Vladimir Frias sounds like a stud

I really like him. He won a ton of awards at Tennessee Wesleyan and hit over .400 the last two years.

The format looks like it’s been copied/pasted from Baseball America. Checked their database and they have Quirarte as signed. Don’t know where the 193 K figure is coming from though.

193k seems like a lot for a 5th rounder

Especially since that 5th rounder isn’t a HS player being wooed from college. If this is the signing bonus precedent we’re setting, Posey might be wise to ask for 10 million

Go Durham, Roberts, Aurilia, Vizquel, Winn, Lowry! The better you do, the quicker we can trade you!

by NeifiChicken on Jun 15, 2008 11:58 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Seriously?

Are you just throwing this out there, or do you have some insight as to why 193k for a 5th rounder would be high?

A friend of mine got signed in the 5th for 150k 2 years ago, and he was a junior in college. This doesn’t seem too out of the ordinary to me… but please shed some light if you know otherwise.

by Fresburg on Jun 16, 2008 8:22 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Seems to be slightly above, not a lot above

Last year, early 5th rounders got about $150K and the 147th pick last year was slotted with $162,000. According to the reports, the slots were raised this season about 7% for the 2nd to 5th rounds, which would put the 147th pick slot bonus to $173K approximately, but since the first round was slotted with a 10% raise, I could see an agent wanting $178K.

Either way, $193K is roughly 10% over slot, which is approximately what the Giants paid over slot to Bumgarner and Lincecum previously. I don’t see how this sets a precedence for signing Posey for four times the slot of about $2.5M for the 5th pick (or 300% over slot). However, they did pay basically slot to all the other early draft picks in 2007, so this overslot is not in line with what they did last season.

My guess would be that they realized that fighting over slot or slightly above slot is not worth the lost time of evaluation and acclimation and education that occurs when the player signs early and starts playing in short-season Salem-Keizer or rookie league.

In addition, I think that signings are quicker this season because the slot was increased plus they now have one draft under their belt regarding the new August 15 deadline, there was a lot of stalling last season probably because of the new system. Plus, I’ll bet a lot of players realized that they lost all that time fighting over not a lot of money. For example, Fairley fought to the end and got $10K over slot. If that delays his getting to the majors by one week, there goes his $10K extra, plus more for every week after that.

About Posey, Weiters did get $6M when the slot was $2.25M for the #5 pick and Price got $5.6M last year as the #1 pick ($3.6M slot). Porcello got $3.58M, which is almost what the #2 pick got, Moustakas got $4M (and was slotted for $3.15M).

So I think that $4-5M is about what a top pick could expect to get in the draft without Boras as your agent, and if I were Posey’s agent I think that arguing for $5-6M would be where I would start and be happy with $3-4M and a major league contract when the deal is done. And Sabean said in a post-draft interview that the Giants would be open to a major league contract, which would fast track Posey.

I think the $12M was a red herring they threw out to get Tampa Bay not to draft Posey, and probably Pittsburgh too. Plus most knew that Alvarez would be the Pirates pick if available and most knew that it was down to T.Beckam and Posey for TB, so the dominos would fall T.Beckham and Alvarez with the $12M request, then probably Hosmer to KC as per all the rumors, and the Orioles would be unlikely to draft Posey because of Weiters, leaving the Giants or at worse the Marlins to select Posey, both teams needing catchers desperately, but SF willing and able to pay for a top pick.

I doubt the Giants tipped off their hand in terms of selecting Posey, but I can see Posey’s agent letting the Giants know what they were looking for if the Giants selected him, in order to influence them to draft him with their pick.

Out of the top teams picking, if I were Posey, I would want the Giants or Marlins to select me. They both need a future catcher and fast, as both teams are nearly rebuilt and nearly ready to compete, meaning that Posey could rise quickly. Orioles has Wieters in the way and the Royals and Pirates have a history of incompetence in the way and no track record that things will necesarily get better, though the Royals are nicely stacked right now. The Rays are improving, have a great set of young players, but again, no track record of success.

