Open Music Thread
Many days, albums, and Giants losses have passed since we last indulged the darker side of our internet geekdom. Yes, I refer to the music snobbery that permeates through the site like the unspeakably foul mixture of hash and body odor at a Widespread Panic show.
What recent albums have struck your fancy?
My choices:
The National - Boxer: The safest call goes first. Boxer is prrobably the defining indie rock album of 2007. My late adoption of this band irks me to no end.
The Hold Steady- Stay Positive: I love anything this band produces. Sadly, this album is weaker IMO than their previous 2 efforts, lacking the narrative cohesion of Seperation Sunday and the fun of Boys and Girls. It does have a number of good songs on it though including the titular track, "Sequestered in Memphis" and "Both Crosses". The first half of the album contains a number of borderline disasters though.
Pennywise- Reason to Believe: Pennywise may have put out the same album for the last 15 years (although their last couple versions of that album kind of sucked). Their free 2008 effort represents a significant improvement and near return to the glory days of skate punk.
Okkervil River- The Stage Names: Quite poppy, still very good.
Predictions:
JoshfromHolly will recommend Jessica Simpson's new country album
Grant will recommend a number of bands that I have never heard of.

Lately, I’ve been listening to Michael Jackson’s remastered Thriller album. Say what you want about him, but the dude crafted a gem of a record.
Thriller is one of my favorite songs ever.
And, yeah, the dude had talent. Too bad about the crazy, though.
Only 915 games until the end of Zito's contract
Steve Reich, “Music for 18 Musicians”
Kronos Quartet, “Pieces of Africa”

Notgardo, I still love you -- but you're grounded. No Guitar Hero for a month, no Cheez-Its for two months, and NO BASEBALL! This hurts me as much as it hurts you.
Lyrics Born’s new one, Everywhere at Once, is freaking great.

Yay Music.
That National album is very good.
Some albums in my playlist lately. I listen to a bunch of stuff but I usually fall into IDM, Ambient, Hip-Hop, Indie, and some Jazzy stuff. But the truth is, I really love all music.
Milieu – A Warm Wooden Hollow, lovely ambient, warm in tone and texture. Fans of Brian Eno or Aphex Twin’s ambient releases would love this album.
Kleerup – Kleerup, sugary sweet Swedish electro-pop. You can’t help but tap your foot while you listen to this one. Great for driving lonely stretches of highway or cruising your city at night.
Elbow – Seldom Seen Kid, Elbow’s new album really hit the spot with me. Production is really interesting and most of the songs just clicked with me. If you’ve ever liked any of their albums, you’ll most likely love this one. This is probably the top pick for indie fans.
Aphex Twin – Live at Coachella, a tasty bootleg from the master himself. It’s Aphex Twin, need I say more?
I can share a sample mp3 from any of these albums if anyone is interested.
Forgot two Hip-Hop records
The new CYNE album, Starship Utopia, is fantastic. The title track is just straight out dope. The production along with the members of CYNE’s flows are amazing. I really picked up some great vibes from this record, pieces of it are twinged with a faint nostalgic feeling, old samples and electronic smatterings all add to the good times.
And the new Atmosphere album is pretty good. White dudes holdin’ it down.
OMG new Atmosphere album?! Where was I?

eh
I didn’t like it as much. Slug seems to have lost some of the anger. Money will do that to you.
If you like rap
I would recommend Fort Minor. I don’t really know how famous they are, maybe you’ve heard of them (Mike Shinoda from Linkin Park is the mainstay – he works with Styles of Beyond often, and recently Busta Rhymes). Some really good songs if you’re into that kind of thing.
Less arm, more talk. Raisingcain is a GAMER.
Adopted Giant: Henry Sosa
Damn you kids and your newfangled music. The only things I have that are new are:
The Go! Team – Thunder, Lightning, Strike (2004)
Ray Davies – Other People’s Lives (2006) & Working Man’s Cafe (2007)
Don't you it's gonna be all right. But not right now.

