minor lines, 5/8/08

AAA: Fresno lost to New Orleans 1-0

Fresno: C Eli Whiteside: 1 for 3
New Orleans: RF Val Pascucci: 1 for 3, HR

Fresno: RHP Victor Santos: 7.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K--1 HR
Fresno: LHP Erick Threets: 1.0 IP, 1 BB
New Orleans: RHP Claudio Vargas: 7.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 K

The 28-year-old Whiteside, who began the year in the Twins organization, received his first start for Fresno.  His single provided one of just four Grizzly baserunners.  The Mets' 29-year-old Pascucci, who hits 34 HRs for the Marlins' PCL affiliate last year, provided the game's only run with a solo HR to lead off the 7th inning.

Santos tied his season lows in H, BB and ER allowed, but he suffered tough-luck loss.  It was his first loss of the season, even with an ERA that remains above 4.00.  Threets made his third rehab appearance.  The walk was the first he has issued in that time.  Vargas, who spent all of last year in the majors, made his third minor league start of the year.  This start was much more effective than his previous start when he allowed 6 ER in 4.0 IP.  He threw 61 of 82 pitches for strikes.

AA: Connecticut defeated Harrisburg 9-5

Connecticut: CF Antoan Richardson: 2 for 3, 3B, BB, HBP, SO, 2 SB
Connecticut: RF Carlos Sosa: 3 for 4, HR, 2B
Connecticut: 1B Travis Ishikawa: 2 for 5, HR, 2 SO
Connecticut: LF Eddy Martinez-Esteve: 4 for 5, 2B

Connecticut: RHP Dave McKae: 6.0 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
Connecticut: RHP Justin Hedrick: 2.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 K--1 HR
Harrisburg: RHP Shairon Martis: 5.0 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 7 K--1 HR

EME's four hits paced the Defenders' sixteen hit attack and improved his AVG to .302.  Sosa and Ishikawa connected for their 4th and 3rd HRs, respectively.  For Ishikawa, it was his fifth straight game with multiple hits.  Richardson reached base four times, bringing his OBP above the .300 mark, and stole his 9th and 10th bases.

McKae had just his second start this year longer than 5.0 IP as he improved his W-L record to 3-1.  Hedrick allowed a run but improved his K/BB ratio to just better than 2.00.  He has 10 K and 1 BB over his last three appearances.  The 21-year-old Martis, whom the Giants traded to the Nationals a couple years ago, had his least effective start since his first start of the season as those are the only two starts in which he has allowed more than 2 ER.  He set a new season with 9 H but also a new season high with 7 K.

A+: San Jose defeated Lake Elsinore 4-2

San Jose: SS Omar Vizquel: 0 for 2
San Jose: DH Pablo Sandoval: 0 for 1, 2 BB, HBP
San Jose: 3B Ryan Rolinger: 2 for 4, HR
San Jose: LF Bobby Felmy: 3 for 4, PO
San Jose: 1B Brett Pill: 2 for 4, HR, 2B

San Jose: RHP Tim Alderson: 6.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 7 K--2 WP
San Jose: RHP Taylor Wilding: 1.0 IP, 1 K

Rohlinger and Pill both connected for their 4th HRs.  Pill's two-run HR in the 7th inning turned a one-run deficit into a one-run lead.  Felmy's three singles paced the Giants' nine-hit attack and raised his AVG to .294.  Sandoval had his eight-game hitting streak snapped but still reached base three times.  Vizquel played five innings to finish his rehab stint with San Jose.

After allowing 3 ERs in each of his past two starts, Alderson allowed just 2 ER in this start, maintaining his ERA at 3.03 and improving his W-L record to 4-1 after seven starts.  He set a new season high with 7 K.  Wilding worked a perfect 9th inning for his 5th save.

A-: Augusta defeated Columbus 6-4
(extending winning streak to nine games)

Augusta: LF Garrett Baker: 2 for 4, SO
Augusta: 1B Angel Villalona: 2 for 4, HR, SO, E

Augusta: LHP Craig Clark: 4.2 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 5 K--1 WP
Augusta: RHP Orlando Yntema: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 1 K

Every GreenJacket starter had a hit, but Baker and Villalona were the only ones with multiple hits, raising their respective AVGs to .243 and .198.  Villalona's HR was just his 2nd of the season, while he committed his 5th error.  Baker had his fourth consecutive multi-hit game, helping him to a .355 AVG so far in May after a .197 AVG in April.

Clark, who had been particularly dominant in his past two starts, had just his second start with more than one earned run allowed.  His ERA rose back above 3.00.  His K/BB ratio remains above 5.00.  After making five starts, Yntema made his first relief apperance of the year.  He allowed three baserunners but no runs.

I really hope Threets solves his control problems. I think he can be a dominant reliever if he can spot his pitches better. His arm is pretty freakish.

Interesting about Whiteside, I hadn’t heard about that transaction. I guess the situation at catcher really is dire if they’re signing 28-yo journeyman AAA players, huh?

Also, go TI/EME/Angel!

Ya, the catcher sitch in Fresno was like, past bottom of the barrel. They had already cleared the bottom of the barrel and were digging through the dirt there for a few days. The word Sunday was they were going to pick up some minor league FA than call someone up.

Whiteside sounds really familiar but I’m not sure why. I know he’s from the Twings org where he failed to make their 25 man roster out of ST, and he played in the Baltimore org too. Othrtwise I don’t know a heck of a lot about him.

What sort of projectability do you guys see Timmy II having. He is a really big kid and looks to be filling out (oh the ass on him… he could be in a rap video). Could he conceivably gain a little more umph on the fastball? That would be scary. Brute, BVCE, Steve, anyone.

