Ugh

I’m going to throw up on your shoes. If AS had the chance to sit behind Favvvrrreee for 3 years, he’d be better than Rodgers.

by bondslegend on Jun 16, 2008 8:33 PM PDT up reply actions

well

Rodgers was way better than AS in college. I don’t care if he played under Tedford. He was easily the best QB Tedford ever coached either. Harrington? Akili Smith? Dilfer? Hahahahaha.

But yes I agree he should be better seeing as he sat under Favre. QB’s need to sit. Unless they’re some freaks like Marino or Manning, there really is no reason to rush them onto the field. Especially if they have nobody to learn from.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 16, 2008 8:35 PM PDT up reply actions

What do you mean????

Alex had Tim Rattay and Ken Dorsey coaching him up his rookie year!!! How could he possibly fail??!!!

by bondslegend on Jun 16, 2008 8:36 PM PDT up reply actions

HAHAHA

Exactly. Nolan failed Smith from Day 1.

First he selects Smith #1 overall. Like 2 rounds too early.

Second, he doesn’t acquire a legit veteran QB.

Third, he rushes Smith into the the lineup against the Indianapolis Colts, a perennial playoff team.

Fourth, he TRADES away Smith’s only competition in Rattay before the trade deadline.

Fifth, he fails to provide Smith with any good QB coaches (JIM HOSTLER WAS A CB IN DIVISION 4 COLLEGE!)

Sixth, he doesn’t get any good OC’s until year 4.

And Seventh, all of Nolan’s offensive acquisitions at WR’s are failures. So no real weapons other than Davis and Gore, and he and his staff can’t even figure out how to get Davis the ball consistently.

All of this = FAILURE.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 16, 2008 8:42 PM PDT up reply actions

IDK if it was 2 rounds early,

from what I heard, Smith was widely considered the best QB in the draft. Though that has to be taken with a grain of salt, since Gore was considered “overrated” in that same draft.

Anyways, yes, Nolan sucks. We would have been better off drafting Braylon Edwards, having Rattay QB in 05, then signing Brees in 06. But hindsight is 20/20. I think Smith will be a pretty decent QB for the next few years.

by bondslegend on Jun 16, 2008 8:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Well

I didn’t have him rated that high. I had Rodgers as a #1 pick. So did other people during the college season. He was shredding really good defenses in college, while playing in a pro system and showing above average athleticism, great arm strength, and good accuracy. He also showed poise and confidence and leadership that I never saw of Alex at Utah.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 16, 2008 8:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Poise and confidence and leadership

those are what I call “bullshit stats”, or “BS” for short. You may have a point with the other stuff, but c’mon with that BS.

Alex won a BCS bowl game at a tiny little college in a tiny little conference. His college team used a wide-open offensive style with multiple WRs running quick routes. Sound like something that our new OC might have some familiarity with?

by bondslegend on Jun 16, 2008 8:59 PM PDT up reply actions

They're not the same

Poise, Confidence and Leadership aren’t BS stats, they’re traits that are important for sports.

As for Meyer’s scheme, its quite different from what Martz runs in the NFL. I don’t see Martz using 10-12 shovel passes a game. And tons of little screens in the slot and whatnot. He attacks downfield.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 16, 2008 9:10 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree they're important,

But I don’t think you can tell that somebody is or isn’t a good leader when you see them for 3 hours once a week. Just because Alex doesn’t scream and yell on the field doesn’t mean he’s a bad leader. He showed pretty awesome poise and confidence when he led the GW drive against AZ in the season opener last season.

And Martz constantly adjusts his scheme so that he fits the personnel he has. I bet you see the niners in many more 3 and 4 WR sets with Davis lining up in the slot often. Shotgun formations and rollouts will probably be pretty common.

by bondslegend on Jun 16, 2008 9:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Unfortunately, Mr. Play until Age 54ve wouldn’t fricking retire, and every time he was out Rodgers had a freak injury. Damn it

by North Side Chicago Expatriate Giants Fan on Jun 16, 2008 8:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Dude,

stop with Aaron Rodgers. The guy is pretty good, but is also made of glass. He would have fared exactly the same as Smith if their roles were reversed. You really think he’d be as good as he is if he came to this team the way it was in 05? Please.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 16, 2008 8:56 PM PDT up reply actions

OK

We had hobbes defending Sabean, I’m the AS defender around here.

