If you condition pitchers to throw more innings and pitches then there’s no reason to worry. The way they continually baby pitchers today is a travesty. Yes there is an investment of money, but the idea that you can prevent injuries via a pitch count is pretty ludicrous.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 24, 2008 6:28 PM PDT up reply actions

It’s also ludicrous to try and stretch a guy for another inning with a fresh bullpen. A guy who threw less than 100 innings last year.

by xanthan on Jun 24, 2008 6:29 PM PDT up reply actions

For me it’s not the exact number of pitches; it’s the overall effort and the probability that he wouldn’t have good stuff if he came out again. Especially with a fresh pen.

He threw 75 2/3. And even if you are right that pitchers need to throw more, that isn’t something you do by having Sanchez blow away his previous IP high and throw more stressful big-league game pitches. That’s something you do every day over a year of throwing on the side

If he gets hurt, he gets hurt. Injuries are going to happen, regardless if someone threw 120 pitches or 98.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 24, 2008 6:30 PM PDT up reply actions

pitchers who hit 120 have a statistically significant tendency to sharply decline in effectiveness in their next couple of outings.

by oldjacket on Jun 24, 2008 6:33 PM PDT up reply actions

It’s not a risk. Yes their effectiveness could wane, but if they’re conditioned properly there would be no problem. The whole game today is pretty much a joke when it comes to the way that they baby pitchers, yet most of these guys end up blowing their arms out ANYWAY.

Nope. Look at Lincecum. Is he babied? No. And the kid has never had any problems. He doesn’t even ice his fucking arm. He is mechanically sound and in peak shape. In fact the Giants pretty much let him alone because Lincecum and his father’s regimen has worked for him so well they’re too afraid they’ll fuck him up.

Look at Merkin Valdez, tell me what pitch counts have done for him. Oh wait his arm is hurt ANYWAY.

Guys used to throw 250-300 innings year in and out all the goddamn time, some got hurt, but plenty others remained effective for a long time. And these guys didn’t even train for baseball year round like they do now.

by xanthan on Jun 24, 2008 6:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Everyone should be trained by Lincecum’s dad, but he is odd and unique. That comes from years and years of throwing, too – not one offseason of workouts.

And you really can’t just point at individual pitchers who have been hurt and say “SEE HE GOT HURT PITCH COUNTS ARE STUPID.” That is like saying “THERE’S NO GLOBAL WARMING IT IS COLD TODAY.”

Guys used to throw 250-300 or more innings, but tons of guys were injured and couldn’t handle it. Only the guys who had the conditioning and genetics to handle the workload were able to do it.

Why not work Sanchez up to the higher PC and innings? Even if you don’t agree with the many studies and are going to stick with the “LET MEN BE MEN AND PITCH!!1” argument, wouldn’t you rather be safe, protect Sanchez, and let him exceed innings and pitch counts when the team isn’t in June of a season of suck?

by North Side Chicago Expatriate Giants Fan on Jun 24, 2008 6:48 PM PDT up reply actions

If there was reasoning to think that him throwing more would lead to injuries than sure, protect him. But there is not.

And isn’t the object of the game to win? If we’re so afraid of injuring our young talent than maybe we should just encase them in carbonite for 5 years until this team is playoff competitive then.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 24, 2008 6:52 PM PDT up reply actions

the game’s a lot different now then it was back then. And again, college innings don’t really count towards future injury risk.

But let me put it this way. If we’re wrong, Tyler Walker gets a few more innings, if you’re wrong it could ruin the careers of the only bright points on this team.

by SF Pete on Jun 24, 2008 6:54 PM PDT up reply actions

They’re lower stress. Pitchers face hitters of less quality, meaning less pitches, less stress induced to get the out. Also, pitching in front of 30,000 is a lot different than pitching a home game in college on a Thursday night in front of 200 people.

by xanthan on Jun 24, 2008 6:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Right because the amount of people in the stands really changes the situation for the pitcher trying to WIN a fucking game and trying to get hitters out when they get into a tight spot.

If a guy is that concerned with the crowd he probably has no place being in the Major Leagues to begin with.

by jponry on Jun 24, 2008 6:58 PM PDT up reply actions

Nothing was ignored. The first part is inconsequential really. Top prospects may be facing “lesser” talent in HS and College, but they are still works in progress themselves. Its not like they’re ML ready at 18 or 20 years old. Especially pitchers.

They still throw way too many pitches in HS and College, even with inferior talent they are facing. Mostly due to the fact that they are indeed amateurs.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 24, 2008 7:01 PM PDT up reply actions

I’m telling you its a different environment, thus, it creates a different response from a pitcher.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 24, 2008 7:04 PM PDT up reply actions

They’re still on a baseball diamond. Its not like they’re pitching in a jungle. There levels of responses aren’t going to be that different from college to pros because of the attendance. That’s a ridiculous assumption.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 24, 2008 7:03 PM PDT up reply actions

I don’t know about you Hobbes, but I’m guessing pitching a game in front of a full house in Yankee Stadium is pretty different (in terms of the stress it might generate with a player) than pitching a Sunday Night game in college in front of 50 people.

by xanthan on Jun 24, 2008 7:05 PM PDT up reply actions

The venue is the only thing that is different. The game is still the same. I really don’t think its going to change anyone’s response levels. Certain people can handle pressure, and others can’t. That usually has to do with any kind of tense situation though. Shouldn’t matter too much whether they play in front of 50,000 or 10,000. If it does, than obviously they’re not going to be very successful.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 24, 2008 7:07 PM PDT up reply actions

So, environment has nothing to do with anything? Really?

by xanthan on Jun 24, 2008 7:12 PM PDT up reply actions

It can, but my point is hopefully you would have players that aren’t going to be concerned with such things, and rather have people that can focus on the game.

Which is why I said, if somebody is that concerned with the crowd they probably have no business playing anyway.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 24, 2008 7:18 PM PDT up reply actions

I’m not sure I buy it though. I mean for the typical college player in a given college game he’s still facing the best competition he’s ever faced in the most intense environment he’s ever played in.

Speed, defense... and an almost fanatical devotion to getting picked off.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 24, 2008 7:04 PM PDT up reply actions

by xanthan on Jun 24, 2008 7:05 PM PDT up reply actions

but I assume Sanchez wasn’t nearly as good in college as is he is now.

Speed, defense... and an almost fanatical devotion to getting picked off.

He was decent. He threw 4 no-hitters for a NAIA division team.

by wilriv21 on Jun 24, 2008 7:21 PM PDT up reply actions

But that’s beside the point really.

If you take some of the worst MLB players and stuck them in college, they would destroy everyone. Just as if you took the lower tiered college players and put them in HS, where they were likely stud players.

Like Pete said, they are facing the best competition they have ever known up to that point in time.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 24, 2008 7:11 PM PDT up reply actions

by oldjacket on Jun 24, 2008 7:07 PM PDT up reply actions

that’s what Will Carroll concluded after doing a study: there just wasn’t much of a correlation between college workload and future injury risk. Same deal with the minors but to a lesser extant.

It could be that the type of dominating pitchers that go on to the majors, just don’t need to use their A+ stuff to get every guy out in college.
