: Playoffs. Do you speak Athletic?

Ultimately, though, they’re just a super-duper sour grapes organization that’s extremely bitter that the Giants have been able to get a nice stadium, larger crowds, have a radio station and TV deals that get all our games on the air, and are generally a far classier organization, despite the A’s building better teams recently. Sour grapes. Just… Sour grapes.

But their fans, as far as I’ve been concerned, are a bunch of jackasses. I was at a Giants-Rockies game recently, and some dipshit A’s fan was sitting in the front row, showing off his hat and mouthing off. He almost got into ten different fistfights, and people constantly threw stuff at him. It was awesome, but I would have given ten pence just to see him tossed over the railing. Dark as that may seem, I’ve got an unpleasant streak in me.

I still will say it’s a BS deal they get on media coverage, with so many of their games not on TV, no radio station completely devoted to them the way the Giants dominate KNBR, and that. It’s totally unfair. But are Giants fans to blame? Absolutely not. So why the pissy mood toward us?

Because they aren’t gonna win anymore anytime soon. So they brag about the ones they won 30 fucking years ago. And that one they one in 89’. Again. A long ass fucking time ago. They have no other rivals and no other teams care about them so they have nobody to brag to that really cares. So they try to brag to us, even though we don’t genuinely care about them. Their fans get on my nerves sometimes....

I go to A’s game about 7-8 times a year (don’t worry, I wear my Giants colors), just because I like baseball and the tickets are so much cheaper. I go to see Ichiro, Sizemore, or to heckle Manny Rameriz. A useful tool to anyone who has trouble with A’s fans: right after their “Let’s go Oak-land (clap clap clap-clap-clap)” chant dies down, stand up and cup your hands around you mouth. In your loudest, raspiest voice, give them the “LET’S GO FREE-MONT….. LET’S GO FREE-MONT” chant. Who knows if that stadium ever gets built, but I enjoy pouring salt into that wound. I also enjoy suggesting loudly that any team that has to tarp off their upper deck should have their world championships taken away. It is also fun to make fun of the Mulder, Hudson, Zito, Swisher, Dye, Hatteburg, Tejeda, Giambi, Isringhausen, Kendall, Foulke, Haren, etc shirt jerseys the fans wear.

That said, I hate the Dodgers 10000000x more than the A’s or any other team. I don’t even really mind the A’s that much as an organization, but their dumbshit fans need to be put in their place.

Say it with me now…... LETS GO FREE-MONT (clap clap clap-clap-clap)

Yes, the A’s have a lot of retarded fans. So do the Giants, the Red Sox, the Dodgers, the Angels, every team does because people in general are just dumb.

Except the Rays, buts that’s because they don’t have any fans at all.

For me, at least, it’s the FANDOM, not the fans. Every fanbase has more than their fare share of dumbass fans, and some varying percentage of intelligent fans. But there are pervasive attitudes that by-and-large accompany FANDOMs, and the A’s have a pretty annoying one. So do the Red Sox, Dodgers, and Angels.

In fact, that would likely be my top 4 if not for the Cardinals. And if not for me not having the bad encounters with Yankee fans that everybody else seems to. And if not for me probably forgetting a few.

It's funny, I can't stand A's fans, generally...

But to be perfectly honest, I hate Dodger fans and Red Sox fans FAR more.

Ultimately, this relegates the A’s to second class citizens again. This time of my hate. Well, at least A’s fans know they’ll always be considered second rate.

In my experience, Giants fans don’t have much hostility for the A’s, and usually will root for them against other teams. It’s the A’s fans that ruin it, because we practically get blindsided with their Giants antipathy. Seriously – we forget that you don’t like us.

I think the

reason why the As OWN the Giants on the field is philosophical. Giants are always loaded with free-swinging hackers, and pitchers who don’t (can’t?) throw strikes. So the obvious way to beat the Giants is:
1) Never throw strikes
2) Never swing
