Major Love from KLaw
Adam J. Morris (Houston, Texas): Smoak, Chris Davis, or Max Ramirez? And does any other team have three pure hitting prospects as good as those three?
Keith Law: Smoak, Davis, Ramirez. The Rangers' system is stacked. Other orgs ... no, you may be right on that one. Giants could make a case if you want to project on Villalona and give them Posey and Gillaspie
From Keith Law's chat today on espn.com. Looks like our buds in orange and black are treding in the right direction on the farm. Law also reiterates in the chat that he ranks the Giants' farm system in the top 5 in the game. Nice little change, eh?

So that KLaw and the Fantastic Four comic might be true. Villalona, Posey, Gillasie…Quirarte? Did Law like him too?

If Adam could have followed up, he would have said, “Good points, Keith. People should go to Lone Star Ball and McCovey Chronicles to debate the merits of each system!”, but the chat format didn’t allow for it.

Yeah
The one for Lone Star Ball takes me to some Rangers blog instead of the blog about the annual dance where everyone dresses as a character from Spaceballs.

so is anyone besides Law saying good things about the system?
by slojoe on Jun 19, 2008 6:08 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I’m sure other people will say good things, but I don’t think we are a top-5 system like Law says. I haven’t seen anyone else praise us that highly.

At least someone is saying it. That’s much more than we could have expected in years past.

Law is a smart man with a lot on the ball. What’s the problem?

Honestly
Knowing how much the other pundits love to slam the Giants with their heads planted firmly up their own asses, I don’t see a dramatic turnaround from any of them anytime soon.

Which pundits have unfairly slammed us and our farm system?
by xanthan on Jun 20, 2008 5:53 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
To add, I always see people say that BP has a Giants bias, which is totally wrong. They’ve been critical of us but they’ve also praised us as well. Kevin Goldstein praised our draft picks and the direction our system was heading pretty solidly in BP’s Roundtable Draft Discussion.
I’m not seeing the bias.

+ 1
And I never give one of those.
If they had their heads planted firmly up their own asses, they would miss things like the Zito signing and the Bocockatastrophe of 08’. The people at BP disagree with a lot of the decisions the Giants make, but that doesn’t mean they’re biased. It just means that they disagree with a lot of the decisions the Giants make. When they don’t, they have no problem saying it:
“The Giants pop Brandon Crawford here in the fourth, and I think it’s a fabulous selection. Crawford is incredibly raw for someone his age, but he has some really nice tools. After going for sure bets in Buster Posey and Conor Gillaspie, Crawford is the perfect type of complement. Throw in Roger Kieschnick, who was once considered a first round right fielder, and it’s possible - not likely, but possible - the Giants just filled half their future.”
Kevin Goldstein admitted the he “really like[s] the Giants draft”.
..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.

Ya there’s KG too, and I was wondering why he hadn’t come up yet.

BP generally levels criticism fairly. The only writer there that I would accuse of having an irrational anti-SF bias is Joe Sheehan.

Yeah, I don’t always agree with Sheehan but he’s, what, one writer out of 15? 20?

There was one article out not too long ago about this year’s draft winners, and the source didn’t even mention the Giants, despite what we’ve been hearing. I wouldn’t count that as a slam per se, but not mentioning the Giants at all for drafting well was a pretty dumb move.
Then there’s Rotoworld and their continous misinformation about the Giants players. The description of Hinshaw’s stuff, for example. I count blatant misinformation like that as disrespect, because the person writing it didn’t even try to find the correct answer and just wrote whatever shit he felt like. At the very least he could have just opted not to mention anything about the lefty’s repertoire at all. At least he wouldn’t be incorrect.

Here’s my thing about that. BP is a collective of many different writers, different people, and they’ll disagree sometimes on different things. KG might have loved the draft but the other guy might not have and if he listed his reasons intelligently and logically, that’s fine and good. But I doubt anyone is “lul giants sux”. I think people sometimes think BP is one person or one entity, and it’s not, it’s several different people with different attitudes, opinions, beliefs, etc.
As for Rotoworld, it’s a snarky fantasy baseball sight that’s not even in the same realm of BP, BA, THT, BBTF (hello acronym hell). I could care less when they miss a fact or make a statement because it’s freaking Rotoworld not Bill James.

I posted one of those threads of Law praising the Giants and my whole point was that yes it’s only one guy and we should take one guy’s opinion to mean all that much. But given where the farm system was just a couple of years ago I think the fact that we’ve gotten to a point where ANYBODY worth a damn could even suggest we were in the top 5 is something worth getting excited about.

Well
based on promotions and injuries and other things, I see no reason why the Giants can’t contend for a top 5 spot. I figure Oakland, Boston, Tampa Bay, Texas, SF, Baltimore, and the Yankees will be fighting for the top 5 just based on promotions to the ML’s, prospect dropoff, and injuries etc. Also projection is taken into account, as always.
