minor lines, 6/20/08
AAA: Fresno lost at Sacramento 8-2
Fresno: LF Eugenio Velez: 1 for 3, 2B, BB
Fresno: RF Nate Schierholtz: 1 for 4, HR
Fresno: 3B Julio Cordido: 2 for 4
Sacramento: DH Casey Rogowksi: 2 for 3, HR, 2B, BB
Fresno: RHP Nick Pereira: 4.1 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 4 K--2 HR
Fresno: LHP Erick Threets: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 3 K
Cordido had two of the Grizzlies' six hits, raising his AVG just above .250. In the last three games of the series, the Grizzlies managed just a dozen hits total. Velez also reached base twice but was thrown out for rounding second base too far on his double. Schierholtz led off the 9th inning with his 11th HR. The A's 27-year-old Rogowski, who used to be a prospect for the White Sox several years ago, had a big game, including his 10th HR.
Pereira threw a low percentage of his pitches for strikes (56 of 101) and was tagged for six runs as nearly half the batters he faced reached base against him. His ERA rose to 5.76. Threets pounded the strike zone, with 20 of 27 pitches going for strikes. His K/BB ratio in the PCL is now above 1.00.
AA: Connecticut defeated New Britain 4-2
Connecticut: 2B Kyle Haines: 1 for 2, 2 BB
Connecticut: DH Olma Rosario: 3 for 4
Connecticut: RHP Nate Bump: 5.0+ IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 1 K--1 HB
Connecticut: RHP Justin Hedrick: 2.0 IP, 1 BB, 2 K
Connecticut: RHP Sergio Romo: 2.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K--1 HR
Rosario had three of the Defenders' seven hits, raising his AVG to .318. Haines also reached base three times, improving his team-leading OBP to .416.
Bump had his most effective start of the year, although his K/BB is now just barely over 0.50. In relief of Bump, Hedrick stranded both inherited runners and improved his ERA to an even 2.00, while Romo's ERA rose to an even 4.00. Is Hedrick, who is less than a year older than Romo, the better prospect based on these ERAs?
A+: San Jose defeated Visalia 8-5
San Jose: C Pablo Sandoval: 1 for 4, HR, BB, SO, PB
San Jose: DH Andy D'Alessio: 2 for 3, 2B, BB, SO
San Jose: RHP Tim Alderson: 3.1 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
San Jose: RHP Steven Edlefsen: 3.0 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 3 K--1 IBB, 1 WP
San Jose: RHP Danny Otero: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 K
Sandoval connected for his 12th HR, a three-run shot in the 5th inning. D'Alessio, one of three Giants with two hits each, improved his season line to .309/.354/.508, although his SO/AB ratio remains above 30%.
Alderson had perhaps his least effective start of the year. At least he had not allowed more than 4 ER in any start since the beginning of May. His ERA rose to 3.29. With three scoreless innings in relief, Edlefsen brought his ERA back below 3.00. Otero made his Cal League debut and earned another save, the 38th save of his pro career among 48 appearances.
A-: Augusta lost to Asheville 1-0
Augusta: CF Shane Jordan: 1 for 4, BB, SO
Augusta: DH Angel Villalona 1 for 4, 3 SO
Augusta: C Jackson Williams: 0 for 0, 3 BB, HBP
Augusta: RHP Daryl Maday: 6.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 7 K--1 BK
Augusta: LHP Wilmin Rodriguez: 0.1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB
Augusta: RHP David Mixon: 0.2 IP, 2 K
Asheville: RHP Jhoulys Chacin: 6.0+ IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 9 K--3 HB, 2 WP
Williams reached base in all four trips to the plate. A .447 OBP so far in June has raised his season OBP above .250. Jordan was the other GreenJacket to reach base twice. Villalona had one of the GreenJackets' four hits, but he also had a hat trick, giving him a SO/AB ratio of 29%.
Maday had another very effective start, improving his ERA to 1.73. His walk rate has been up recently. After just 10 BB in April and May (including 3 BB in his one appearance for Connecticut), he has issued 11 BB in his four starts in June. After 19 appearances with San Jose to begin the season, Rodriguez made his first SAL appearance. Mixon, who had a 2.05 ERA in 17 appearances for Salem-Keizer last summer, made his 2008 season debut by striking out both batters he faced. The Rockies' Chacin, who had 3 ER in 6.2 IP eight days earlier against the GreenJackets, was much more effective against their lineup this time. Six scoreless innings brought his ERA back below 2.00.
ssA: Salem-Keizer defeated Yakima 6-5
Salem-Keizer: CF Caleb Curry: 2 for 3, 2B, 2 BB, SO, SB, E
Salem-Keizer: SS Brooks Lindsley: 2 for 3, BB, 2 SB
Salem-Keizer: RHP Mike Loree: 4.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 K--1 HR
Salem-Keizer: LHP Dan Runzler: 0.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER
Salem-Keizer: RHP Edwin Quirarte: 1.0 IP, 2 K--1 WP
Curry and Lindsley, a couple 2008 draftees, had the first and second multi-hit games of their respective pro careers.
Loree, who had a 1.13 ERA in nine appearances last summer in Arizona, made his 2008 season debut. After 20 appearances with nearly a 5.50 ERA for Augusta to begin this year, Runzler, the Giants' 9th rounder a year ago, made his first appearance this year for the Volcanoes. A year ago, he made one appearance for the Volcanoes after fifteen appearances in Arizona. Quirarte, the Giants' 5th rounder this year, was much better in his second pro appearance, striking out two of three batters he faced to earn his first save.
R: Scottsdale begins its season on Sunday
DSL: Giants defeated Royals 8-5
Dominican: DH Ramon Abad: 3 for 5, 2B
Dominican: RHP Edward Concepcion: 4.0 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
The 21-year-old Abad had three hits to improve his line to .269/.441/.346 through 26 AB. The 19-year-old Concepcion allowed a season-high 7 H but kept the damage to a couple runs as his ERA edged up a bit to 2.70.

Numbers dont always tell the whole story.
I got the chance to listen to the connecticut game and from what I heard that homerun that romo gave up was very controversial… even made Bien step out of the dugout.

I went to the Sacramento v. Fresno game again last night.
Velez turned a six pitch walk into an eight pitch walk. The home runs that Peirera gave up were monsters. Two of the most towering blasts I’ve ever seen at Raley field.
Schierholtz hit line drives in almost every contact at bat in the last two days, including the homerun to right, which probably would not have left AT&T but was hit so hard that it would have been fun to see bouncing around triples alley.
you can't block the Bocock

Speaking of line drives … I am not sure I ever have (although I probably have) seen a game with so many line drives caught by the infielders as well as the outfielders as happened at last night’s game.

the age of the lowest level players
Steve,
thank you for adding this very useful info
to save you typing, how about using a convention much like innings pitched where 90 and two thirds of an inning is often written as 90.2 for short
I was thinking of your comment recently about a prospect who just turned 17, you could tell us 17.1 for short or 17.11 to say that he is one month short of turning 18

I’ll give it some thought, although I am not sure that I always want to get that precise with the age. In the case the other day, it really struck me because not only was he 17, but he was barely 17. One of the other 17 years old I had cited a day or two earlier was getting close to his 18th birthday.

I think the cutoff should be July 1 for the age given for that year.

Promotions
It is refreshing to see some well deserved promotions – Otero to San Jose and TI to Fresno. Was EME also promoted? Time to remove some dead weight or career AAA players and bring up more prospects. Looks like TE and Otero had good performances in their debuts. When will MadBum be promoted?
