Upgrade the 2 hole?
Was looking at some fantasy info, and found this:
"
|
|
http://sports.yahoo.com/fantasy/mlb/news?slug=mb-splitsville061008
Which made me think that the FO may be buyers at the deadline looking for someone in the 2 hole in the lineup to get on base in front of these guys. Also made me think that they aren't going to trade Winn or Molina at the deadline, unless the potential suitors were bowled over by their production.
As we all pretty much agree on, the FO wont get rid of Bengie, because they can't lose his production, and they dont have anyone to replace him at C, much less the leadership he provides to the young staff.
As far as Winn goes, though, he's not one to bowl you over or beat you over the head with his stats, I mean you'd actually have to do in depth looks to find that this guy is really having a semi-productive year, just on a mediocre-bad team. His defense goes unnoticed, his offense is steady, but not overwhelming on any level, and it'd be hard to get equal replacement level for him value-wise, even though we have Nate ready to take his place.
*sigh*
I think that, you have the team that will be on the field for the rest of the year, save injuries, callups, or minor acquisitions (see above). We just may even be buyers at the deadline yet.
So who on the current team or what minor acquisition would you like to see to fill the 2 hole?...(keep in mind that he has to fill a defensive spot as well.)
This FanPost is reader-generated, and it does not necessarily reflect the views of McCovey Chronicles. If the author uses filler to achieve the minimum word requirement, a moderator may edit the FanPost for his or her own amusement.

I’m sorry but the phrase
“Fill the 2 hole” made me laugh, waaay too much.
Maybe use Durham in the 2-spot for now? His OBP is back up and he seems to be running OK.
1. Freddie LF
2. Ray 2B
3. Randy RF
4. Bengie C
5. Aaron CF
6. John 1B
7. Castilo 3B
8. Omar SS
9. Pitcher
That’s my lineup.

Ray is running OK ... for now
until a pregnant lady in the stands looks at him crosseyed and his hammy pops. But yeah, throw him out there in the #2 spot. (Caveat: I have no idea what Ray’s OBP is, but I’m assuming it’s OK if xanthan is lobbying for him there.)
Also, if Winn or Molina or Durham is moved, the Giants don’t need to replace their production this year. This team is going nowhere in 08, so replacing Winn with Schierholtz means the difference b/t 72 and 73 wins. Or something.

I thought about starting a “OT: Your First Computer” diary once but decided against. Here’s mine, anyway:

Fun with the 2 hole
Why wouldn’t we do somthing like this?
1. Lewis
2. Winn
3. Rowand
4. Molina
5. Durham/Bowker

Yeah
Seriously, just put Winn in the 2-hole. Unless, of course, that Winn decides he has to be a “2-hole hitter,” which somehow means a lot of intentional groundouts and contact hitting, instead of just going up to bat as normal.
Really, Durham would be fine in the 2-hole as well.

+1
there are plenty of 2-hitters in the lineup. upgrading the middle of the order would indirectly make the 2 hole stronger. Not to say they ought to be buyers a the deadline, but I wouldnt really blame it on the lack of a 2 hitter as much as I would the general crappiness of everyone other than Lewis, Winn, Bengie and Rowand this year. Winn at 2, followed by Rowand makes too much sense I guess.

I actually like castillo in the 2 spot
If for no other reason than I think it has dramatically descreased his GIDP propensity.
When Castillo was batting in the bottom of the order, he would typically come up to bat with some combination of the 3-4-5 hitters on base. He is horrible w/ runners on base (to the tune of a .217/.265/.349 slash line), so this is a bad combination. Plenty of GIDP and not very many runs driven in.
Putting him higher in the order lowers the # of PA’s he has w/ men on, in which cases he is batting much better (.311/.364.529 w/ bases empty).
Now, why the guy cannot hit w/ men on is a whole other issue (and a large part of my hate for Jose) but he is actually very decent if not good w/ the bases empty. (remember my comments about garbage time performer, he went what, 4/5 yesterday once the team was down 8 runs?)
I hate to say it, but if you restrict yourself to using the players currently on the 25 man roster, then batting Castillo 2nd actually makes a lot of sense. He is less likely to GIDP as well as more likely to get on base than if you bat him somewhere where there is a higher chance of having runners on.

Castillo also has a .980 OPS when the team is either up or down by more than 4 runs. He’s a regular Albert Pujols when it doesn’t matter.

the problem with castillo...
as you show is that he GIDP way too often and his #’s with men on is terrible. Well who do you have in front of him but a high OBP guy in Lewis…to the tune of .370 or so….so 75% of the time that freddie’s on he’s gonna GIDP? So…we may as well have a .100 OBP guy leading off….? What’s the sense in that?

castillo should not hit 2nd
He’s a hacker, he doesn’t get on base, he grounds into double plays and he does this right away which means if Lewis gets on it won’t matter just like last night. I’d bat Durham 2nd because he has a much higher OBP, he sees more pitches, and if Lewis is on and Ray is batting left the right side is open for him. What evidence is there that Castillo would hit with men on base more in the 6 or 7 hole than the 2 hole? I’d bat him 8th, you want your 8 hitter to be a hack in the NL. well...
essentially he said that basically put two #1 batters in your lineup, and made your #3 hitter the number 4 hitter after the first trip around the lineup, so you get your #3 hitter (best hitter on team) up in the 1st inning, and then is the clean up batter for the rest of the night…
..and in this case Castillo hits so well with no one on, and so crappy with any one on, what’s to lose by batting him behind the pitcher and in front of freddie?

