Threets DFA'd
Henry Schulman writes in SFGate's Splash blog:
The Giants designated lefty Erick Threets for assignment, a move that would not have happened without Alex Hinshaw's emergence. I haven't talked to the brass about Threets today, but I know they have tried to trade him. If they can't, I'm guessing they hope he clears waivers and will go down to Fresno again.

He's as good as gone
that’s my guess
Todd Jennings: Next up on the Non-prospect Backup Catcher Train. Next Stop: The Pine at AT&T Park
Just one question... can he play first base?
Had to ask. I’m she threets to the wind.
DFA all Giants over 34 years old.
shitty
I predict he will go on to dominate with another club.
Billy Hayes: Nine more big-league plate appearances than you.
Does anyone know if Hinshaw’s knee injury is serious or not? If so, we could try and put him on the 15-day DL. Could buy us some more time. Also, it would put a little pressure on Jack Taschner to perform otherwise he could be replaced by Threets.
What was the major problem with Threets?
Just giving a quick peek at his #’s and it shows how he has had a rough time of it in AAA since they sent him back down, but his #’s aren’t horrible..then again maybe it was a choice btwn him and hennesy and BH got the loyalty nod..
Down in Front Meat!
Hennessey still had an option year
Threets does not, so leaving him in AAA isn’t an option (unless he clears waivers).
All-Father Watch: 1.32 ERA, 5 saves, 0.95 WHIP, 26 Ks in 27 1/3 IP
Horwitz
This guy reminds me of Brain Dalimore. Decent hitter with no real future. Keep swinging for singles maybe we are looking at the next John VanderWal PH maestro

Nope
Dallimore never batted less than .260 at any level where he played more than 60 games. He spent four years in AAA (3 in Fresno) and his lines were .294/.338/.408; .352/.417/.448 , .324/.381/.447, and .302/.369/.437. This of course convinced the Ginats to give him a whole 43 AB in 2004, when he posted .279/.347/.395. All of which led them to conclude that he wasn’t as great as Cody Ransom or Edgardo Alfonzo. Or Neifi Perez or Deivi Cruz.
I don’t have bad wishes for Threets, but his numbers in AA and AAA (except for this season, apparently) were not really that great. Maybe a change of system (to one that has coaching in the minors) might give him a fresh start, and if that’s the case good for him.

hmm...
I am confused about the stats you used to explain between the 2 players. Horwitz has better numbers by your 60 game criteria. If you look at Horwitz’s numbers in the minors he never hit lower than .286 with a minimum of 60 games or 260+ ABs.
Good luck Brian Horwitz the Giant’s new Felipe Crespo.

Looks like Threets will be on his way, which is a shame. He probably won’t pass through waivers & hopefully we can get something useful back in a trade.
What i’d do is call him up & send Denker down to Fresno. We don’t really have need for him with Durham & Burriss on the team so he’s not getting any at-bats & i’d rather him not just sit on the bench with the odd pinch hit at-bat. Even if it’s just a short term measure, it gives you more time to trade him & gives you the opportunity to raise his value.

Man, if my first choice is hoping that he clears waivers, my second choice is hoping the A’s pick him up.
I seriously can’t wait for all the “Threets was an A?” jokes.

I don't get that reference
Perhaps you could explain it to me?

Oh whoops. That was just a big mess of typos. I was trying to type “that’s what she said,” but my fingers kept slipping.

See, Threets really hates Jethro Tull, so it would have been hilarious if he became an A. The irony!
I get it!
That would have been delightful!

Whatever
I know Threets has good stuff, but he has a career BB/9 of almost 7. Plus, that figure has never really improved as he’s moved up the chain, and his K rate has completely collapsed. Somehow, I don’t think this will ever come back to haunt them.
I’m not sure how you can say his BB/9 hasn’t improved up the chain, when they’ve pretty much improved every year (whether it’s still too high is another debate). His BB/9 rates per (full) season in the minors are: 6.07 (the only season where he was a starter as opposed to reliever) 8.89, 7.61, 6.54, 6.29, 5.76, 5.17

I guess it was more of a comment of relativity. The numbers have improved, but that improvement has been from ugliness to only moderate awfulness. When combined with a K/9 that’s gone from a pre-injury stretch of 9.10, 13.66, 8.52, 12.71 to 7.38, 7.29, 6.59, 4.60, I’m not that fired up about him.
If the K rate had remained consistent, I would be more enthusiastic. Now, he’s just a guy who doesn’t throw strikes or miss (enough) bats. Maybe that gets better as he gets older and further away from injury, but I’m not optimistic. If we hold on to him, I’d love to be wrong, of course.

This is just so we can call Munter back up.
Here comes Herman with his bowling ball sinker.
Tentatively adopting Dan Ortmeier. And Boom Goes the Dynamite.
Hey! They actually signed Munter to a AAA contract, like… yesterday.
You may be right!

Munter needs to make a visit to the Home Depot. His sink’s been busted for a while.
