Giants Reportedly Sign Dominican Prospect

According to ESPN , the Giants have agreed to terms with 16-year old outfielder Rafael Rodriguez.

Comment: To many, he is a duplicate of Vladimir Guerrero because of his size and power with the bat. Rodriguez can work the entire outfield and drive the ball anywhere. He has reportedly accepted an offer from the San Francisco Giants worth $2.5 million.

Another Dominican diaper dandy. I like it. For all that cash money he’d better be like a mini Vlad.

Would this signing be any good if we only used him for seven days every month? Three if you’re on a certain type of drug.

A's payroll, 2007: 73.5 million

A’s payroll, 2008: 48 million

and on top of that, they had fewer high draft picks.

The A’s actually have cash out the wazoo right now. I’m hoping they’ll spend it to go over-slot as needed on their draft picks.

Payroll savings

Giants had said budget would be mid-90’s for 2008 but ended up around $85-87M (what I heard) so they saved around $8-10M on the payroll this year, just the money they will need to sign Rodriguez, Posey, Gillaspie, Kieschnick, and the rest.

Draft

I appreciate that in the past few years the Giants are spending money and energy in the DR and other Latin American countries. However, isn’t it about time that a draft of foreign born players is instituted so that big money teams don’t dominate this market?

by APGiantsFan on Jun 12, 2008 10:25 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes

It is time.

I agree, it’s time to put these guys in the draft pool rather than just make it a bidding war.

by FluLikeSymptoms on Jun 12, 2008 10:48 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I disagree. Having these kids in the draft would still make it a bidding war, or have you not noticed teams being cheap and being subject to draft picks bonus demands and so bypassing them in the draft, and having great talent fall to teams who have the budget to pay them. At least in this market, if teams do their homework, they can sign guys for less in front of teams with higher budgets like the Bostons and New Yorks of the world. Like how the Giants got Villalona for less money because he was comfortable with the scout who discovered him.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 12, 2008 10:52 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I actually agree with you in philosophy

as an ardent capitalist I don’t think there should even be a draft, philosophically speaking, there should just be an open market for all of these guys to offer their services to the highest bidder. But from a competitive balance standpoint, it doesn’t make much sense to have the draft for American players, ostensibly to benefit the weaker teams, and then make the international market that has become some important the last 10 or 20 years a free for all. I think they should stick to one approach or the other.

by FluLikeSymptoms on Jun 12, 2008 11:14 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

teams are not competing bodies in the same manner as rival corporations. All are franchises of the same entity, much as separate McDonalds’ or Applebees. The whole is as strong as the weakest franchise, and thats why the Tampa Bay (Devil) Rays this year are filling so many people with joy

I think the current system is fine. I think the competitive balance is fine too. It’s not like the big spenders have a huge advantage, IF these smaller market teams decided to actually spend money, there wouldn’t be as big a discrepancy. The Marlins for instance have the ability to spend money. They just choose not to. Same can be said of the Royals, who just now are starting to spend money on players, as they’ve drafted a Boras client 3 years in a row in the first round. The Twins have money, but Karl Pohlad is a cheapskate. Revenue sharing has helped too obviously, but I think some of these teams cry poor just a little much.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 12, 2008 11:34 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, some teams are cheap

But just because the Royals or Twins want to make a profit a little more than they want to compete, does not mean that the competitive imbalance is not there.

Let me put it this way, if two boys are building their own soap box derby racers and one was middle class while the other was rich and they each had to use their own money to buy the materials and the middle class boy had a small allowance while the rich boy had a big old trust fund that he could access whenever he wanted to then the rich boy has a competitive advantage. (run-on sentences FTW!) This would still be the case even if the middle class boy decides to keep some of his allowance to use elsewhere (whether saving it, buying candy or video games or buying a present for his mother).

Obviously what is not part of this analogy is revenue sharing. And any team that pockets revenue sharing money deserves our scorn. That still does not mean there is not a competitive imbalance.

