Open Yabu Confusion Post
Yabu baffles me.
When I watch him pitch, with all that movement and craftiness, I think "Damn, he's good!"
When I look at his shiny ERA, I think that my impression is confirmed. Then I look at his strikout rate and walk rate and FIP, and I think how the hell does he have that ERA? You can't forge an ERA out of sheer craftiness, can you?
Then I look at his GB%, and see that it's a pretty solid 50.9%. That kinda explains the shiny ERA, right? Except that his LD% is an unexceptional 22.3%. That trick doesn't usually work!
So, what do you think? Are you buying this guy? I guess I'm kinda leaning towards "not really" in the he's really about as good as Jack Taschner sort of way. I don't think we're in for another Henneplosion or Chulkification, but let's keep our expectations set for decent if not spectacular.
Possible Hijack for those who dislike talking about 39 year old middle relievers: I really do believe in Brian Wilson despite his palpitationy closes.

You're right about the shaky peripherals
He’s probably due for some regression, his BABIP is .231 and his xBABIP is .343
His BB% is high, too. It’s currently at 10.9%, league average is 8%.
Still, he’s done pretty well and if he regress to his FIP of 3.69 he’d still be valuable.

No
But that’s the wonderful thing about relief pitching. Sometimes guys end up having season way above their norms, but other than the ERA, usually you can see that it was just because of luck since their peripherals stay about the same.

It doesn’t hurt when you get 3 innings pitched on 15is pitches… No doubt he’s lucky, but he’s our lucky and damn it, I want someone to trade us something good for him!

I dunno…he could be, but I’m imagining that the picture was taken in spring training, so who knows who it could be. It might be Anvil (youngest & oldest type of picture)....

Novice Japanese-helpu!
I can’t tell what the fan says and that bothers me.
It’s written in katakana. I know the first character is sa, and the last one is do. I’m assuming we read this left to right because the long do sound is on the end. If we were reading it right to left the long do sound would be switched around with the marking for the long sound going the other way.
I can’t for the life of me figure out what that middle character is. I looked up a few words with possible kana that fit that stroke-type thing:
sakudo-machinations
sakedo-sake drinking place
saido-redemption (a Buddhist term)
sanodo-dictionary told me it’s slang for SOB.
Don’t know why someone would put “machinations” or “SOB” on a fan. Sakedo maybe, if they were fans to decorate a restaurant or bar or something. Saido is probably the closest of these shots in the dark because of the Buddhist thing.
Anyone else want to take a crack at this?

The middle character sort of looks like ン, making it “sandee”. So, maybe it just says “Sunday”?
by Natto on Jun 19, 2008 11:58 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I like to think it says “Sundae” and that it came as a throw in for purchasing ice cream on a hot Kansai summer day.
Still in despair.

Crap I messed up the last kana there.
If it was Sunday wouldn’t they just use the kanji for it? It’s fewer strokes and everything.

I’d try the sweet potato flavor, as well as the bay leaf. The others….no.

Not as much as it scares Natto. I hear the extraction process is pretty painful for him.