He has had absolutely ZERO chance to succeed since he was drafted. A shit team as a rookie, where he was just thrown out there behind a terrible line with his coach refusing to play the CLEARLY better RB (gore), he’s had a different OC every year, his coach is a fucking douchebag who knows nothing about offense, etc etc etc.

Look at his first 3 games last year (before the injury). Even with that moron as his OC, he actually did a very good job. His only INT was because his moron WR (Jacobs) ran the wrong route. He’s going to better this season, mark my words. Martz is very VERY good with young QBs.

by bondslegend on Jun 16, 2008 8:32 PM PDT up reply actions

I’ll pitch in and say that AS did a pretty decent job with Norv as his OC. The multiple changes certainly didn’t help his development, and it’s not like he’s had good targets.

I’m gonna have guarded optimism about Martz’ influence, and hope it helps AS improve to his potential.

It's my blarg! Quick Pitch

by can of corn on Jun 16, 2008 8:34 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm almost positive it will

Remember, the dude’s still only like 24/25. That’s still realllyy young for a QB.

Though its sink or swim this year, he HAS to show improvement.

by bondslegend on Jun 16, 2008 8:39 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree

That Smith has been failed since Day 1. But I still don’t think he would have been able to justify his draft spot had he been given a fair shake.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 16, 2008 8:43 PM PDT up reply actions

It's almost impossible

to justify a number 1 overall selection at QB. VERY few have. It’s not his fault nobody wanted to trade for the pick and that he was chosen there. He’s just a player.

by bondslegend on Jun 16, 2008 8:47 PM PDT up reply actions

I could justify having chosen a different QB at #1 that year…

by North Side Chicago Expatriate Giants Fan on Jun 16, 2008 8:49 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm done w/ this

if you’re going to keep on with that ridiculous position. Nolan clearly has no idea how to handle a young QB, and would have done the exact same thing to Rodgers if he’d been drafted.

by bondslegend on Jun 16, 2008 8:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Some QBs could transcend Nolan… like Rodgers!

by North Side Chicago Expatriate Giants Fan on Jun 16, 2008 8:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes

you’re right. i don’t know how it took me so long to see it. TRADE P WILLIE FOR RODGERS NOWW!!!!!!111111

by bondslegend on Jun 16, 2008 8:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah,

I cannot believe they didn’t fire him after the way he handled last year. The AS situation alone deserved his ass getting canned.

That said, I’m hoping Martz will not let this offense be the bucket of fail it was last season. I think there’s some reason for a small amount of optimism, but I feel the same about them as I do the giants- not getting my hopes up.

by bondslegend on Jun 16, 2008 8:29 PM PDT up reply actions

It's funny

I’m ridiculously negative on the 49ers, but optimistic when it comes to the Giants.

Shamless plug, check out www.ninercaphell.com : )

by Hobbes2d on Jun 16, 2008 8:31 PM PDT up reply actions

IDK

Martz pretty much never fails with young QBs. He even made the Lions a pretty good offense…and they didn’t have Gore or the D the niners have.

by bondslegend on Jun 16, 2008 8:34 PM PDT up reply actions

And yes

Nolan should have been canned. There’s 100 reasons (probably more) as for why that SHOULD have occurred. But with the way that team’s been run the past 6 years, I can’t say I’m surprised that he’s still around.

I’m cautiously optimistic Martz can fix the offense. They should be better offensively, but I don’t know if he can fix Smith. I’m banking on Shaun Hill, since he actually knows that your supposed to get rid of the ball quickly, and he knows how to avoid pass rushers. Smith just stands there waiting to get sacked like David Carr.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 16, 2008 8:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Agree'd

After Smith’s injury, I was saying that Hill should have been the guy.

That said, I think Smith’s better than Hill, and I think he’ll have a chance to show it this year. He’s a good fit for Martz’ system, and Martz will know that Vernon Davis is actually an offensive threat and should be used as such.

by bondslegend on Jun 16, 2008 8:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Well

Idk that Smith is a good fit. He’s not really that accurate (even before the injury). Martz primarily has had success with pocket passers and guys with quick releases. That’s why I think Hill is better suited, and Hill has the mobility to get away from the rush. Smith has athletic mobility, he just never really uses it.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 16, 2008 8:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes,

he doesn’t use his athleticism nearly enough. IDK if that’s a coaching thing or a lack of instincts thing. We’ll have to see I guess.

Which is why I found it funny the revisionist history fans would have when they’d complain about Benitez and other closers after Nen. Since Nen always had his adventures in closing out games too.
