Ishikawa to Fresno, Sandoval to CT
From the Chron:
The Giants have promoted some notable minor-leaguers. First baseman Travis Ishikawa, who had 24 at-bats in the majors two years ago, is going to Triple-A Fresno after hitting .291 with eight homers and 48 RBIs at Double-A Connecticut. Catcher and first baseman Pablo Sandoval, 21, will move from Class A San Jose to Connecticut after dominating the California League with a .359 average, 12 homers and 58 RBIs.

happy/sad!
Happy that both kids got well-deserved promotions. Happy that I got to see Pablo play the other night in SJ. Sad I will miss him when I see the Lil Giants play the Ports in a coupla weeks. Happy I’ll get to see Pablo and TI in Fresneck.

TI is given the token promotion in a ways. I doubt unless he becomes the PCL version of Joe Mantle, his figuring in the franchises long-term plans are about ten points better than Bonds’ right now.

I will
He has disappointed, to be sure, but he is one of the rare guys in the Giants system who really has the talent and plate discipline to be a star.
I would like to think that the problems he has had are mental, and that his talent has taken over as he sheds those issues.
What I don’t like seeing is that he was promoted “after hitting .291 with 8 HR and 48 RBI” at AA. What does that mean? Even the Giants aren’t going to promote based on those numbers. I would like to think that his .382 OBP and .462 SLG – at Connecticut – are what got him promoted.

One thing that seems fairly constant the last couple years ( aside from this years “a” league SS fetish) if the front office chooses the player with the better k/bb ratio going. At least when they called up Notgardo, Figueroa etc that was the a characteristic they seems to share over other options. Might be an accident. Might not

I am at the point I don’t care what made them do it – presuming its intentional- but that they might actually be doing it.
The additional caveats
1)I did not look at other option for the Bowker call up. I kind of assumed he or Timpner were the only 2 choices with Nate dinged up at the time.
2) I don’t have any comparisions saved were i can find them to back up my claim. Thus i would not auotmatically treat this as fact.

But wait...
...they called up Timpner and then swapped him for Bowker four days later. Did Bowker’s K/BB ratio improve dramatically in those four days and give him the edge over Timpner?

TI and Pablito played well the first part of this season and the fact that they each were repeating their league probably added to the decision to promote. What about EME?

It sounds like a reggaeton group..No matter, I’m looking forward to reading about the both of them tearing shit up in their new leagues. I do think that this means the Gigantes are about to make a decision on Brett Harper (if as I recall he plays the same position as TI) and he could get a call up soonishly, depending on how the Notorious O.R.T is treated after he comes off the Big League Disabled List..

They probably just find space for the three of them in Fresno.

the only way McClain gets called up is if Aurilia gets dealt. Now would certainly be the time to do it, since Aurilia’s batting average is as good as it’s going to get.

Is going to go first to a league where he’s likely to have success (wouldn’t want their top pick to stumble at High A Ball off the bat…Once he’s finished the season at that level, he’d probably be be placed in SJ to start next season (assuming he rips shit up at his first stop). I'll bet....
Good money Posey starts with a pit stop in Augusta. They give him two or three weeks there to get warmed up and give the GreenJackets a boost in attendance and they move him to SJ just in time for him to be a major factor in the ‘Lil Gigantes run for another California League title. Posey could be this year’s Denker for SJ, just that Posey would garner much bigger headlines in this effort.
Given SJ’s impressive pitching and now that Sosa and Otero are there, if Posey were to land with the team would anyone else think that they are a serious contender for MiLB franchise of the Year with a strong postseason?

Well he’s likely to have success anywhere he starts. He was arguably the best college player in the country last year. Players of that caliber should have no problem beginning in high-A. And at 21, he’d already be older than several players already on the roster (Alderson, Schoop, Tanner, Sandoval?)

Yes and no. There was some hype around him when he first started in the NWL a couple years back. I seem to recall that there was a story floating around that he was ambidextrous and threw from behind the plate with either arm. I don’t think anything came of that, but in my mind he was always a C+ prospect with a ton of potential. I had liked him enough to rank him #16 on my 2006 Giants Preseason Prospect list, though that was partly due to a weak Giants system.

Other Call-ups imminent?
With the promotions of Ishikawa and Sandoval along with the rumor-mill seemingly abuzz with the “to-be” promotions of Rohlinger and Snyder are any other promotions imminent? More specifically I’m inquiring on the status of a certain AA reliever who seems to constantly be overlooked…
Osiris Matos
Why does it seem that the Giants hate this guy? Is there anyone else in the organization more deserving of a promotion that Matos? His numbers speak for themselves as he is currently dominating the Eastern league to the tune of:
1.05 ERA
34 K / 34 IP
20 H / 34 IP
3:1 K:BB Ratio
0 Homeruns Allowed
So why isn’t he in Fresno yet?

