Giants may hire Peterson as a special instructor

Rotoworld's take: The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Giants may bring in recently fired Mets pitching coach Rick Peterson to work with Barry Zito.
Not only was Peterson the pitching coach in Oakland when Zito was at his best, he worked with Zito as far back as high school. According to the newspaper, Peterson could be hired as a special instructor, working under pitching coach Dave Righetti. This would be pretty awesome in my book...

Good start today
I read the following things:
Braves interested in Winn
Giants interested in hiring Peterson
If they follow through in trading Winn, I’m going to have to say this team is actually making smart steps this season overall (playing kids, great draft, now these things)

I like this idea, and more so that Peterson would answer to Righetti. This gives Rags a bit of supervisor level experience over non playing personnel. I don’t know if Rags has managerial aspirations, but this would give him more to put on his resume.

Why the f#!k not? It’s not like it could get any worse with Zito.

At this point, Barry is:
A) throwing a mid-80’s fastball
B) among the worst control-pitchers in MLB
C) without any sort of unique, or ‘trick’ pitch
How does adding Rick Peterson address any of the above?

How about
Adjusting his control pitches?
Figuring out why the fastball has declined?
add a trick pitch?
Imagine if they could add a knuckleball to Zito’s repitoire…he could become our lefty Wakefield…but with a changeup!

Zito’s not taking any of my essence.
He should learn the Soul Punisher. It’s more his personality.

O.T. but you mentioned knuckle ball..i
I saw bit of the M’s game last night with their knuckleballer on the mound. Clemant was behind the dish. The kid did not look bad for guy that has had a knock as a cather with shaky “d”. I was impressed. I wants.

Biff,
I agree that there’s no guaruntee Peterson will help Zito, but could he possibly hurt? Thowing a couple hundred thousand in an effort to salvage a $126 million investment seems reasonable.

I think you’re forgetting about the magic of firendship.
Also, Peterson has the other ring necessary for the wondertwin transformation that can allow Barry Zito to take the form of “Good Pitcher.”

Good points
As I myself feel Zito is kind of hopeless at this point. However Peterson knows him pretty well, and we all know Zito seems to struggle from lapses in confidence. Maybe Peterson could help him through whatever mental blocks he seems to have out there on the mound.

not really - what do they have to pay Peterson for "consulting", maybe $100,000??
on a $126 mil investment gone sour, thats money well spent….
$100,000 on prospects doesnt get you much

As already said, 100k to make 126 million potentially work better is a good deal. Even if it was just 2 mph on the fastball and some better control.
better question is, why not? Get this Rick, son of Peter, in here.

So is his son’s name “Petersonson”?

His son’s name would be Rickson.
Or I guess… Rickpetersonson.

FWIW
I know Barry sucks, and that he was likely as not to have a shitty start today, but I couldn’t help but think before the game today that the only thing that could have been running through his head was this:
“Gee, I must really suck if they’re thinking of bringing Uncle Ricky into the picture, even though we already have a pitching coach here. Oh shit, now I gotta go pitch. Waaaa!”

Zito
It’s really to the point where the guy shouldn’t be pitching in the majors.
- His WHIP is 1.93; worst in the majors.
- His ERA is 6.32; worst in NL (worst in majors is Boof Bonser—6.45, if that makes anyone feel better)
- His strikeouts-to-walks ratio is 0.83; worst in the majors (for qualifying pitchers).
The Giants pitchers whom Zito’s stats most resemble right now are those of Brad Hennessey and Patrick Misch. Those guys aren’t pitching in San Francisco right now, and neither should Zito be.
So if Rick Peterson holds some magic key that can somehow transport Zito back to the first four years of his career:
- WHIP: 1.18
- ERA: 3.12
- K/BB ratio: 2.10
...and it would cost the Giants all of $100K, I say go for it. It’s not my money, and it can only help. And really, the Giants have so much sunk into Zito already, that doing whatever they can do to try to get him back to at least being a competent, somewhat effective, major league pitcher only makes sense.
$100K isn’t that much to throw after $126 mil, much of which is on the verge of being entirely wasted. I mean Zito’s so bad right now, you wonder how long they’re going to keep sending him out there. And I’m sorry, but even his “good” starts lately have been barely effective.
I don’t have a lot of faith that Peterson can get Zito back to, let’s say even a 2006 level of quality. I think most of us would be happy if he could help him get to sucking the way he did last year.
Bottom line: this is a disaster. It shows absolutely zero signs of getting any better. Only worse. So, yeah…Rick Peterson? Bring him on!
That's all I can stands, I can't stands no more!

I think the a couple years ago he would have.
But Hiel Selig’s crack down on player entourages( jelious of Bonds much?) would probably prevent the necessary access now days.

That’s a good point. I wonder if the Giants’ would have to make him a coach, or if they could just let him be a special instructor or whatever and that would give him access to the clubhouse.
