OT: All Time Worst Contract Team
How about a little "off day" distraction ? On Bugs and Cranks yesterday one of the contributers posted the All Time Worst Contract Team. I'm sure you can imagine the current Giant listed on that team.
Comment starter: Do you agree with the writers list ? Can you create an All San Francisco Giants Worst Contract Team ? The team need not be based on dollar value. Player performance does factor. Trades may be included. Difficulty: You may not include Barry Zito.

I have a hard time believing that Gagne’s one-year deal with the Brewers is the all-time worst contract for a closer. Mark Davis anyone?

Armando Benitez.
That is all.
"he walked 18; new league record! Struck out 18, another new league record! He also hit the sportswriter, the PA announcer, the bull mascot twice..."
Matthews Jr. and Juan Pierre
It’s funny that Sabean was into trying to get both of these guys during that off-season. And then ended up with a pretty bad contract for the center fielder he did get.
Only 900 games until the end of Zito's contract
Flip....Flip....Flip
That’s me flipping a coin on the Roberts/Pierre/Matthews Jr. deals.
The Giants didn’t get away clean by any means, but less damage with Roberts. We just wasted a little bit of money. The Dodgers and Angels. Ouch ! Dave Roberts is not playing due to injury (surprise !). Pierre is not playing due to the massive suck muscle.

As to bad Giants contracts, in addition to Benitez, I’d mention Edgardo, Matheny (although mostly because of the injury), Neifi, Osvaldo Fernandez, Benard, Shinjo.
2008 Giants: Scrappy! Scrappy! Joy! Joy!
I don’t think the Giants’ spent much $$ on Shinjo. I know they traded Estes, but I thought he was making less than a mil.
Making us watch Shinjo and his funky swing makes it a bad contract whether the team paid him or not.

Definitely Alfonzo
4 years / $26M for what turned out to be the last four years of his career. It’s easy to forget just how bad it was because the Angels took the worst year of it in the trade ($8M for a guy who went 5-for-50 and was released after 18 games).

His bat, batting gloves and whatever it is he's wearing underneath his jersey are pretty spiffy too.
Only 900 games until the end of Zito's contract
You think those are spiffy?
You should see his briefs.