I think he must have run over Sabeans’ cat or something like that because i don’t understand the negativity over his handling. Hopefully he’ll be called up to Fresno shortly, especially given the state of the current Fresno bullpen!

Third time's a charm, maybe?
This is his third time in Connecticut and the Giant were agressive with him, jumping him from Augusta to AA in 2006 when he finally did well in Augusta repeating. He frankly didn’t do well in his previous runs in Connecticut. Only 43 K in 56 last season (6.9 K/9) and 2.0 command (that is, K/BB), plus 0.5 HR/9 (at a park that decreases power/HR by 30-40%, meaning he’s only average in that way), so he was hardly dominating last season.
Maybe the Giants want to see him do it for a full season in Connecticut, reliever’s stats are notorious for small samples wide swings. Plus, he’s only 23, next year 24 and at Fresno, in 2010 majors at 25, not so bad if he can continue the progression.
It’s not like he rose up the charts with a bullet, he has had his bumps and bruises rising up the systems. He has risen from the dead, as a prospect, twice now, so it was certainly not a smooth rise. My prospect book only rates him as potentially an average player. So I see no problem if they decide to let him prove that he can do this in AA for a season before they promote him, just to be sure it’s not small sample success.

Risen from the dead
Well played, sir.
I don’t have a problem with easing a guy in to professional ball. Lincecum is a good example; short-season A, then a bit of high A, then minimal AAA before being called up for good. Granted, Lincecum is an amazing talent, so it was a lot easier for him, but it’s a good idea to start a guy lower before pushing him aggressively.
What bothers me is that the Giants have been starting guys low, keeping them low for quite some time, and then VERY aggressively trying to push a guy straight to AAA (or the majors). Yes, our AA park is screwy, but that’s the level where most prospects prove themselves. Given the number of retreads and AAAA roster filler in AAA, many teams don’t want their good prospects to spend much time there. Apparently, some bad habits can be gained in beating up on AAA hitters and pitchers who have clear holes in their games that are preventing them from sticking in the bigs (no real out pitch, can’t hit a real slider, etc). In the PCL especially, batters can get homer-happy, which doesn’t necessarily work out so well going from Fresno and Colorado Springs and Tucson to AT&T and Petco.
Bowker is a pretty good example. He made the progression through the lower ranks of the minors and then spent little time in AAA. If there was a good reason to keep him in AAA, it would be to work on his plate discipline, but is he really going to do that in AAA? I don’t see a lot of guys making the big leap and figuring things out in AAA. It seems to me that those things happen earlier in the minors, and Bowker appears to be making adjustments and improving against big-league pitching. The Giants have the “luxury” of being able to let Bowker learn in the bigs, and in the end, he isn’t going to have the need for additional adjustment from AAA to the majors.
As for Matos, I think you are right in needing to look at K and BB rates and adjusting HR/9 to that ballpark. A guy can probably get away with slinging FB down the middle at Dodd and watching the fly ball die at the warning track, something that isn’t likely to go over well in the majors.

Jesse English
The Giants have six starting pitchers in San Jose. Apparently Ben Snyder is being promoted after the All-Star game. I would promote Jesse English too, as Jesse is approaching 24 in three months and has been unscored upon in four of his last five and six of his last eight starts.
Jesse’s career has been slowed by injury, but he needs to get moving (upward) if he is to remain a prospect.
Kevin Pucetas is another San Jose starter who needs to get his career headed upward as he continues to keep his ERA downward. Kevin turns 24 around Thanksgiving, but he has hurt his cause with three poor outings in his last four starts.

Because Snyder has the history and peripherals of domination
I think the biggest reason is this is Snyder ’s second year of over matching hitters. If you compare his numbers between high a and low a there is not much of a change (drop in k’s from 8.5 to 8, but an increase in innings per appearance of a third) This is English’s first year back as a starter after extended injury issues. That said, i would not be surprised if they moved another starter to Connecticut because Bumgarner has nothing left to prove in Low-A, and hopefully will find himself in San Jose following th all star game reshuffle.
by OmahaGiants on Jun 23, 2008 1:58 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
If Bumgarner can dominate High A anything like he has Low A, I wouldn’t mind seeing another promotion to AA later in the year. Then he can start at AA next year and try for a promotion to AAA and a cup of coffee in the bigs come roster expansion time. Then in 2010 – major league rotation!
