OT: Shawn Chacon
First: This piece is moderately amusing. Here is a more truthy story on the goings-on.
So, which MLB team is shameless enough to pick this guy up? Initial signs point to the Yankees.
Any thoughts on the matter? Latrell Sprewell jokes? Discuss.
Also, is there a less savory job on this country than working for the MLBPA? I'm a die-hard union man, but you gotta wonder how some of these characters sleep at night. Guy chokes his GM, in direct contravention of the terms of his contract. Guy gets released. Players' Association files a grievance on behalf of the choker. I dunno, I'd personally have a hard time feeling good about that.

both. Friend in SD said they were interested over the off-season, and they don’t mind headcases.

SD doesn’t go after the criminal types right after the fact. That would disturb the “clubhouse nirvana” that Alderson and Towers have been building with the Bad News Mads.
Ted Leitner likes his chokers with a smiley face and a pleasant gamer demeanor.

I think you are onto something here.
Also didn’t the Yankees already have Chacon at some point?

I’d point Chacon in the direction of Ray Ratto and his Hardy Boys friends.

To quote Lois from Family Guy:
“Crystal Meth is one helluva drug.”
And while we’re on the Family Guy theme, this just came to me…Ray Ratto looks like the character Bruce since they both wear awful sweaters and facial hair. Plus it’s inclined that Bruce is gay…just saying!

I actually had a bet on Chacon with the Yankees. I thought he would pitch well, and my friend told me I could have one night with his wife if his Yankee ERA was less than 4.00. He wound up with an ERA of 2.85!! My friend?? He welshed.

That isn't the whole story
It doesn’t excuse the physical attack, but Ed Wade was shooting his mouth off like the little numbskull shithead that he is. Chacon should have ignored him (or verbally abused him) instead of choking him, but who the hell does Ed Wade think he is?
by North Side Chicago Expatriate Giants Fan on Jun 27, 2008 9:26 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
This is a very good point. Wade is a grade-A asshole and has stuck his foot in his mouth more times than I can count. Someone mentioned this on a blog; it’s a mystery why Wade doesn’t get punched in the face every time he shows up at Minute Maid Park.
Chacon is clearly a nutbar for going off the edge, and has effectively ruined his career. Hey, I hate a lot of people I work with too, but if I gave into my violent revenge fantasies, I’d be banned for life as well. It’s no different for this guy either. Do what I do, call them “cunts” in your head and then vent over drinks with friends after hours.

Funny you should mention this. My first impression on reading the account in the Huston Chronicle was the whole "Chrissie" Everret vs. Jim Rome thing.
" Their still Shitty" - Major Leagues the movie.
I am a Giants fan. Thus I enjoy my pain. Currently enjoying it more then usual.

Nothing excuses what Chacon did, but everyone has their boiling point to some degree. I do know that everyone in Philadelphia would probably be willing to buy Chacon drinks until the end of time for what he did though. Ed Wade is one of the worst GM’s for any sport in a long time. Also if you instigate and escalate a fight with someone who has a distinct size advantage and then get your ass handed to you, you deserve what you get.
by Hobbes2d on Jun 27, 2008 11:15 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Ed Wade probably thought he was being to be the Alpha Male by trying to show up Chacon. Then again, Chacon’s season has gone into the crapper and I don’t think he was about to be belittled by the GM of the team who is a the definition of an ass clown. I really don’t care if Chacon didn’t handle this in the appropriate manner. This was a situation where Wade took it upon himself, where he could have sent another employee of the franchise, to send for Chacon for a meeting in the manager’s office. But Wade decided to lite the fuse himself and Chacon went off like a nuke. Sometimes the wicked do get their just desserts.

Geoff Blum was on the San Diego morning show giving his third party account of the throwdown and it’s highly amusing. You can listen to it here.
In summary, Blum basically said Chacon shouldn’t have done it, but Wade goaded him into it, like Wade’s manhood was challenged.
The best part is Blum saying “It was like watching career suicide…”
by Ed Jew on Jun 27, 2008 11:32 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
That is HILARIOUS
Perhaps a bit more credit is due Ed Wade – he apparently didn’t fly off the handle initially. For those who didn’t listen to the audio, Blum says that Wade originally asked Chacon calmly to come into the manager’s office. It was only after Chacon’s refusal that Wade went into dumbass mode.
Wade could have simply remained calm, listened to Chacon’s refusal, and proceeded directly to DFA for insubordination. Instead, he goes tough guy on a much bigger man and gets his ass handed to him, which I think he richly deserved.

Charlie Murphy goes without saying
Getting schooled by Prince at basketball and then going for pancakes is still damn funny. It’s almost too bad that the Rick James skit was so funny, because nobody talks about the Prince one.

One man’s crazy is another man’s treasure. Chacon will find another team. Look at Sidney Ponson. He attacked the pitching coach in Texas and was released, and now it’s all hail Sir Sidney in New York after he pitched six scoreless against the Mets last night.