I really like the albums I picked up this week.
Verve Remixed 4 – If you like Nina Simone & Astrud Gilberto
Live in Phily – John Legend
Jean Grae – Jeanius
Al Green – Lay it Down
Adopted father of the AnVil / GIANTSPACE™ returns!
I can’t remeber the last time I actually listened to music when it was new, possibly White Stripes – Elephant. In any case, I’ve been getting my fill of Exile on Main Street as of late.
I think I was born in the wrong decade.
The 2008 San Francisco Giants season is currently listed at Threat Level: Midnight.
It may not be as good as their first two, but I’m liking Portishead’s Third.
I just realized that besides that, I haven’t gotten any new music in a quite a long time. The last band I really got into was Beirut, which I would recommend to anyone.
Since discovering Pandora (PC music)...
...I’ve been wallowing in Portishead…and Massive Attack.
At some point I’m going to buy that Live in NYC CD.

Not so much into albums lately…But I have fallen in love with more than a few singles from the advertising world….
Don’t Speak (I Came to Make a Bang) by Eagles of Death Metal
This was used in the new Nike football (soccer) commercial made by Guy Ritchie…the song and the commercial kick ass! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anwlpTgbQTE
List of Demands (Reparations) by Saul Williams
From Nike as well. This time it’s in an ad for their training equipment
Daydream in Blue by I Monster
Used in an AT&T mobile ad.
Cobrastyle by The Teddybears ft. Mad Cobra
On the FIFA 06 soundtrack
An Honest Mistake by The Bravery
On the MVP Baseball 2005 soundtrack
The one album I have gotten into lately is the self-titled recording by Birdy Nam Nam. If you’re into some kickass DJ’ing…these are your boys. Some serious turntabalism going on here, and this French foursome is tight! They were also the World Team winners at the DMC DJ Championships back in 2002.
Adoptive papa to Omar...so basically I'm screwed.
Ha, I’ve heard three of these artists on shows created by Josh Schwartz. Eagles of Death Metal’s Flames Go Higher was on an episode of The OC, as was that Bravery track. And Cobrastyle was in the pilot episode of Chuck.
Of the three groups, I like the Bravery best.

Love the Bravery. I picked that “Honest Mistake” track back when we had that thread about best debut songs. I saw them open for Depeche Mode a few years ago at Madison Square Garden. Great show by both. I just saw Duran Duran in Central Park this past Saturday and the show was fantastic. They did some of the new album, but they knew the crowd wanted the hits. Going to a few more concerts this summer, The Cure, Blondie, and an all 80’s concert with Human League, Flock of Seagulls, ABC and Belinda Carlisle. I’m on the fence about going to an English Beat concert next month, because I’ve already seen them three times in the last two years. This time however, they have The Fixx and The Alarm opening for them, which is why I’m considering seeing them again.

Yes!
MVP 2005 had a killer soundtrack.
I still get goosebumps listening to Dropkick’s version of Tessie. Our team needs a really cool drinking song.
Something sort of funny/sarcastic about the Giants here.
Dropkick’s Tessie is just about the most ridiculous baseball song out there. Now if it was about our team, then maybe it’s a winner. But the Red Sox?!? You know this is a Giants site, right?

MVP 05 had an awesome soundtrack. Too bad the track list was really short. It drove me crazy after playing several games. Fortunately, I have the PC version, so I can change the songs to my liking.
You know, it’s funny you mention that. I had it on PS2 and quickly grew sick of the soundtrack while playing it. I’ve since gotten rid of the game and when I stumbled upon it a few weeks back, I was like YA….THIS SONG KICKS ASS!