As much as people here like to ride on Sabean, he does have a history of success behind him, as do the Marlins. In addition, Sabean values defense and versatility, which Posey have in spades, and therefore might pay more for Posey than another team. Also, Posey, not expected to be a huge HR hitter, would not be affected much by playing at AT&T, so he’s not scared away by our park’s image as a pitcher’s park (which has not held up in recent years but the media still hasn’t learned yet so others probably haven’t either) that kills HR power.

Great points. If Posey starts out demanding $12M and settles for $7M, the Giants will think they stole him. :-)

KC has signed basically 2/3’s of their draft class and other teams like the Angels aren’t slow-footing it either. It looks like the money is going to be flowing much more this year than in previous years, now that all the clubs have a year under the new system. That could be a very good thing, given that in puts the onus on tightwad owners to put more money into player development if other teams in similar situations become big spenders in this area.

Besides our top talent, I really want to get King and Barnes inked. I’m surprised Ziegler hasn’t signed yet, he’s a senior.

I believe Buster and Conor will sign so I am most interested in the following players: O’Sullivan, Jarvis and Thompson.

Thompson, I don’t think will sign, unless we pay him a ton of money.

Dare I say it

That this team may finally be willing to “overpay” for more than one or two prospects outside the first ten rounds to build a “real” farm system? I don’t think they took so many fliers at the end of the draft if there weren’t some indications that a few of these guys could be nudged to sign.

Seems like they’re taking a more aggressive approach with the minors altogether with the scouting in Latin America, the last three drafts, and now signing these dudes. There was a quote from some big wheel in the scouting department, maybe it was Bobby Evans, saying that they remained optimistic about getting Carter Bell. Guy signed a letter of intent to Oregon State; it’ll take an offer he can’t refuse to get him. I think the team will make such an offer.

I’m sure with all the money coming off the books for the major league payroll, it’s really opened the door for signing both draftees and 16 year old FAs. . It’s kinda fun watching a team reinvent themselves this way.

by tyrannoman on Jun 17, 2008 8:28 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m a little worried about Conor Gillaspie signing. He was so angry about sliding out of the first round that he wouldn’t talk to the press on draft day. I suspect he’s got a chip on his shoulder—he wants to show everyone that he’s as good as the players from the major programs. Which is fine. I just hope he signs.

I could see Posey sitting out until the Aug. 15 deadline, but who knows?

by Dan from NM on Jun 16, 2008 11:09 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Actually that could be a good thing with Gillaspie...

I think that might make him more likely to sign, get his pro career started, and then declare all out war on all 29 teams that passed on him, particularly those picking in the range he had expected to be picked. I would expect nothing less from a Gamer.

Paul Pierce

did something very similar. Before each and every game, he takes his warm up shots and shouts the names of every player drafted before him (I’m looking at you, Antwan Jameson).

Gillaspie can get his revenge by putting that bat to the baseball to play a game of “tag” with the other teams players’ bodies. Then no one can say he doesn’t have any “power” when another player is knocked silly.

by sectionop92 on Jun 16, 2008 10:45 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Unless he thinks he can get into the Top 20 or so next season

He’s better off signing this year, cut a year off his development time to reach the majors, and make up some of the money that way. And the sooner he makes the majors and make all the teams who passed him up pay for not selecting him.

Last year’s end of first round got roughly $100-200K more than what the 37th pick of 2007 draft. So if he signs quickly and rise fast, he would make that money up quickly, particularly since the Giants only have Castillo penciled in for 2009-2010 right now, and Rohlinger is the only prospect ahead of him right now.

The best revenge is making the majors by 2010 and starting and hitting well. :^)

Yeah, that is a distinct possibility that Posey could sit out until then, but I have to assume the Giants realize that time is the essence for Posey, the sooner he’s in the system, the sooner he’s moving up the system, particularly if they hope for him to have any chance of taking over in 2010, though they might do it anyway, as it wouldn’t be the first time that a player with a major league glove but developing bat gets thrown out there to start.

Get excited, folks. We’ve got a future John Halama in the house!

Ari Ronick, a 6-foot-5 lefthander who is the nephew of the Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson, has lost velocity and pitches in the mid-80s, sitting at 87 mph at his best this spring. One scout likened him to former big leaguer John Halama for his size and solid ability to spot his changeup and breaking ball for strikes.
