Depodesta on prospects

The money quotes?

"My only answer is that in a perfect world (which rarely, if ever, occurs), I prefer bringing guys up when you have the reasonable hope that they'll never go back down to the minors. That is strictly my opinion, not anyone else's. This was the case with guys like Khalil and Jake. All too often, though, you see guys come up, struggle, then go back down. That roundtrip ticket can do a lot of damage to a player's confidence, and that confidence is a key ingredient to success at the highest levels. Along those lines, think about what it did for Kouz last year when Buddy stuck with him and kept putting him out there. We all expected Kouz would hit, but I'm confident that the decision to keep him in the big leagues throughout his struggles was an element in his eventual success, even if just a sliver.

There are examples at nearly every level. During spring training of 2003, Nick Swisher was having a monster camp. After being drafted in 2002 he had finished the season in High-A ball, and the plan all winter was to start him back there. Due to his great spring, some people starting pushing for Nick to go to AA even though he didn't even have a year's worth of minor league at-bats yet (I'm sure I was one of them). I specifically remember Keith Lieppman, the Farm Director of the A's, saying, "If he goes to AA and struggles to the point where we have to send him back to A ball, I won't even know where to begin to pick up the pieces." Nick Swisher was not a guy who lacked for confidence, by the way. So, Nick started back in A ball, killed it, moved to AA, and so on."

How sad am I? I am beinging to dread the day the M’s, or someone else, hires him for a GM and his blog has to close up shop.

Contrast this idea with the Mariners approach for prospects:

Struggling > Promote to the next level
Still struggling at a higher level > Promote again
Mashing > Let stagnate

as opposed to the Giants:

Struggling > promote to Majors
Still struggling > keep in Majors
Mashing > [ division by zero ]

I know, right? Aren’t bloggers a bunch of unwashed mouthbreathing jerks?

i see your point - but i didnt really consider McC a blog, more of a fan forum or BB

its either very sad or hilarious, depending on your point of view, that a former GM is blogging….

I don't see it as either

People from all walks of life have blogs, not just basement dwelling nerds like us.

eh, you guys might be right.... i just thought it was funny and sad at the same time

i see his blog and it looks like the template is 10 years old or something and its called “itmightbedangerous” and im just thinking, what in the hell is this guy doing?? .....i dont think its appropriate for a former GM , now assistant GM to blog and correspond with the public on
baseball matters – he’s still getting paid decent money for his opinions, shouldnt be giving them
away for free….and if he’s out of baseball and some point and continues to blog, its sad in a GlennDickey.com kind of way…..

Reading this makes you really feel for Sanchez. Not only was he jerked back and forth between the majors and minors, but he was also jerked back and forth between starting and relieving.

I wonder if he had Devo on his Ipod during this time.

Haha how funny that he doesn’t believe in overdrafting. How coincidental when you consider that on both the A’s and Padres they’ve horribly overdrafted some really terrible prospects just because their stats made them sound good in college.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 18, 2008 11:45 AM PDT reply actions

I don't know about the Pads

but look at what the A’s were paying the players they overdrafted. They overdrafted guys, not based on shiny college stats. They overdrafted guys because they were cheapskates. They overdrafted guys for the same reason Brian Sabean overdrafted Jackson Williams.
