Leftfielders
Who at this point would you like to see playing LF?
How about if the Giants trade Winn, move Lewis to RF, and let Horwitz play LF?
Horwitz: <Horwitz hasn't wasted any time making his name as a hitter, hitting two home runs in his first 13 major-league at-bats. Since being called up from Triple-A Fresno on May 30, he's 7-for-24 (.292).
In 425 minor-league games, Horwitz compiled a .319 average, winning batting titles in the Northwest League in 2004 and in the South Atlantic League in 2005. Baseball America dubbed him as the player with the best strike-zone discipline in the Giants' organization, so his immediate success hasn't surprised him.>

Lewis.
Lewis.
If the Giants move him out of a position that he’s excelled in for a singles hitter, I’ll be mad. Hortwitz won’t hit for power.
Left Fielders in the NL by OPS+ (Min. 250 PA’s)
Cnt Player **OPS+**
+----+-----------------+--------+
1 Pat Burrell 151
2 Jason Bay 142
3 Matt Holliday 141
4 Ryan Braun 129
5 Adam Dunn 126
6 Fred Lewis 122
7 Carlos Lee 120
8 Skip Schumaker 111
9 Juan Pierre 74
Juan Pierre still sucks.
I think with his glove (He’s the 2nd best LF in the NL right now by RZR) and stolen bases (13 steals out of 17 attempts) you could probably move him past Adam Dunn for the 5th best LF in the NL. Maybe even closer to Braun.

I agree
I’m not sure I understand this poll at all. Why so intent on moving Lewis to RF.
I think most people would agree that you keep Lewis in LF and move Nate to RF if Winn is dealt.

Yeah, Lewis is hitting and I wouldn’t monkey with whats working. The ideal scenario, like you stated, is to trade Winn and stick Nate in RF.

Now you know...
Schierholtz was drafted as a 3B and spent his first pro season as a 3B. However, there was question whether he could play there long-term – I don’t recall what the problem was but it was close enough that BA hoped the Giants would allow him to continue there to see if he could – but the Giants decided otherwise and moved him to RF, where he says he has enjoyed (but what else is he really going to say?).

Should Nate be left out?
I believe Nate Schierholtz should be the Giants’ left fielder, since Freddie Lewis has more range for the difficult right field in AT&T. Nate has the stronger arm—but not as much speed to cover ground and outrun his mistakes.
If Fast Freddie can improve his center field play (He was moved from center two years ago due to fielding difficulties there.), I wouldn’t mind seeing Freddie in center, Nate in right (to take advantage of his strong arm) and Aaron in left, where his so-so arm would be less challenged and his waning speed wouldn’t be tested as much.
Aaron won a Gold Glove last year, but I didn’t feel at the time that he deserved it. He has shown nothing this season to change my mind.

Just because I love Pilling on Dodgers.
Pierre this year decides 29% of his P.A.’s in 2 freaking pitches. Think about that a bit for a veteran guy that hits mostly at the top of the order that is horrible. And this is not a new trend. Last year is was 39%. Mean while Lewis decides 23 % P.A’s decided in 2 pitches this year . Pierre has only had a 400 SLG or greater season twice. And this a player the started in Coor’s were the ball is light and the outfield huge.
So I ask the assembled brethren here this: Is Juan Pierre Agents Ned’s best move yet?

OK, “Inside The Coke Bottle”. Are you just screwing with us now? I thought your original post was a little goofy, but now you’re trying to make the point that Lewis is a bad outfielder. If that’s the case, why are you lobbying to move him to RF, which is a harder position to play, especially at AT&T?