The last album I listened to was Cake’s Pressure Chief. I’ve had it forever, but damned if I don’t love that album. The last album I bought was… mrphnhmm…. what was it…?
Oh yeah, RBF’s Monkeys for Nothin’ and the Chimps for Free (or something like that). Massive, completely lazy letdown, particularly after how really, really awesome We’re Not Happy ‘Til You’re Not Happy was.
My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.
I love RBF, but ska is pretty much dead these days. I just spend my days hoping for a reunion by The Specials. Who buys many CD’s these days when you can download tracks you like?? I’ve heard some people do this illegally for free, but that would be a terrible thing to do. I am going to buy the new CD by the Foxboro Hot Tubs though. In case you don’t know, they’re Green Day under an alias.
Brian Sabean's new dad: Firm believer in corporal punishment
Oh man...I do terrible things every damn day.
Find a copy (I had to go virtually to the UK to find mine) of the vinyl version of “Dance Craze” , live ska as you like it by The Specials , The English Beat , The Selecter , etc.
Vinyl. Really. Because the CD version has NONE of the Madness cuts on it due to some legal BS , so you won’t get the killer version of “One Step Beyond”

listen to this
I’m diggin No Age right now, nouns. Teen Creeps is great at max volume
I wanted to adopt, but all the good looking babies were taken
The National are an amazing band, I listen to Alligator and Boxer all the time. I still can’t believe i haven’t gotten sick of those two albums yet.
But my big musical obsession lately has been Nick Cave and artists related to him:
The Birthday Party Prayers on Fire
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds The Firstborn is Dead, Tender Prey, The Good Son, Let Love In, The Boatman’s Call, No More Shall We Part, Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! (AOTY so far, imo)
Grinderman Grinderman
Dirty Three Ocean Songs
Mick Harvey Two of Diamonds
Einstürzende Neubaten Halber Mensch, Haus Der Lüge
and some of his work with Warren Ellis on movie soundtracks and PJ Harvey, but her connection to Nick Cave lasted about four months so I don’t know if that counts.
It’s getting kind of ridiculous – I think he’s won my last.fm weekly charts (with NC&TBS) for a month straight, but whatever. It’s awesome.
Also saw Bruce Springsteen & The E-Street Band the other night so I’ve been listening to them a lot and there’s been some Leonard Cohen in there too. (Songs of Love and Hate especially.)
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
Grinderman is fantastic
I need to check out the new one.
Bengie: Like an Aurilia kidney stone, slow-moving and tough to get out.
The weird thing about Nick Cave for me
I never feel like listening to him. Like, I’m never sitting around thinking “I should listen to something” or browsing through my iTunes (yeah, yeah, I know) and suddenly I think “Nick Cave! Of course! That’s exactly what I feel like!”
But every time I listen to him he’s awesome.
I can’t reconcile these two things.
If you like things that are funny, perhaps you will enjoy ChatterBalks Dot Com?
The best record of 2007 was....
Angels of Light – We Are Him.
That is all.
"Don't trust anyone under the age of 30" - Brian Sabean
alternating between
Floater – All of their albums are great. I just saw them on Friday Night (5/30) in Sactown and they sounded great as always
Rush’s – Fly by Night, early 70s, but has a nice sound and was the first album that neil peart did most of the lyric writing
Avenged Sevenfold – City of Evil. Freaking awesome album. The texturing of the guitars is unbelievable.

Oh man I love Rush. Always have. One of the few things I thank my mother for: getting me into the great music of the 60s and 70s.

