Zito Trade

With Zito improving, is there a possible trade looming? The Yankees are struggling with pitching and if Zito continues to improve, it would not surprise me at all to see them make a move for Zito. Do you think this is possible? What would you want for Zito?

Personally, I would lvoe to trade Zito for prospects. I think freeing up our cap space for this offseason would be big for us, we already have plenty of pitching including prospects coming up, and we could use some young hitting prospects.

Not gonna happen

I don’t think anyone’s touching that contract, and Giants’ FO won’t admit defeat so soon.

Zito getting traded

Could happen, but the Gigantes would have to pony up at least 50% of the contract to get a team like the Yankees, Red Sox, or Mets to give us anything in return

still wouldn’t get anything in return. Two JR Phillips (sorry JR) and a Todd Linden, if the Mets/BoSox/Yanks were feeling generous.

by tyrannoman on Jun 3, 2008 9:16 AM PDT up reply actions

No one

Repeat, NO ONE, is trading for Zito without the Giants eating a massive % of the remaining contract. Even the Yankees won’t do that. Zito might not finish his career in SF but it’s unlikely he’s getting traded/unloaded until Year 5 at the earliest.

If anyone wants to take on a big enough chunk of his remaining salary, I’d give him away for free. But not even that’s gonna happen. Let’s just keep hoping he can reinvent himself as a passable No. 4/5 guy in the rotation.

I would trade zito for a big bat or any sized bat for that reason. if they could throw in a bad of balls too that would be great but I’m not too picky.

I believe that some teams would be willing to trade for Zito…but we would have to throw in Timmy and we get nothing in return.

As much as I wish he wasn't here,

he is. He’s not going anywhere, either. And he definitely wouldn’t net us any prospects because of his fat ass contract and his heaping pile of suck. He has like a 4-something era, which is okay, but not for a 100-whatever’s left on his contract-million dollars. He should have like a mid-3 or high-2 era with that kind of money. Even the Yankees wouldn’t waste their money on him. I think asking the Yanks for bats would be pushing it, too. I think a Bennigan’s coupon would be the best return we could hope for.

by BaronVonCurrentEvents on Jun 3, 2008 8:41 AM PDT up reply actions

But

Very good point, Baron. That said, Barry could waive his no-trade—and just might if it meant going to a strong team such as the Yankees. Then again, he might not want the pressure of The Big Apple.

Tonight’s start didn’t do much for Barry’s trade value though. I was more concerned about the 1/5 K/BB ratio than the runs he gave up. I felt Barry’s K/BB ratio in May - while not great - showed that he was going in the right direction. After tonight’s start, I no longer feel that way.

by sharksrog on Jun 4, 2008 12:28 AM PDT up reply actions

That maybe true, but there was zero strike zone for Zito last night. The 5th I felt he was squeezed beyond belief.

I voted for “other” because we would be lucky to be able to give him away for free. We aren’t getting prospects back for him while he’s pitching like this.

There is no salary cap in baseball, no one on the planet would eat Zito’s contract, and I can only hope that he will be an effective 4-5 starter. As last week, my new rallying cry for Zito is “Barry Zito…he’s not as bad as Pat Misch!”

by tyrannoman on Jun 3, 2008 9:02 AM PDT reply actions

No...

I know there is no salary cap in baseball, but, the team has a certain amount of money to spend, in other words, a cap.

Harmpton comparison

Hampton was traded with $110 million left on his contract (counting the $6M buyout for 2009, as listed at Cot’s). Colorado picked up less than half of that ( $49M ) and Florida took on another $23.5M when they shipped him on to Atlanta.

that CO also gave up Juan Pierre (who had a couple of decent years in Florida) and got in return Preston Wilson’s career year, two years of a not-entirely-over-the-hill Charles Johnson, and junk (Vic Darensbourg and Pablo Ozuna).

by can of corn on Jun 3, 2008 2:45 PM PDT reply actions

Not Happening

Why would Zito want to move? There are a number of possible reasons but I have come up with some and why he would choose to go against those reasons.

+Zito might want to move to a contender: Say hes pitching for the Mets, Yanks, or somebody contending. If we already boo and hate him in a place where we are in the “losing” mind-set, then I think far, far worse will happen in a winning mind-set. So No.
+Get closer to home: Well, for one thing, I am not real big on moving him to San Diego cause I dont like inter-division trade. Sweeney for Denker is ok though. Anyhow, hes also been in the bay area for quite a while. I dont think he would move.
+Chage of scenery: Zito has only “gotten her done” in the bay area. I dont think he is thinking he can win another Cy Young in another place. Will the 95 mph fastball appear out of thin air and bam…we have the former CY Winner Barry Zito!

Alas, no Zito trade. and considering that durability is his middle name, get used to him.
