Chulk Gone

This is great because Chulk has been garbage lately and it allows us to bring up a young reliever and continue to develop a young pen. Romo is up from AA. Hopefully he will continue being dominant. I dont think anyone wants Chulk so he might end up back in Fresno but not likely. The last part of the Accardo trade has gone. another memory we all wish to forget about

There’s no way he’s getting through waivers. Someone will take Chulk. He has a 1.295 WHIP, 8 BB vs. 16 K, he’s cheap, and only 29. He was fine last year. His problem is like Misch’s – a small sample of homeritis.

and not coming back
Chris Haft reports that, even if he goes unclaimed, he won’t accept a demotion to Fresno. I actually think the Giants may regret this one, but it isn’t really worth getting worked up over. I expect he will regain his early-season form somewhere else.
eh, he'll never be better than mediocre at best
there are plenty more relievers on the way
thats why he is middle relief. He migth 1 or 2 nice seasons but it willbe more then a handful of bleck!
we mght regreat it some but i seriously doubt we will be kicking ourselves over it.

I am a Giants fan. Thus I enjoy my pain. Currently enjoying it more then usual.
I have a feeling Chulk wouldn’t have been so hated if he weren’t part of the Accardo deal. He wasn’t that great this year, but he’s not as bad as most have made him out to be.
I have a feeling Chulk wouldn't have been so hated if he didn't suck so much
or blow every lead and win oppurtunity he could as long as Matt was pitching.
I must admit, I’ll kinda miss all the Chulk jokes.

Accardo is hurt, but man was he lights-out last year. That’s the new Sabean pattern – trade a pitcher, have that pitcher put up dazzling numbers for one year, and then have the pitcher go down with a nasty injury.

Well, so far he has had a good record trading players that have typically broken down. With notable exeptions such as Nathan.
TBH, I’m more annoyed by the fact that the players we got mostly sucked, and less annoyed by (short) success of one of the trading chips..

Really?!?
How do you explain this one then?

What about him? It’s his first good year in 4 years. He was just ok with the Cubs I guess. But for a guy that was supposed to be the first guy to the big leagues and make an impact right away after being drafted he wasn’t very good. All of those Rice pitchers have been huge disappointments so far.
Could it be that maybe we didn’t give him the time, nor necessary guidance to grow into the serviceable player he is right now?
How our organization manages to toss away promising young talent, only to replace it with table scraps is beyond me. The name of the game is buy low, sell high….not fuck off with your young players and can I interest you in yet another savvy vet.

How long was the organization supposed to wait? Sure, using anyone with a pulse to trade for LaTroy Hawkins was not a good decision. Still, Aardsma was OK in 2006, really bad in 2007, and now in nearly half a season has had success with the Red Sox. Not even half a season! And he still walks too many guys – 5.8 BB per 9 innings!

Goodbye Vinnie
I never thought you were all that bad, but whenever I would express that you would start to suck.

Odd Timing
Matos has been pitching better than Romo lately….not sure why Romo gets the call…
Romo
As Sergio’s duly recorded adoptive father, my heart swells with pride. After the custody hearing ends in my favor, he’ll be able to enjoy playdates with his other brother, Matt Downs.

WTF?
You can’t adopt two dudes at a time can you?
While I’m on the topic of adoption, would anyone like a pre-owned Omar Vizquel? He’s really shiny, can dance a mean foxtrot, and oh ya…he’s won a few of them golden doo-dads.
Anyone?
Buehler?!?

It wasn’t that pressing an issue. Why not trade Chulk first, before waiving him and getting something, THEN bringing up Romo.
Yeah, there have been reports going around for weeks that most of the bullpen was tradeable. I’m sure they made calls before designating him.
All-Father Watch: 1.05 ERA, 7 saves, 0.87 WHIP, 34 Ks in 34 1/3 IP
Does it matter?
Someone has to pitch in blowouts. I think Chulk may have come around next year, not to win the Cy Young, but to mediocrity.
His main problem was pitching when games mattered… someone needed to take Henny Panny’s spot at the end of the bench, and “Gas Can” did that well, uh, horribly.
So, to restate, meh.
I'll do ya one better
I can think of a crafty vet with zero command and a not so dominating curveball that could fill that mop-up role quite well.