good year so far...
My favorite thing so far is the School of Language record—more cool experimental power pop from the Field Music guys!
New ones from Subtle, Destroyer, American Music Club and Jackie O Motherfucker are really great, too. The Robert Forster solo record is good comfort for us Go-Betweens fans still mourning the loss of Grant Mclennan. And, believe or not, the new Elvis Costello album is excellent.
The hip hop record I like most so far is the Guilty Simpson record. I like that Stones Throw is putting out good gangster rap records (anyone else into that Roc C record?)
There have also been some really good African reissues this year—the Nigeria Special and Syliphone Years collections are amazing!
And the new Wire song they’re giving away is also fantastic…
I'm really addicted...
to the Killers “Sam’s Town” and Fall Out Boy “From Under the Cork Tree”, especially ‘Sophomore Slump or Comeback of the Year’ and ‘XO’. “Life on Mars” (single) by Michelle Branch is also really good, and I’ve discovered some Fair to Midland, like “Walls of Jericho” and “Tall Tales Taste Like Sour Grapes.”
www.notthisday.com ....coming September 26th and 27th at the Pinnacle Event Center, Denver.
I must be getting old(er)
because i really like the Raconteurs album. A lot.
Also in heavy rotation lately:
The new Autolux single
Watershed by Opeth
Songs in A&E by Spiritualized
and always Deep Purple and Thin Lizzy.
Billy Hayes: Nine more big-league plate appearances than you.
Deep Purple is forever made of win.

UNPOPULAR OPINION
Deep Purple (third album) is better than Machine Head. Yep.
..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.
Metallica has always topped my list...
but Rush has been making a run at the top spot lately. Such a fantastic band with a huge amount of beautiful songs.
Proud pappa of....STEVE HOLM!!
Albums i have been listening to a lot lately...
In defense of the Genre by Say Anything
Paper Walls by Yellowcard
E. Von Dahl Killed The Locals by The Matches
In with The Out Crowd by Less Than Jake
Everything In Transit by Jack’s Mannequin
Just a sampling, mind you…
Todd Jennings: Next up on the Non-prospect Backup Catcher Train. Next Stop: The Pine at AT&T Park
New stuff by old bands
Because I do have two ears and a functioning brain, I’m lovin the new Opeth…...as well as the 5.1-surround version of Still Life, which is well worth getting for any fan.
Also the new Secret Chiefs 3 is pretty badass, its a bunch of John Zorn songs so the compositions will wear thin on most people, but these guys get the best sounds in the business.
Past that, its a double-edged sword of Phish’s “Esther” going through my head the remaining 23 hours of the day…....less than that, like three riffs cycling constantly, but they’re beautiful riffs.
In more recent music, I’ve been listening to stuff from my My Little Airport, which is an indie band based in Hong Kong. Their songs are in both Cantonese and English. They’re wildly different from anything else in HK pop, although they sound pretty similar to some American indie pop bands. Their songs have quirky names like “Leo, Are You Still Jumping Out of Windows in Expensive Clothes?” Good stuff.
British Sea Power—Do You Like Rock Music? The question is rhetorical. When they’re going full throttle, this scratches a Nirvana itch I’d forgotten I once had. When they’re slow, they’re still pretty good.
Andrew Bird’s Soldier On EP. Two or three excellent new ones, killer Dylan cover, and some remakes/remodels. I’m pretty obsessive about him.
I downloaded the Plants and Animals album on Grant’s recommendation. I was underwhelmed.

In Flames....
Yeah, the new In Flames isn’t that great, but I do find the new single listenable, and I like track 4, “Alias”....
Tha Carter 3 is really really out. Just got the real leak three days ago.
I’d say the Foals album is pretty solid – about half the songs are catchy enough to make you want to listen to them a few times. Kind of like the Klaxons, with less noise vibe and more ‘80s pop sensibility….

But I haven’t found a new band or album that I’ve liked enough to procure in a long time. I’m not even sure how long, but it’s been more than five years.
I listen to older stuff. Recently it’s been a lot of Paul Simon. I don’t like anything by him after Graceland (and that one had to grow on me) so it’s been pretty much his self-titled album, and “There Goes Rymin’ Simon.”
I’ve also been listening to a bunch of Bad Religion and Less Than Jake. But it’s mostly been Paul Simon. Don’t know why I’ve been wanting to listen to him. I haven’t even really been listening to Simon and Garfunkle. And I think I like that better than his solo stuff. It’s just been what I’ve been in the mood for, I guess.
Oh and SHAMELESS PLUG
I’m playing some of my solo, acoustic stuff tomorrow at Mama Buzz Cafe in Oakland at 7:00 with my band mate and some other guy. I’ll be playing my six acoustic songs and then me and my friend will play three of our band’s old songs together acoustically. Just putting that out there. Not that any one of you will come.
Only 915 games until the end of Zito's contract
Phoenix is 350 miles from Vegas.
And I know a father who had a son
He longed to tell him all the reasons for the things he’d done
He came a long way just to explain
He kissed his boy as he lay sleeping, then he turned around and headed home again

