Watching Giants Classic Games Makes Me Want To Kick A Puppy

I'm watching a freaking Will Clark at-bat during a game in 1991 at the Stick.  I just finished watching fire-hydrant-roider Armando Rios hit a walk-off against the Rangers in 2000.

I say this because it's truly depressing to watch some of these players against the state of our current team.  Not so much the 91 squad but watching a telecast of a Giants game in 2000 is truly sad to watch.

The crowd roars.  Actually ROARS when something good happens.  It was sold out every night and Kruk/Kuip are contantly announcing Arizona scores (because we were in a race for first place, BTW - the game in question was played in June....).

It's depressing because I remember putting such stock into that team in that year and it bums me out how quickly I forget what it was like, really like.  I went to a ton of games and watched every other game on tv.  That being said I could watch Giants Classic games ALL DAY.

Was it really that long ago?

I watched those games too and know exactly how you felt. It’s hard to believe we actually had legit home run hitters at one point. Every franchise has its down periods, right? *sigh *

No more Bonds

He added so much excitement. We did have other better players, but his presence alone excited the crowd. An excited crowd is going to be more reactive.

good team in a pennant race >>> bonds as far as the excitement factor goes.

wishful thinking? perhaps, but think about how quiet the Bell got in an average, non-milestone game last season. Winning isn’t everything nor the only thing, but it’s most important by a lot

"he walked 18; new league record! Struck out 18, another new league record! He also hit the sportswriter, the PA announcer, the bull mascot twice..."

I’m not sure that we did have better players. Not position players, anyway. We did have other players, though. I’ll give you that.

Suffering through this down time will make our next good team more enjoyable.

Also, having direct tv and not being able to watch any of these classic games makes me want to kick something.

Speed, defense... and an almost fanatical devotion to getting picked off.

They’ve been showing some classic games on CSN during certain times. Keep an out out for that.

I have Direct TV and I get CSN all day long. Why can’t you watch the classic games?? I’ve been able to see them. By the way, I got married that year and my wife took me to SF as a sort of present. We were at that Armando Rios game. It was the most amazing thing in the world to me, because when he hit that walkoff and the game ended, the fans didn’t want to leave. They just stayed in their seats cheering for what seemed like an hour. For me, an SF Giants’ fan who has spent his whole life in New York and only going to games against the Mets where my team was booed, (not to mention the obscene chants directed at our leftfielder) it was like I had truly died and went to heaven!!

They have some old games on OD, but the ones they’ve been showing on CSN are the top 10 Giants games ever or something like that.

It kinda bums me out to remember the good ol' days...

Bonds as the most feared cleanup hitter of all time just hitting his prime, Kent being a big fat pussy but still getting the job done… But I guess we had our run of success and we now have to go through the imminent run of failure afterward that can only be prevented with a Yankee-sized payroll. Off topic, but would it be good karma to root for the Rays? I’m actually pretty happy for them that they finally managed to draft their way into success after a freakin decade of never winning over 70 games. And it makes me very, very happy to see them above the Yankees. Goes to show that money isn’t the only thing that builds a team…

I’ve liked the Rays even before this year when they’ve suddenly become Contenders™. I say root for them like you’ve never rooted before!

I don’t want to kick puppies. I love seeing the old games. I wish Comcast would make all of these “classic” games available on On Demand permanently. It was awesome getting to watch Ellis Burks in action again. He was awesome in 2000.

What if they’re hyperactive yappy puppies? I always thought a kick was the perfect way to teach ‘em what’s what about yapping in face like a jerk.

Yes, kicking hyperactive yappy puppies is fine. Nobody likes yappy dogs. Especially those little ugly ones that go in purses that just bark all the damn time.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 27, 2008 11:28 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

They bark all the damn time because you should be walking them, not carrying them, and they’re restless and improperly cared for. I blame “dog as cosmetics” owners for those little balls of horror, and happily kick those people.

Dogs that are actually yappy as breeds, though, they live in kick city.

My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

Oh, man I hate those dogs. I normally love dogs, but I can’t stand those and the people who own them.

If it can fit in a purse when it’s fully grown, it’s not a dog, just some unfortunate freak of nature that’s just asking to be punted downfield.

I remember when we got Burks that year. We were in Philadelphia at the time, and the deal seemed to perk the Giants up so much that they went out and swept the Phillies by blowout scores even before Burks got there!! If I remember correctly, they couldn’t get Marvin Benard out that series. It seemed like the trade really lit a fire under his behind.

Seeing the infield from that year was what got me. Snow, Aurilia, Kent and Mueller, that’s some got baseclogging, and not a little pop.

you can't block the Bocock

by oldjacket on Jun 27, 2008 7:14 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

except

that year Snow still hit for power. And Kent and Aurilia always hit more than 20 HR’s. Shit Kent won MVP in 2000.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 27, 2008 11:27 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

“Not a little pop” means they could hit for power.