There’s just no way that Castillo sustains that over time, though.
For example. in almost 1000 ABs over his career with the bases empty, Castillos sports a fine 256/.289/.393 line. Which is essentially identical to his career totals regardless of situation.

I think you’re overestimating park factors here. Except for power, AT&T plays pretty average for hitters.
I’m not opposed, necessarily, to trying Castillo ninth under the presumption that it makes him a bottom-order leadoff hitter, but I think that 119 at bats of what appears to be a sample sized anomoly is not a good enough reason to do it. Maybe the idea that even a .300 OBP is enough of an improvement in the 9-hole over a pitcher (even at the expense of production from the 8-hole) to make a significant difference in the run scoring potential of a lineup would be a good reason – but again, I don’t understand the math or, necessarily, the logic behind that enough to support it.
My point is that Castillo has a 1000 ab situation track record to suggest that he will not hit .300 with the bases empty for any prolonged period of time. Doing things for the hell of it is not enough of a reason to do them, and doing them for the hell of it based on unsupportable sample sizes is foolhardy.
There are actual reasons to try something like this. I just don’t understand them.
And there was no good reason to bat Velez second. That was also foolhardly, and another example of Bochy’s inability to fill out a decent lineup card when he “believes” in a guy for an unsupportable reason.

The Baseball Lineup Generator...
...at Baseball Musings generally spits out a lineup with the pitcher hitting 8th, after you’ve input stats for each of your nine hitters. I don’t pretend to understand how they got the generator to work, and I’m inclined to not believe anything LaRussa says, but it does come out that way the majority of the time.

Rob Neyer at ESPN wrote a blog entry or two on this very subject when the Brewers’ announced that Kendell would be hitting ninth before the season. His numbers showed an increase of around 1 run per year with the pitcher hitting eighth (I can’t remember the work, just the conclusion). I dunno how many MLB’ers would cheerfully be told they are hitting after the pitcher, however. Theses are folks with a great deal of pride (for the most part), and I’m sure they don’t want to be “shown up” like that.

Since I’m going to base all of my player evaluations on Baseball Mogul, I’ve been using Bowker for about 5 years as my leadoff batter and he’s been nothing short of awesome. Routinely hits around .300/.400/.450.
But he’ll inevitable get hurt right before I make the playoffs, which leaves me trying to make a post-season run without my all-star leadoff man.
Also, Nick Noonan is going to work out REALLY well.
Baseball Mogul said so.

According to the game of Baseball Mogul I currently have going, Jose Castillo will turn out to be one of the absolute superstars in the game in a few years.
Sadly for me, he’s on the Pirates in that game. CURSE YOU WRETCHED FATE!

Hey, he won a gold glove in my game, too! His hitting never caught on, though, as he’s bounced around from Pittsburgh to Florida to Boston to Cleveland to Colorado, mostly as a back-up, only even breaking a .700 OPS 4 times in his twelve year career.

Oh, and we should DEFINITELY trade for Daric Barton at the deadline next year. CASH MONEY.

Castillo
offensively, he’s basically a slightly better Pedro Feliz with less pop. no one would ever confuse Feliz with a 2-hitter, so why Castillo?
My lineup.
1. Lewis
2. Winn
3. Rowand
4. Molina (I hate this part)
5. Durham
6. Bowker/Aurilia
7. Castillo
8. Omar
9. Pitcher
My no Omar lineup is this:
1. Lewis
2. Burriss
3. Winn
4. Rowand
5. Molina
6. Durham
7. Bowker/Aurilia
8. Castillo
9. Pitcher

We should just bench Omar for a few games of “rest” and put Burriss in the 2 hole.

The ups and downs
The Giants’ lineup would likely be slightly more potent if they moved Ray Durham up to second and Aaron Rowand up to cleanup, with Bengie Molina dropping down to fifth. That should provide even more runners for Bengie and take his slow speed out of the middle of more innings. Jose Castillo clearly needs to drop down to seventh. He hasn’t been that bad, but he doesn’t get on base often enough to hit near the top of the order.

Forgetting about someone?
I’d still like to see Frandsen become the #2 hitter in the lineup. IF he can find his way to the majors and get enough time to adjust like he has at every other level, he’d be the right kind of hitter, batting around .300 with a lot of doubles and a fair amount of sleep.
Of course, that’s a lot of hope, and he has to come back from the injury strong.