Only 908 games until the end of Zito's contract

by thehavenot on Jun 12, 2008 1:02 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

True to an extent

Just because you have a lot of money to spend and spend it, does not mean that you spend it wisely. It just means your margin for error isn’t nearly as great as others because you can afford to make mistakes and fix them. Other teams don’t have that advantage, but I honestly think it makes teams do a better job. Because they have to make more calculated decisions.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 12, 2008 1:35 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

In some ways, I think it makes a low budget team easier to operate. You have an escape valve built in if you don’t want to sign a popular player to a long term deal (see jason Giambi). Even the smartest organization has to face huge amounts of public pressure to retain their stars, and very few can cut the cord. Thus, the small market team cries poor (on a player they never ment to sign at all), and away they go.

by tedfordfan on Jun 12, 2008 11:29 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

wow, that's a lot of money for a kid like this

I really like the fact that the Giants are being aggressive in international signings, that has contributed a lot to our farm system turnaround.

Nuekom was on KNBR a couple days after it was announced he was going to take over and they asked about the payroll and if it will stay at the same level. His response was that he thought they would continue to spend a similar amount of money on players but (this is a paraphrase not direct quote) “we are going to find a variety of ways to invest in talent” at which point Brian Murphy brought up Villalona. I think between these recent signings and what promises to be an expensive draft class (not shying away from tough sign guys) we’re starting to see that happen.

by FluLikeSymptoms on Jun 12, 2008 10:33 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Neukom

What I liked about another interview was he said that winning would be the criteria for business decisions for the Giants, then they will figure out how to do that. That suggests that they will raise money when necessary to do what they need to do. With his connections in the computer industry, he should be able to find new investors as needed, plus some might just reach out to him and let him know of their interest, just like how Neukom contacted Magowan long ago.

That sharply contrasts with the Tucker decision and the refusal to use the money they would have spent on Maddux on, say, a better RF than Tucker.

I love this

I had been harping on the Giants unwillingness to spend money in Latin America for sometime over the previous 6 years or so. Up until 2 years ago they really weren’t doing much in LA. I think we were banned from the Dominican for awhile though because our former scouting director there had molested kids at the Giants Academy. I forget his name….

But I love that we’re focusing more and more on procuring talent out of Latin America. That is after all where a lot of the talent is coming from these days. While it is a risk, they are no bigger a risk than any draft pick. And at least with these kids there’s considerable upside with a lot of them.

Yeah, I think it was that perv that hurt the Giants image for a while, and they weren’t even players before, that’s why they hired him, to build their name again.

I don’t know that this is where a lot of talent is coming from, I think the draft has a lot more latent talent, but it certainly is where we can pick up good talent easily with money. The caveat there is that the Dodgers and Yankees have thrown a lot of money at prospects like Guzman, Wily Mo Pena, who don’t develop into the studs that their money would have suggested.

I would argue that it is where a lot of talent is coming from. While some of the bigger signings have been failures, there have been a BUNCH of very cheap signings from Latin America that have panned out for teams, and likely been much bigger acquisitions then the teams who signed them could have imagined. Like Liriano, the Giants I think signed him for only 15,000. If you look at most team’s top 30 lists, they are littered with international signings from Latin America, and the same goes for some of the best players in baseball. Guys like Vlad, Santana, Ortiz, Ervin Santana, Bartolo Colon, Reyes, Soriano, King Feliz, Volquez, K-Rod etc.

Your right, it was for 900,000.

Paperwork problems

As it has been reported before the Giants were unable to sign Angel Joseph, a promising young latino player, because of a paperwork dispute. This article from today’s NY Times states that the Giants did tender an offer but it was never consumated because Angel was unable to obtain a birth certificate.

Angel’s parents were born in Haiti and had immigrated to the Dominican Republic to work in the sugar cane fields. Apprently there is a crackdown by the Dominican government on Haitian immigrants including on their children even when they are born in the DR like Angel.

Because if so, that leaves us with AnVil, Posey, Mad Bum, Timmy 2, Sosa, and this Rafael Rodriguez guy as top prospects. Me likey.

Not sure if he’s as good, but if he signed for 2.5 mill, that’s 400,000 more than what Villalona signed for.

I would think so

Both for the money, as the other replier stated, but because the best description I saw with Angel was Andres Gallaraga, but Rodriguez is being compared to Vlad Guerrero. Much more desirable.

Salcedo?

What happened to that guy? I know the Indians were supposed to have signed him, but that turned out to be wrong. Is he a chupacabra? Can he not be seen by mortal eyes?

I only bring this up because when I saw this post I thought it would be about Salcedo.

hummmm…..(stroking chin)

by tyrannoman on Jun 12, 2008 1:30 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

apparently

Salcedo is older than once thought and he’s not really creating buzz anymore and the Indians deny having reached an agreement with him.

