minor lines, 6/13/08
AAA: Fresno lost to Portland 7-4 (10 innings)
Fresno: LF Eugenio Velez: 2 for 5, 3B, SO, CS
Fresno: 3B Julio Cordido: 3 for 4
Portland: LF Chase Headley: 2 for 5, HR, 2B, 2 SO
Portland: 2B Matt Antonelli: 2 for 4, HBP
Fresno: RHP Matt Palmer: 6.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 10 K--1 HB, 1 WP
Fresno: LHP Geno Espineli: 2.0 IP, 1 K
Fresno: RHP Jesse Foppert: 0.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB--1 HR, 2 WP
With three singles, Cordido led the Grizzlies' ten-hit attack, but his AVG remains below .250. Three other Grizzlies had two hits each, including Velez who had his 2nd triple and whose SB/CS line is now 7/5. Headley, the Padres' top prospect, had another big game, including his 13th HR, a shot estimated at 450 feet to lead of the 10th inning, and also his 24th double. He also had an outfield assist to throw out a runner at the plate. Even with a slot start in April in which he barely managed a .700 OPS, his season line is now .305/.383/.556. Antonelli, who entered the season as the Padres' second best prospect, had a rare multi-hit line to raise his AVG to .172.
Palmer, who was already the league leader in strikeouts, had a season-high 10 K. He is also the league leader in walks but walked just two, although once again he was not particularly efficient with his pitch count, requiring 114 pitches (66 strikes) through six innings. His ERA remains just above 4.50. Two more scoreless, in fact perfect, innings for Espineli lowered his ERA to 1.17. Foppert retired just two of the eight batters he faced in the 7th inning as his ERA rose to 5.74, and it could have been worse as all three of his bequeathed runners were stranded. He threw just 10 of 28 pitches for strikes.
AA: Connecticut lost to Altoona 7-3
Connecticut: LF Eddy Martinez-Esteve: 2 for 3, BB
Connecticut: 2B Olma Rosario: 2 for 4, 2 2B, E
Connecticut: RHP Adam Cowart: 5.0 IP, 10 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 0 K--1 PO
Connecticut: RHP Brooks McNiven: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R
Four Defenders had two hits each. Among them, were Rosario, who had his 14th and 15th doubles but also his 12th error, and EME, who also drew one of two Defenders walks to reach base three times, which improved his OBP to .372, although unfortunately his OBP remains higher than his SLG.
Cowart allowed ten or more hits for the second time in his last three starts, boosting his BAA above .300. Uncharacteristically, his GO/AO ratio has also been below 1.00 over his last three starts. After eight appearances with Fresno, McNiven returned to Connecticut, where he made four very good starts to begin the season.
A+: San Jose defeated Bakersfield 11-7 (11 innings)
San Jose: 2B Matt Downs: 3 for 5, 3 2B, BB, SO, SB, CS
San Jose: C Pablo Sandoval: 4 for 5, HR, SO
San Jose: DH Andy D'Alessio: 2 for 6, HR, 3 SO
Bakersfield: SS Marcus Lemon: 3 for 6, PO, 3 E
San Jose: LHP Clayton Tanner: 4.0+ IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 4 K--3 WP
San Jose: RHP Mike Musgrave: 3.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 K--1 PO, 1 BK
Sandoval's four hits accounted for a quarter of the Giants' sixteen hits and raised his AVG to .366. He connected for his 11th HR, while D'Alessio connected for his 8th HR. On the other hand, the hat trick put D'Alessio's SO/AB ratio back above 30%. Downs had three doubles, raising his XBH/H ratio above 40%. The Rangers' Lemon, the 20-year-old son of former major leaguer Chet Lemon, had three hits, raising his OBP above .400, but he also raised his error total to 17.
Tanner had his least effective start in a month, raising his ERA back to 4.41. Musgrave pitched three scoreless innings, including stranding the only runner he inherited from Tanner, lowering his ERA to 2.62.
A-: Augusta defeated Greenville 11-0
Augusta: 1B Angel Villalona: 1 for 4, HBP, 3 SO
Augusta: C Jackson Williams: 2 for 3, HR, BB, HBP
Augusta: SS Charlier Culberson: 4 for 4, HR, 2B, E
Augusta: RHP T.J. Brewer: 6.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K
Augusta: RHP Waldis Joaquin: 3.0 IP, 3 K
Culberson had his best game of the year with four hits, raising his AVG to .222, although he also committed his 26th error. Williams, who like Culberson has struggled this year, also reached base four times. They both connected for their 2nd HRs. Villalona returned to the lineup for the first time in a week. He reached base twice, but the hat trick raised his SO/AB ratio to 28%.
Brewer and Joaquin combined for the shutout. For Brewer, this was his best start in a couple months. He has a 3.72 ERA after a dozen starts this year. Joaquin pitched three perfect innings for his first save.
ssA: Salem-Keizer begins their season June 17th
R: Scottsdale begins their season June 22nd
DSL: Giants lost to Marlins 7-2
Dominican: RF Sundrendy Windster: 2 for 3, 2B, BB
Dominican: RHP Bertoni Garcia: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K
The 19-year-old Windster was the only Giant with multiple hits, raising his AVG to .258 through 31 AB. The 16-year-old Garcia (born in July 1991) made his second pro appearance, pitching a scoreless 7th and 8th inning.

