Adding Depth?
Is it just me or does Sabean not believe in adding depth? I was going over the signings today and a name that I had forgotten jumped up at me. The Braves recently signed Jorge Julio to a minor league deal.
Julio is not the same guy as before, we all know that, however he still has a pretty live fastball and can strikeout a whole bunch of guys still. I understand that we have a lot of guys down in Triple-A, but I'm sure Julio would be better than at least one of them.
This has also been something that I have noticed Sabes has not done too much of...the whole minor league deal thing to add depth. Why?

do we need more pitching? I guess I don’t know a ton about the minor league teams, but it seems to me that this organization is literally overflowing with young arms. I could be 10000% wrong on that, though.
literally overflowing with young arms?
not figuratively overflowing?

You obviously haven’t seen our literal flow lately.

I'm literally overflowing with gratitude
...that Sabean hasn’t done anything useless like that so far.
/stops to mop up the overflow/
Your 2011 SF Giants: the 2008 Augusta Greenjackets!
hometown: this is true and I did not overlook those 2 however, thats what…1? I see multiple teams adding guys to simply see if they can re-gain their stuff or not. Most of the time not, but sometimes they turn out good.
Another point that I have is that when Barry zito got demoted to the pen this season, what was the reason that he came back for himself? If you recall, the issue was not having a pitcher to pitch that game somewhere down the line. If we had proper depth, he would have missed that start and somebody else would have done it. Rather than him starting in place of himself.
these are just thoughts and me noticing things. The one thing that i give him credit for this season is the draft.
1) The Giants upper minor leagues are already overloaded with project-type pitcher (especially relievers), the team is going to have some trouble finding room for mid-season promotions, let alone bringing in even more old vets.
2) What would the Giants do with a guy like Julio? The bullpen is already loaded with a combination of “project players” and young guys who need innings. Julio would just be another Tyler Walker, stealing opportunities from guys who actually have a future with the team
3) Zito returned because Correia got injured.

Weren’t guys like Stanton , Fassero and Herges examples of taking flyers on guys like that?

Not Stanton
We traded that kid who pitched a no-hitter in the WBC for him.

I do realize that we have an overload of arms. I am merely stating an observation. Also this post was not just a cry for the services of Jorge Julio. It is also for position players that i feel we failed to sign. i.e Jorge Cantu, Dallas McPherson, various others.
also, this has to do with me loving to give and take chances. but then thats a whole different story and tale.
I agree about Cantu and McPherson
but those guys were offseason acquisitions, not in-season. In-season dumpster diving rarely pays dividends.

Really
Isn’t adding Jorge Julio just a countdown until he goes into nuclear meltdown mode? He’s much more meant for the Mets or Phillies than us.
it's always noonan somewhere
I kept trying to look up Jorge Julio's stats
but I keep ending up on Tyler Walker’s BBRef page.

The only way I want Jorge Julio is if you hold a gun to my head and say “Jorge Julio or Armando Benitez.”
I’ll pick Jorge Julio because I’ll smile thinking “99 CAREER SAVES!!!!!1un.” Really, though. He’s awful.

It’s you. It’s not Sabes fault you weren’t paying attention over the Winter, when he signed Fortunato, Yabu, Sanderson, and Keven Gryboski – as well as Foppert, altho I can’t remember precisely when he was resigned.
Interesting that a team supposedly so deep in pitching signs so many project relievers.
Just saying.

That's an urban myth
Spread by the conspiracy of doctors Jobe and Andrews.
In truth, you only need three pitchers to handle an entire season’s workload. So long as they’re built like bulls.

Funny thing is, they say the opposite about bulls.

Instant Depth can be achieved with Roberts
if a cinderblock is chained to his leg and he is slipped overboard.
