Zito vs. Andres Galarraga. Hmm....nope, gotta bet on the Big Cat just because he'll hit four homers off of Zito from the ninth spot.

Wait, this is Armando Galarraga? An actual pitcher? Oh, then we're absolutely screwed.

Villalona’s not a fat load. He’s just pleasantly plump. Or large and in charge.

He needs to lay off the good Southern cookin’ down in Augusta.

Are you saying Galaragga was a fat load? Now hold it justy a minute. On his last stint with the Giants he was forty-frickin’-two. I always thought Galaragga was a pretty remarkable athlete, especially for such a big dude.

I heart the Big Cat and always will.

I'm ambivalent about Zito starts

but, the more he sucks, the more it makes Sabean look like a retard (as if he needs the help) and the more that happens, the likelihood of him getting fired increases, which means the Giants will have a good GM who will accelerate the return to glory sooner than Sabean will.

So as you can see, Zito sucking and getting bombed is actually in the best interests of the Giants…

by Azmanz on Jun 18, 2008 1:24 PM PDT reply actions

The worst thing about the Zito signing...

~ It’s not the millions and millions of $$ flushed down the toilet.
~ It’s not the seven years of repeated automatic losses every time he pitches.

It’s that his contract is going to make it nigh on impossible for the Giants to sign Lincecum, Cain and Sanchez to long-term contracts. They will ask for (and richly deserve) more money than Zito is getting and the Giants won’t be able to pay it.

That's all I can stands, I can't stands no more!

Not really

Even assuming that salaries in general don’t go up over the next few years, the Giants have shown a definite willingness to backload contracts. By the time we’re signing Cain or Lincecum or Sanchez long term, it’ll be several years from now since they’ll be past their arbitration years and we can just defer the money to later.

And let’s not assume that they’ll all work out, by the way. They are exciting and fun to watch and everything, but assuming that any three young pitchers will be dominant five years from now is a bit premature.

If he was a #4 starter it wouldn’t the be WORST all time. I honestly expected more than this.

You’d pay $126M for a #4 starter.

If Zito doesn’t pitch again (I know, best possible solution but not likely) we’re paying him $90 million to go away.

If we left Zito out there to twist in the wind every time he has a bad outing, maybe he’d quit in shame and that would be that.

And you may find yourself
watching a Barry Zito start
And you may find yourself
in another part of the park
And you may ask yourself:
“How did I get here?”
And you may say to yourself
“This is not my beautiful ace!”
And you may ask yourself
“MY GOD! WHAT HAVE I DONE!”

I’m surprised Zito isn’t doing better. After all, he’s in the final six of years of his contract and should be looking for a big payday.

Zito factoid

Barry Zito is only in the second year of a seven year contract. It could become an eight year contract if Zito pitches certain amount of innings between 2011-2013.
At the end of this the second season of the contract Zito be still be owed $101.5M. YES $101.5M.

Additional perspective

Mike Hampton’s contract still hasn’t run out.

Our best chance for avoiding disaster with the Zito contract:

Barry Zito becomes a Buddhist monk and renounces material things.