Funny RZR has Lewis 2nd of NL left fielders.
3rd in all MLB.
Considering Pct is heavily based on a score keepers opinion what is a reachable ball ( like traveling calls in the NBA) and RZR is more a mathematical attempt to gauge what Left Fielders (as a group) seem to get to when a ball is hit in certain areas I would give the RZR a bit more weight. Being third in RZR tells me Lewis is very reliable at converting reachable balls into outs. He is tied for 8th in MLB for Left Feilder OOZ plays ( getting to balls the were hit out side the area left fielders usually get to) shows his range is good.
The methods he uses may not be pretty or text book but the results are there. I would label Lewis solid but unorthodoxed.

Improving
Fast Freddie has struggled with is fielding in the past, but somehow he seems to have improved since his first month or so with the Giants last season. He has the speed to outrun many of his mistakes.
Just a so-so arm.

Agreed.
Which might lead to an interesting discussion in say 2 winters. On if Lewis’s improvements can out pace the loss of speed he should have in his 30’s combined with just how long Rowand keep patrolling center field well.

Horwitz gets a lot of OF assists, he can play right this year, and let Nate compete with all of em next year.
No need to move Fred now as he is getting good in left.

We are looking at a pretty small sample size for Horwitz. This guy has won batting titles but my gut is telling me there is a reason he has been in the minor leagues for so long. 2 hrs in 13 abats is pretty impressive for someone who usually doens’t hit them even in the minors. I want to see a little more of Horwitz before giving him a position
I would rather not move Lewis. He has established himself in left field and is hitting consistently. If Winn gets traded, bring up Schierhotlz and let him and Horwitz platoon in right field until there is a winner.
Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

Brian can hit
Brian Horwitz can hit. I think he can hit for a higher average than any other Giant, with Nate Schierholtz next in line. But Brian isn’t a center fielder, and he has always lacked the secondary skills of hitting with power and of getting on base in ways other than a hit.

I don’t think Freddie’s arm is particularly strong, and I don’t think his accuracy is much above average. His throw home on the fifth Royals’ run on Sunday reminded me of Barry Bonds against Sid Bream. Except that Barry’s slightly-off-line throw made for a very close play, while Freddie’s horribly-off-target throw wouldn’t have gotten the runner if he had had three more seconds in which to do so.

RF Bowker or trade or FA or Horwitz, if necessary
1B Bowker or trade or FA
4th OF Horwitz
I like Horwitz – he’s a Cal Man! He doesn’t have much power though, and that means no starting in a corner OF spot.

speed vs. range
Lewis doesn’t have the range to play RF, not at AT&T. He is a perfect example of how great speed doesn’t automatically translate into good range. He does not read fly balls well, which leads him to take poor routes on balls. So long as he is a Giant, Lewis will be primarily a LF.

by StickRat on Jun 24, 2008 8:14 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah, about RF, you're probably right
i was more concerned with him just being able to improve his defense whether its LF or RF, wherever…theyve been saying this about him for quite awhile as he was rising thru the minors, that he should be better defensively
by slojoe on Jun 24, 2008 10:24 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
He's been great
but his BABIP is still hovering around .375. Yes, hitters have more control over their balls in play, and guys with Speed are definitely prone to higher BABIP rates, but I don’t think Lewis can sustain his performance without cutting his K’s down.
In that same breath, I love that Lewis takes a lot of pitches (4.22/PA) which in turn will often lead to a fair amount of K’s. Lewis is due to fall a degree, but I’m thinking he has a decent chance at .275/.360/.445 with 25+ SB’s. Do I dare say he could be comparable to the overrated Carl Crawford? I’ve personally always pegged Lewis as a poor man’s Crawford (less SB’s and avg, but much better plate patience). I think in terms of overall production (taking into account Crawford is a great defensive LF) I bet Lewis might not that be that far behind (this year he’s certainly ahead)

Are we drowning out opinions on this site? 2 People voted for Winn. 4 for Velez. Why? Mistake? Don’t trust Lewis long run? Want Winn to showcase his versatility? Think Lewis has trade value, so trade him and bring up Nate for RF (shifting Winn, unless one trades him too, creating room for Horwitz and Velez?) What are you people thinking?
