A Cadaco Game of Today
Young memories of playing the Cadaco board game makes me appreciate what a more sophisticated game could be like today. The Clasky family of Chicago created the GreatPlay! baseball game. At $20. they aren't making money just sharing what makes baseball great. When I was losing the spinning of the Cadaco game I always resorted to "Hey, lets go out and play whiffle ball".
Can anyone put a date to this Cal/Giants game?
Living for a time in Berkeley I would enjoy going to the Cal Bear baseball games. Besides seeing Bonds and Elway play there in college I remember when the Giants did a pre-season game against Cal. What I most recall is Mike Sadek making the team laugh as his foul ball broke the window of the nearby athletic office building. One can only imagine what Bonds would have done with Evans diamond in his prime.

I don't feel so old now.
I have no recollection of any board game not called Risk, Monopoly, Life or Chutes & Ladders…
/Hated CandyLand.
Down in Front Meat!
It was all strat-o-matic baseball all the time for me. I just loved that game. My friend had APBA baseball and I couldn’t stand that game. All the pitchers were rated A through D, and if a D pitcher was pitching well, he would go up to a C pitcher late in the game. I would argue with him all the time that pitchers get tired as the game goes on, they don’t get better!! To me, Strat 0 Matic blows away any video game ever created!!

I used to play the baseball and football board game versions. Apparently, they now have a online version. You can play the demo for free.

I didn't have S-o-M as a kid, but read about it as an adult
Actually, Jon Miller’s memoir, “Confessions of a Baseball Purist.” He was talking about playing it on the plane with Orioles players during his days as their announcer. He said a young Cal Ripken would occasionally show some interest in the game as Jon played with others, eventually asking to play. Jon said he killed Ripken that first time, then Ripken thought and thought, and became more thoughtful about strategy and how the elements of baseball fit together, and from then on was unbeatable.
So several years ago, I bought a set, and several extra sets of old teams cards (1993 Giants, 1931 Philadelphia Athletics, 1975 Cincinnatti Reds, 1986 Red Sox, etc.)... and I rounded up one of my intellectual non-game-playing friends, and we played exactly once. We fumbled our way through, consulting the instructions all the time, and basically, it was kind of dull and we were never sure we were doing it right. But I remain very interested in learning how to play it, as EVERYONE I have ever heard of who has played it has loved it.
Maybe we could have a McC Afternoon of Strat-o-Matic? Some of the savvy veterans could teach the eager neophytes?

Cue the tumbleweed blowing across the screen. SOUND CUE: loud wind
It’s been 36 hours since I posted that. I think there is not a groundswell of enthusiasm for Strat-O-McCoveyCon 2008.

Nah, everyone just came over to my place to play Wii instead.

The baseball game that has stolen my heart is MLB Power Pros for the Nintendo Wii. It’s just like real Giants baseball with avatars that look like and move like their counterparts. Except with these Giants, it’s fun and I don’t lose.
Highly recommended for anyone who likes video games.

I just don't get Wii
I mean, I have a real baseball bat, and I can go outside and hit real baseballs. I don’t need to stand in my living room and pretend I am doing so.
When I play video games, I want to do so sitting on my ass. If I didn’t want to be sitting on my ass, I would be out doing something other than playing video games.
Consequently, I don’t play or own any video games either, haha.

All my friends live far away, so it’d just be me standing in the street with a bat and ball looking sad.

It’s not just about mimicking crap, though. The Wii is about increasing the overall interactive potential of gaming. The most obvious translations of that have been “Wii Sports” type games where you do actually mimic real life actions, but it goes further than that and most of the games you actually do play by sitting on your ass.
But any problems with the Wii start with the developers, who have put a surprisingly small amount of effort into building quality games over gimmicky games. The Wii has awesome potential for FPS interactivity, but so far the only developer that has really taken advantage of that has been Nintendo with their Metroid. Wii Ware recently came out to give smaller developers a hand in the game, and they seem to be answering the call a little. Games like Lost Winds, Defend Your Castle (yes, THAT Defend Your Castle), and Worlds of Goo all take creative and enjoyable advantage of the interactive elements of the Wii, all while allowing you to sit on your ass while you play them.
Many of the criticisms about the system are actually criticisms that lie with the game developers. Some of the criticisms seem to have to do simply with the fact that people are uncomfortable with enjoying a different kind of gaming.

I’m not trying to convince you, though. Clearly gaming is just not your thing. I just don’t like the idea that the Wii doesn’t make sense because it’s just about mimicking junk. It’s about more than that.

Plus I really like how there are several controller configurations out there. You can go Wiimote and nunchuck, or Wiimote and classic controller, or GameCube controller. It’s just so versatile to allow the user to adapt with whatever setup they like best.
Me, I like the Wiimote and nunchuck for most games but I plan to go GCN controller for Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. The well known config will suit me well for the RPG game.

MLB Power Pros
Is it way too easy for you? I loved the story/rpg or whatever mode where you “develop” yourself as a player. I couldn’t stand how easy the franchise mode was, though. I haven’t played it since the first month I owned it, I think.
It is pretty simple, but I like that it’s accessible to me. I tried the other sports sims and just lost interest because the controls are too complex for my liking.
Also I just got my Wii like a week ago and I have a life so I only escape to Wii a little here and there. Things like homework and housework and cooking and sportswriting come first, sadly. :/

Have you accidentally thrown your wiimote yet?
Protip: Wear the strap, no matter how dorky it looks.
Ha, I even wear my strap when I’m playing Mario Kart.

I’m teaching my grandmother how to do the bowling game on Wii Sports, so we wear the wrist strap at all times. No flying Wiimotes yet.