I doubt it but...
maybe Culberson and Williams are finally adjusting, and this may be a sign of some decent production from here on out. Too bad it took them half a season to do so.
Good for Charlie
Hopefully, Charlie will continue to hit well, as he has raised his average significantly in the past few weeks. I suppose we just have to chock up his fielding to growing pains – cause it sure is painful.
I wonder if Foppert is finished.
Good to see AnVil back in the lineup.
He's only 18 or 19
so errors for Charlie at SS of all positions is expected. I think I remember hearing Jeter made like 50 some errors in rookie ball.
Still – .222 and 26 errors? Does he also have more CS than SB?

Culberson's struggles not unanticipated
Before he was hired by the Diamondbacks organization, Carlos Gomez had a great series on the Hardball Times website called Bullpen Mechanics. He analyzed many of the 2007 draft choices, including Culberson. He pointed out that Culberson was likely to have some difficulties adjusting to higher levels of pitching, but that he would eventually have a bit more pop than the average middle infielder.
Culberson
he has a 7 game hitting streak during which he is 11 for 20 with 3 doubles and a homerun. His June stats are pretty good (other than the fact he has 0 walks). Hopefully he is turning the corner.

Fairley is listed on the AZL Giants roster.

Adopted Giant Brian Wilson: One of the few reasons to watch this year.
Thanks for posting the roster
Funny they should list the ages, height and weight of the manager and coaching staff. Don’t tell me the Giants are keeping tabs on them for a possible September call up… they are still younger than some of the players they’ve run out there in recent years.
But all kidding aside, some of the players on the Rookie League team are 23 and 24 years old… likely non-prospects and organizational filler. Let’s hope the more advanced recent draftees (namely Posey, Gillaspie, and Kieschnick) don’t get lumped in with this crowd and get sent to SLK or maybe even Low A instead if they sign early enough.

so John White is going to play the entire infield?
I’m not sure that’s a sound strategy

The roster may be fairly accurate in the sense that I don’t expect to many of these names will be on the Volcanoes roster, but on the other hand, I don’t really think this has been updated recently. Other than Fairley, did all of these guys end last year in the AZL. I think I saw that Josue Gomez has been released by the organization, but he is still listed there.
The good thing
Is that now we don’t have to rush Culberson or Fairley in any way, given our draft class performs to expectations.
it's always noonan somewhere

Another HBP for Angel?
Are we gonna have to start sending non-prospects out to charge the mound?
I have set Dave Roberts free; if he comes back, it was meant to be.
promotion
If we’re talking about what level a particular player should be at, the Giants should promote closer Danny Otero from Low A. He’s old for the two levels he’s pitched at so far, but the numbers are unreal. In 45 games over the two years, he’s saved 35 games while giving up 3 ER and 31 hits 47 innings. His WHIP in that time is 0.93 … giving up 5.94 hits per 9 innings and 1.46 walks while striking out 8.03 per 9 innings. He’s yet to give up an earned run this year.
GO/AO ratio
is that ground out to air out?
Less arm, more talk. Raisingcain is a GAMER.
Adopted Giant: Henry Sosa
Less of D'Alessio
I have thought less of D’Alessio than many. A 30% strikeout rate just isn’t going to cut it, particularly when you are a college player playing mostly against players who are your age or younger.