The Indians could also leave a large footprint on this year’s international signing class, though one formerly hot name who had been linked to them seems to have lost much of his luster. Several international sources have said the Indians had agreed with Dominican shortstop Edward Salcedo for a $2.9 million deal earlier this year, but months later no deal has been announced.

Nearly a dozen international scouts, agents and front-office officials have told Baseball America they believe Salcedo is older than his reported age of 16. Agent Scott Boras, whose Scott Boras Corp. represents Salcedo, said in March that Salcedo’s documents are in order, but for now he remains unsigned.

Major League Baseball acknowledged two and a half months ago that it was investigating Salcedo’s personal documentation—a routine process for Latin American signees—while rumors of Salcedo’s signing with the Indians began back in February. The Indians have not acknowledged any agreement with Salcedo, and all indications are that Salcedo is no longer generating big buzz on the international scene.

I really hope this kid signs with you guys....

Cause if he ends up signing somewhere else its gonna look really bad for this board. Remember the signing period does not officially begin until July 2nd and its possible someone comes in with a better offer… just like the A’s are guarenteed nothing atm just because they make the news doesn’t mean thats how things will end up. I remember how we were connected to Wallace/Hicks in the draft and ended up with Weeks(warming up to him now but still…) and you guys were talking up Smoak and got Posey. Just don’t celebrate prematurely.

Dude, if you’re gonna shit all over someone for saying “wow this might be really cool” when nobody’s going out and printing up Rodriguez jerseys quite yet, you miss the point of being a fan. How dare we posit about a possible signing from a credible source? How dare we consider the implications of such an aquisition. We’re just assholes, aren’t we? The sourcing on this is pretty thin. Don’t get me wrong; I’m happy to hear it. But the signing period is a few weeks away, and saying someone “reportedly” agreed to a contract isn’t the same as having the player in hand.

Baseball America says the Padres are ready to pounce on three big name Dominican/Latino prospects. No names mentioned, though…anyone know anything about this? I’ll believe the Mads will shovel money away for real talent when I see the press release(s).

As for the A’s fans, down here they tend to be wanna-be cool, college douchebags who spike their hair with way too much hair gel and look like pasty white gorillas because they visit GNC way too much and develop paunches between lifting and vegging out. I just let them cry and act as a support group leader who knocks their self-confidence to a level lower than that of a Georgia bumpkin or on par with Nancy Grace.

If the article says “he has accepted the offer” I think it’s pretty fair to assume that the player is a Giant. I’m not saying another team wouldn’t do it, but it would be kind of unethical for someone else to now swoop in with a better offer after the player and agent have accepted the offer, and it would also be unethical for the agent and player to change their mind. I would assume the teams would not operate like this. They all had chances to make Rodriguez a better offer, and they all chose not to do it. Why would they suddenly make an effort to sign the player now, after he has said negotiations are over?? Can A’s fans please be sore losing assholes on their own board and not ours??

John Barr given the green light

John Barr has the financial backing from ownership to be aggressive in international signings.

Giants scouting director John Barr said he has the financial backing from ownership to be aggressive in signing international free agents, but he denied a report that the Giants have agreed to a $2.5 million bonus to sign Dominican teenage outfielder Rafael Rodriguez.

Barr said he has not reached deals in principle with any international free agents, though he confirmed that Rodriguez has worked out at the Giants’ Dominican complex and the club has interest. The international signing period begins July 2.

“We intend to play by the rules,” Barr said.

Rodriguez reportedly has drawn comparisons to Vladimir Guerrero because of his combination of size, athleticism and power potential. Barr said Rodriguez couldn’t sign until July 13, when he turns 16.

Whether it’s Rodriguez or other international free agents, Barr said he has the bankroll to compete for the top talent.

“We are going to exhaust all avenues to get the best players for this organization,” Barr said.

And hey, if ESPN can mess up on a report, I feel a little better about myself when I misspell a word or something in one of my own reports.

In other words.....

If a deal has been reached, the Giants are not at liberty to say because the period for signing international free-agents has not begun yet. And thus would constitute cheating! But everyone does it. I seem to remember hearing Villalona had agreed to a deal early because he was buddy buddy with our Scout down there who’d know him for like 3 years.
