Prep for tonight's game
I was just trying to get ready for tonight's match up with the Royals, but they have nothing on their SB site yet either, so no trash talking until later I guess. As I was reading up on the Royals a couple of random thoughts
1.) Luke Hochevar is the opposing pitcher tonight. So far this year he is 0 for 3 with 3K and no walks. His batting line tonight? You know how the Giant's pitchers just love those AL pitchers that never hit. I say 1 for 2 with a BB.
2.) We've stunk it up in interleage play this year. Prior to this year we were 91-85 in interleague play. With the way the AL has owned the NL lately, I don't feel bad about that . We are 1-8 this year so far with 9 games left, dropping us to a a losing record of 92-93 overall. We play the Royals, Indians and As. Can we get that back up to .500 this year?
I have know working knowledge of the Royals except what I've gleaned in the past half an hour, I tend not to follow the AL because I actually like that pitcher's play the complete game. Overall the Royals seem to be playing pretty decent baseball. They have the same record as us but the feeling I get from browsing their posts is that they've played good baseball all year except for a 12 game losing streak. Without that streak they're above .500. This is opposed to how I feel about the Giant's where they've played pretty unremarkable baseball all year punctuated by a couple of good weeks.
I hope tonight is the start of Cain being better than he has been. 7 IP, 2 ER, 105 pitches and the win. Go Giants!

I really think that Hochevar is overrated. His stunt with the draft was annoying. But he’s a Boras client so what else is new?
I’m debating what to do about tonight’s game. I get home from work around 5:30 each night so I’ll miss the beginning. But if it really gets to be 102 degrees here like the weather person says, then I might just head over to a friend’s and hide in his swimming pool. Sorry Giants.

Quasi-related
I poked around a little at Royals Review, our sister (brother?) blog on SB Nation belonging to the Royals. One poster does Boyfriend of the Day featuring Royals players.
I happen to think this is a swell idea.

This would probably need to be done by one of the few female posters that we have around here.
What would you base it on if you did it? Performance the day before? The latest trends in facial hair and sock wearing among the players? Or some random BarronVonCurrentEvents patented formula?

We’ll need to specify criteria. Looks like the poster picked guys who performed well in a game as the BotD. Because it’s all about performance, as you know.
There are more posters with two X chromosomes than you’d think, here. Even more than I knew!

I’m not pluralizing anything, I’m assuming you mean tonight’s. The game belongs to tonight as in it is happening, thus the possesive apostrophe.

Considering that the Royals are the home team, I doubt Hochevar will get many at bats.

Even though he doesn’t record an AB, Luke Hochevar somehow goes 2-3 with a 2B, and 4 walks against Giants pitching.

We should start Barry Zito in all three of these games and let him go nine. That would injure his arm, wouldn’t it??

Do the Giants have insurance on Zito to weigh against his contract if he's injured?
If they have insurance to the hilt on his 126 million dollar debacle, I’d be in favor of them switching him to the ‘pen and taking horribly excessive risks involving pitch count & usage..

OT: Why do we hang on to Chulk?
is there some value I don’t see? Really everyone else in the bullpen seems to show at least flashes of goodness (Walker, Sadler) even if they are most of the time scary. Wilson’s great while still learning that last little bit, and Hinshaw’s flaws I’d definitely attribute to growing pains. Merkin when not injured looked great and Taschner has always been reasonably valuable. Yabu, great minus just a couple bad outings.
That leaves me with Chulk, the only giants reliever who, every time he comes in, I say “shit, game over”
rather than me thinking there’s still probably some decent pitching going on, or thinking “well this’ll probably be nerve-wracking”
someone agree with me, or tell me that I’m stupid and Chulk is more valuable than I think

although you do need a mopup man. I think Yabu was supposed to be the guy, but he pitched himself into a more important position, just as Chulk has pitched himself out. I think Chulk being released will be the move made when Merkin finally returns. I don’t think he has much trade value, although he certainly has better stuff than alot of relievers on other teams.

sweet
good to hear. I didn’t think about the fact that they’ll have to get someone off the roster when Merkin’s back. I’m so used to them shuffling guys like bowker/horwitz/denker/hinshaw all over the place that I didn’t realize they’d probably just cut chulk.
and actually, probably can’t spare an extra bullpen arm but from all I’ve seen about Nasty Nate tearing up the minors, why not cut Chulk now and bring him up? (because then there’d be even more of an obstacle for Lewis/Bowker to get starts)
With this team though, Chulk shouldn’t have lasted any time at all; he can’t play CF

Left-Handed Pissed Off
I have (read: had until yesterday) duckets to sit within three rows of the Giants dugout for all three games (including first row tonight), purchased as soon as they went on sale in Royals land. But the team I work for then released their 2008 schedule and, of course, decided they needed to have home games this very weekend. So I get to miss Cain’s no-hitter tonight. Yay.
Glass-half full, I gave them to one of my interns and get to be the nice guy boss. But I get to see the Giants never, more often than not. So screw the GHF outlook.

interleague records are overrated anyway. I’d much prefer that we do well within our division, and then our league after that. Oh, except I do hate losing to the A’s.
As for tonight, it appears that Hochevar has been throwing well lately. I expect we’ll need another sharp start from Cain to win, and maybe a big hit from Vizquel. (you heard it here first!)

It’s overrated but a nice guess about how we’ll do in the world series. I propose that if we go 3-16 or worse in interleague play this year we will get swept out of the series.