Very meh
Whatever. He’s had a few terrible outings lately, and, other than that, his stay here hasn’t been bad. I think he will fit very well in the middle/towards the back of a bullpen somewhere. I don’t think he deserved to be DFA’d by a team this bad, but I don’t think this is going to make a difference in the next two years of trying to compete.
The Giants seem to think they have plenty of young arms who can come in and contribute in the near future, and I agree. A DFA though? I don’t see any reason why they couldn’t have tried to let him bounce back a bit and then deal him for a ham sandwich.
Bengie Molina: stretching doubles into singles since 1998.
Vinnie’s overrall career with the Giants wasn’t that bad, but you just couldn’t put him into a close game. I remember him coming over from the Blue Jays making a comment about how he is most successful when used in middle relief. I was kind of surprised when he said that, because I was expecting him to say (as most relievers would) that he would love to be a setup man or closer. His lack of confidence in himself was telling.
Brian Sabean's new dad: Firm believer in corporal punishment
another failed sabean trade
and he still keeps his job….amazing
On this note, Sabean seems relatively keen on dropping players for nothing when they come as parts of trades that didn’t go his way. Chulk is another in a growing list of guys who were parts of unsuccesful Sabean moves who we could have gotten a lot more value out of than we did once Brian decided it was time to sweep the evidence out the door.
Note: This is to say that any value is a lot more than none.

would you rather he kept Chulk?
i dont really care either way but you have to make some room for the young relievers on the way and i dont think Chulk is much of a loss..
no....i wanna see the kids play
and we have alot of live arms down on the farm….
so shoot, dfa walker while you are at it
the fact remains, chulk never shouldve been on this team
we didnt need him, when we had the exact same model, just in a younger version
it was a stupid trade
and its par for the course
i keep hearing on all the sports shows how teams are so quick to fire their gms and managers
not this org…we keep our trash
maybe DFA walker - i wouldnt mind that either...and Roberts
it would make a statement that this team is looking to the future and the olds guys had better bust it if they want to be a part of it….
i didnt like the Accardo trade either, but its over…
if you look at the entire tenure of Sabean, i think
he deserves till the end of 2009 to get things headed in the right direction, and there are already some positive signs..and Bumgarner, Alderson, and Sosa may not be too far off…
Bochy was fairly well-regarded as manager in San Diego and was given some credit
for putting together a decent bullpen there…im not saying he’s some great manager, i think he’s middle of the pack, and he’s certainly a hell of an upgrade over Felipe IMO…..
DFA Walker?
Who’s gonna take his place?

Seriously?
How about:
1. Romo (already there)
2. Matos
3. Espineli
4. Pichardo
5. Hedrick
6. Waddell
Your 2011 SF Giants: the 2008 Augusta Greenjackets!
Is there some compelling reason that these guys need to be in the majors? Is there some urgency I’m not getting to starting their arbitration clocks? I mean, a 4.55 ERA from Walker isn’t all that great, but it’s not awful enough to kick him off the team. I don’t really see the point in change for the sole purpose of change. Chulk had to go because he was awful. Walker has to go because he’s had 4 really bad game?
Trent Kline: Decentish. Also, my website is called ChatterBalks Dot Com and on it I make jokes about things.
No compelling reason, but there’s nothing about Tyler Walker that causes me to wish to hold on to him. If Matos is ready, let’s give him a shot. Heck, the guy I probably should have included is Adam Cowart. As DrB pointed out last year, Cowart is what is already….he’s not really “refining his craft” in the minors. Let’s get him up to SF and see how he does, if a spot becomes available. And, to me, Walker’s spot looks pretty available.
Your 2011 SF Giants: the 2008 Augusta Greenjackets!
Well, bringing up Romo wasn’t exactly a pressing situation, and Chulk’s value was probably only capable of going up. Would a few more weeks to let something potentially shake out have made any negative difference in any way…? Not in my opinion at least. If Chulk continues to suck, we’re still losing and Romo’s not stunted at all. If Chulk does something worth trading for, we get some value out of the guy.
This way he’s just completely sunk.
My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

yeah true, i just doubt if you'd get much for Chulk even if he's pitched decently
it seems like all year long we’ve been complaining that they’re not playing the young guys and hanging on to some vets that we dont need….Sabean takes a step in the right direction here, IMO, to move forward into the future…i would have rather they recall Matos, but no big deal….hopefully the word is coming down from the new managing partner to get rid of some this dead weight, maybe Dave Roberts gets cut next….
Farewell, Puka Shell Necklace
(you know, because he’s a choker. Heh.)
DFA all Giants over 34 years old.
Romo will be 2nd player from Giants 2005 draft class to debut this year
first was Hinshaw. this was the draft that the Giants didn’t have a pick in the first 3 rounds. We lost picks for signing Benitez and Omar. Romo was a 28th rounder from Mesa State College.

i thought Benitez was a decent roll of the dice at the time
that was the last year the Giants had a reasonable shot at it, so i didnt mind the Vizquel and Matheny,
Alou etc. signings…
So you're saying...
...that if we’d had our first two picks in 2005 instead of giving them up for FA signings, we might have actually had a good draft class, and could possibly be getting help THIS year from our farm system, instead of waiting primarily for 2010 and beyond?
I agree.
Your 2011 SF Giants: the 2008 Augusta Greenjackets!
Well
Omar wasn’t a terrible FA signing. By that logic, the team shouldn’t sign FAs at all, because any FA signing is going to affect the draft negatively.
