The Semi-Imminent Return of Dave Roberts

According to Rotoworld and Bruce Bochy, Dave Roberts hopes to be "game ready" by the 3rd week of July.

Frankly, in my opinion this is terrible news.  The thought of Dave Roberts taking even one at bat away from Fred Lewis, Brian Horwitz, Nate Schierholtz, or Young Player X (who I hear plays a mean CF) makes me want to scream at my computer monitor and verbally and physically assault random passerby.

So, the purpose of this fanpost is two-fold.  First, I'd like an answer to this question: Will we ever see Dave Roberts in a Giants' uniform again or will they just DFA him as soon as he's healthy and ready to play?  Second, complete the following sentence, "If I see Dave Roberts playing Left Field for the Giants in 2008 while Fred Lewis sits on the bench, I will _________."

Poll
When Dave Roberts returns from injury, he should:
  • Be San Francisco's regular LF and bat lead-off (wrong answer)
  • Play RF in place of a traded Randy Winn
  • Be used exclusively as a pinch-runner
  • Be DFA'd
  • Other (Explain in Comments)

Be traded

I'd like that too

The only reason I didn’t include it in the poll is I figured that since he was only returning probably a week before the deadline, it wouldn’t be enough time to showcase him to a contending team.

Correction

You should have said ”...showcase his considerable talents to a contending team.”

We all have to do what we can to help make this happen.

Either he’ll be traded (best case scenario) or he’ll be benched with the occasional spot start for match ups or to rest an OF. I doubt that he’ll steal any ABs away from Fred Lewis at this point, considering Freddie’s success thus far. They’ll probably keep him around since his veteran savvy will be useful in teaching the younger players the finer points of basestealing/running or whatever he’s good for.

yup

I agree with Natto that he’ll likely come off the bench, with the occasional spot start. After all, Top Gamer in CF is more than likely to be injured here and there as the season rolls along. Maybe we can get him through waivers to deal him in July. Pretty sure he’s under contract for 2009, which means he won’t be DFA’ed.

are you thinking

he starts when rowand sits? (when does that happen) i hope he never gets a start vs a rightie instead of freddie. will horwitz get sent back down?

1. Trade Winn
2. Call up Schierholtz
3. Go with an outfield of Lewis, Rowand, and Schierholtz; with Roberts as the 4th OF.

Tentatively adopting Dan Ortmeier. And Boom Goes the Dynamite.

by Andy from DC on Jun 19, 2008 4:28 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Obsolete...

sorry to say it, but I’ve given up on Ortmeier, which sucks because I like how gamertastic he is. I’d rather see Horwitz as OF 4 in that situation.

Solution: We can tell Dave Roberts that he is starting at a new outfield spot, a spot so new and so revolutionary, that you play defense all game. Then, take away one of the ball dudes and give the spot to Dave. His defense should fit in just fine there, so no one will be the wiser.

The new outfield spot should be at the bottom of McCovey Cove when Adam Dunn’s in town.

by rotorueter on Jun 19, 2008 4:33 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Does the position come with cement shoes?

If so, it’s a perfect fit for Roberts.

Wow, that was harsh.

To be honest...

...I actually wouldn’t mind Roberts taking Horwitz’s current role too much, at least for the rest of 2008. I think he’d be better than the Rabbi in pinch hitting situations.

I’d be even happier if they traded or cut Roberts, but I think both are unlikely. Nobody’s going to trade for him until they know if he’s recovered from surgery, and the Giants won’t cut him unless he utterly flails upon his return, which means bringing him back and giving him time to flail.

I could totally see..

Sabean trading Winn for a bucket of chicken, and complete salary relief, only to have Lewis shift to right, and Roberts get put in Left and hit in the #2 spot.

So anyone care to guestimate the odds the After Aug 1st Roberts in left, Rowand center & Winn right for 5 days a week?

I am not asking what makes the most baseball sense. Or what we like. But what Boulder Skull & Mr. “I am Not An Idiot” will do.

I think the odds are 75% likely barring injury.

I don't know the odds

But I think it very possible. Like I’ve said before, I am not expecting the semi-prospects to be playing at least half of the positions on a regular basis. I will believe it when I see it.

Whoops. I voted wrong in the poll. I thought it was asking what WOULD happen, not what SHOULD happen.

So that accounts for one of the three insane “startling and leading off” votes.

My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

by howtheyscored on Jun 19, 2008 10:56 PM PDT   0 recs

The best thing would be to trade him, but in order to do that you have to play him and show everyone that he’s healthy. Therefore I vote to DFA him as soon as he’s ready to play. Freddie Lewis wasted too many years in the minors and too many games on the bench while the Giants played their washed up vets. I don’t want to see him miss even a single atbat.

To bench Lewis now would be criminal. That said, it’ll most likely happen.

Except that there’s NO compelling argument for starting Roberts over Lewis. Lewis hits better, he fields at least as well if not better at this point, he’s just as fast on the basepaths, and he’s a decade younger.

When has the lack of a compelling reason to do something ever stopped the Giants from doing exactly that thing?

actually there IS a logical reason to play Roberts, and that is to show he’s healthy so you can trade him. Like I said, I hope they don’t go this route. They’re already showcasing Aurilia, Winn, Vizquel, Durham, and possibly even Molina. There comes a time when they actually have to make the transition to youth and stop wasting atbats to show other teams they should trade for these players on the downside of their careers. There’s always big talk at the deadline but little happens. Can you see the Giants being able to move everybody?? If any of these veterans are still here on August 1, that means every atbat they have had this year was a waste where they could have been looking at a young player.

Not because I think he should be, just because it said that’s the wrong answer, and dangit… You don’t tell me what to do!