I’ve been in a ‘90s phase, as I’m making up for what I was actually listening to (Blues Traveler, Dave Matthews, Phish, etc….) during that decade.
Jawbox – For Your Own Special Sweetheart
Chavez – Ride the Fader
Dinosaur Jr. – You’re Living All Over Me
Guided by Voices – All 72 albums
And so on…
apropos GBV
We opened for Superdrag last night, so I’ve been rocking “Last Call for Vitriol” all day. Man, they were/are freaking great.
Billy Hayes: Nine more big-league plate appearances than you.
I've been on
Animal collective – Water Curses (and pretty much everything they do)
The Knife – Deep Cuts (creepy Swedish pop)
M.I.A. – Kala (“Paper Planes” might be the best song ever recorded.
Islands – Return to the Sea (good) & Arm’s Way (not as good)
Built to Spill – Keep It like a secret (classic)
The Ruby Suns – Sea Lion (great sound, new band)
Modest Mouse – This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About
The Octopus Project – ENTIRE DISCOGRAPHY. they kick so much ass.
obligatory indie fanboy “CAN’T WAIT FOR THE NEW WOLF PARADE WHEEEE!”
and the less obligatory. Excited for the Red Album by weezer.

Return to the Sea is really good.
If you like things that are funny, perhaps you will enjoy ChatterBalks Dot Com?
Most of it isn't really "recent", but
here’s some of the stuff I’ve been listening to lately
Sara Bareilles – “Little Voice”
The Essentials – “The Essentials”
Terence Blanchard – “Flow”
Massive Attack – “Mezzanine”
Ruth Laredo – “Alexander Scriabin: The Complete Piano Sonatas”
Miles Davis – “On the Corner” and “In a Silent Way”
The Brecker Brothers – “Return of the Brecker Brothers”
Scott McClain: "They're kids. Scare 'em."
Mezzanine is such an awesome album.

Not only says it - but insists upon it! ... Democracy is lovely, but baseball's more mature." BVCE supports SF Dugout and Manny Burriss.

Matt, the lead singer of the National, is a good friend of mine, so I’ll tell him about the love he’s getting from the McCoven. It will certainly make him happier than this discovery did a couple of months back:

As for me, my work has me always listening to older music, so I’ve fallen way out of step with the new stuff. I had to write something about Joni Mitchell recently, though, and I ran across this amazing amateur performance clip on YouTube that everyone here will appreciate for the wardrobe, at least:
some stuff I'm listening to
Raising Sand – Robert Plant & A. Kraus: produced by T-Bone. Best sounding record i’ve heard in a LONG LONG time. their cover of Prine’s “Killing the Blues” is sheer brilliance.
Roots & Crowns: Califone – textural and unlike most other emo music
Just started listening to Will Oldham/Bonnie Prince Billy – great depressing stuff…
Infinity – Journey : holds up pretty well, especially Neil’s guitar work.

You’re jerking our chain with that description, right? Regardless, that is a great album.
no, i'm just a moron.
evidently i have a flawed understanding of what constitutes emo music.
after reading wiki on the subject, i was WAY off target.
post-rock is just about as meaningless, tho, when you think about it.
i don’t know how i would categorize Califone. acoustient? hobo-erotic? what?

One more for the road...
The Bad Plus – “Prog”: jazz covers of pop tunes from guys with serious chops.
