Open Gameday Thread, 6/12

San Francisco Giants at Colorado Rockies, Jun 12, 2008 12:05 PM PDT

It's like a Zorro thing, but much more offensive. Go, go Jonathan Sanchez.

And, for some reason, the Jamey Carroll one (third from top-left) makes me giggle. Helton's needed to be forceful and inexact in order to make it noticeable.

Your finest work, Grant. And hopefully, today will be among Jonathan’s finest work. Not of the poop-wang drawing milieu, however.

How did I miss the latest brilliantly translated quote from Ichiro?

Playing on this team and seeing what is happening around me, I feel that something is beginning to fall apart. But, if I was not in this situation, and I was objectively watching what just happened this week, I would probably be drinking a lot of beers and booing.

Awesomest

The Understated Ichiro is an awesome book. It’s just quotes culled from media sources, all the wacky, witty, deep, wise, and funny things he has said.

Favorite Ichiro quote of all time:

“I hope he arouses the fire that’s dormant in the innermost recesses of my soul. I plan to face him with the zeal of a challenger.”

- Ichiro, last year, upon facing Daisuke Matsuzaka for the first time in the US.

This is mine

On returning to Cleveland to play a makeup game:

"To tell the truth, I’m not excited to go to Cleveland, but we have to," Ichiro said through an interpreter. "If I ever saw myself saying I’m excited going to Cleveland, I’d punch myself in the face, because I’m lying."

But you’d be wrong. It just makes the sub-humans in Pacifica take off their shirts.

The difference between Tony Gwynn and Neifi Perez is about 10 hits for every 100 at-bats. The difference between Pacifica and a normal city is about 10 freaks for every 100 people. It doesn’t sound like much, but you sure notice the difference.

Him too, but that was understandable considering they needed pitching and already had Atkins and Stewart in the organization.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 12, 2008 12:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Well its fine if you actually draft talent. They passed up on so many better players and went for the “safe” pick in Reynolds.

Too early to judge Reynolds. he was awfully good at Stanford. Remember, 8 other teams passed on Lincecum.

Being good in college means nothing though. And he hasn’t been that good in the minors, or thus far in the majors. His stuff isn’t that great, and likely won’t play well in Coors. The pick made no sense then, makes no sense now.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 12, 2008 1:03 PM PDT up reply actions

I don’t think that’s really fair. Guy’s thrown 132 innings of pro ball and 34.1 going into his debut with Colorado. He’s disappointing for someone who went so high in the draft, but I’m not gonna say he’s over or anything two years after he was drafted.

He should be adequate, but comparing him to where he was drafted (overdrafted), to some of the other pitchers available at that pick and he is a disappointment.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 12, 2008 1:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Picking him so high was a pretty boneheaded move, IMO. He had nice years before that monster season and rode that all the way to the bank. Good for him, bad for the Rockies.

2006 is looking like a pretty great draft year, isn’t it? In addition to the guys already mentioned, there’s Andrew Miller, Scherzer, Joba, and who knows who else. Lotta talent.

Not a fan of Andrew Miller. Talk about a guy with terrible mechanics and command. He’s a bust.

FIP of 3.60 right now. He’s very good and will likely get better.

by xanthan on Jun 12, 2008 1:07 PM PDT up reply actions

But everyone is aware of the Marlins problems defensively. He also has an awful WHIP, and with his mechanics he’ll likely have trouble with command his entire career. And with his stuff you would assume he’d be able to keep the hits down, he doesn’t. I predict either arm injuries or ineffectiveness or both. Which is a shame since he has a special arm. I think he’s utter fools gold.

I actually don’t mind the sport at all. I just don’t like its rules.

I pull for the Sharks when I can muster the interest, though.

Since they changed the rules following the lockout I stopped caring. Wasn’t that what they didn’t want?

I do find it ridiculous that they’ve rendered a third period three goal lead completely useless with the new rules – though I understand the point.

What I really take issue with is the fighting. It’s complete antiquated bullshit for an American Pro League to have fighting rules.