Ahem. I don’t know how I’d project TimA for the time being as I haven’t seen him throw. He told me he can be a starter and has no problems throwing a lot. Still only 19 so the sky is the limit. When he was first drafted I said “closer” for him. But who knows?

Its nice to see, Ish & EME’s splits are pretty drastic but they seem to be working out of their early season slumps…or I guess year and 1/2 long slumps. I had almost completely lost hope for them but now they’re starting to tease my imagination again with their potential.

Rohlinger is also exceeding my expectations as far as .avg is concerned and Pill and Villalona look like they may be emerging from an early season slumber.

Timmy II

I really have some ambivalence about the aggressive move of starting Alderson in the Cal League (while simulateneously teaching him a new delivery). He’s holding his own against older competition, but I feel like they might doing him more justice allowing him to dominate the Sally. Particularly if you look at some of his signature stats, he’s only managing a 2.3 K/BB ratio this year, with only a 6.5 k/9 and a fairly high (given his HS career) 2.8 BB/9.

By contrast, Bumgarner who doesn’t have near the reputation for control and command is zipping along with a shiny 5.0 K/BB, 11.25 k/9, and 2.25 bb/9.

Perhaps not a big issue, but I’d feel a little better if Timmy was left in a position that seemed a little less of a struggle for him, at least for his first half a year.

My boy ain't fat, he's just big boned. Big bat, too.

by Roger on May 9, 2008 9:44 AM PDT reply reply   0 recs

But by pushing him to high A right away, they’re forcing him to use his secondary pitches and not just get away with blowing people away with his fb and good control. Thus, he’s going to have rough patches, but will develop as a pitcher.

They couldn’t push Bumgarner because he doesn’t have the secondary pitches to go against advanced hitting, so they let him develop the change and slider in low A this year and push him aggressively later when he’s comfortable with those pitches.

I think they want to be aggressive with both, but are aggressive with Tim now because he’s more developed, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Bumgarner caught him or even surpassed him w/in 2 years as his off speed stuff gets better and he’s able to depend on them.

Delaying the disappointment: I adopt Hector Sanchez because he's only 17.

by tedfordfan on May 9, 2008 10:25 AM PDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

I think this analysis is correct

I think that’s exactly what the organization was thinking when they made the assignments. My guess (and I did not stay at a national chain hotel last night) is that Bumgarner will never reach that exalted potential of his, but Alderson will. Of course, I hope I’m wrong and they both kick Lincecum and Cain to the curb on their way to the Hall of Fame.

by BruteSentiment on May 9, 2008 11:03 AM PDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

Why's that, Brute

You seem to think that complaining about the organization pushing players too quickly is different or even diametrically opposed to complaining that they’re advancing players too slowly (or, as I’ve also done, complaining that they’re moving them up and down in rapid, bizarre, and arbitrary ways). They’re not different complaints—they’re the exact same one: poor definition of appropriate development curves for their particular players.

My boy ain't fat, he's just big boned. Big bat, too.

by Roger on May 9, 2008 11:27 AM PDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

Mostly just because of the irony.

But I’d disagree that these are the same complaint.

All the old complaints of holding players back came under the reign of Hiatt. Fred Stanley has been much more aggressive in his moves. Outside of the handling of the shortstop situation (which I believe has more to do with Sabean than Stanley), I have no complaints on how they’re handling the players.

And that includes Alderson. I think he’s responded very well to this challenge, has been ready for it, and it is helping his development. Not every young prospect would respond this way, but he has.

He does need to throw his changeup a LOT more, however.

Mostly because the decision who is in the majors comes down to Sabes…and in the offseason, and in ST after Vizquel’s injury, for whatever reason, he did not go after a major league shortstop either to start or back up.

I also would believe it’s his decision to pass up Ochoa in favor of the young guys.

That’s pretty much it.

Timmy II

It would probably be good for Timmy II’s psyche to run up a good stat line in Low A, but the truth of the matter is that at such a low level in the minors stats don’t mean as much as how a player is developing. I think it is good that the Giants are pushing TAllderson a bit rather than have him dominate in the Sally League. In the long run it will be better for his development. And really, he is by no means struggling in San Jose but is more than holding his own by all accounts.

Can some one clue me in here?

I don’t know a lot about the Eastern League. I was wondering if Harrisburg & Binghamton’s staff are considered weak sisters this season? Or perhaps lefties tend to see the ball better there or that kind of thing?

To be perfectly honest I did not think Travis would have this kind of streak in him at the AA level going by previous years. With 15BB & 19 K’s I am beginning to wonder just how intrigued I should get. Regardless I am enjoying the ride while it lasts.

I don’t think Ishikawa has much of a future in this organization. Bowker looks pretty good as a lefty hitting first base option, and even if he doesn’t pan out, it’s more likely they throw some big money at a free agent like Texiera before they turn to Travis.

Am I correct in thinking

He’s out of options at this point? He was brought up in ‘06, which means officially he had to be sent down to start the season in both ‘07 and ‘08. That should mean he’ll have to be waived to send him to the minors in ST ‘09? And of course if they get in a position this winter where they need to do some 40-man maneuvering, his is one of the spots which could be in jeopardy.

Before cashing out

Why not promote Travis Ishikawa and see how he performs in Fresno rather than the dungeon that is Dodd? What does the organization have to lose? SF does not have a longterm 1b solution playing for Fresno at this time and Ish did surprising well when he was called up for a cup of coffee a couple of summers ago. Before breaking the bank on Tex, Dunn etc check on some inhouse prospects. What do they have to lose?

Otherwise I agree with your point. Its the same reasons giving Harper is chance in Fresno. I believe those conditions are still valid now.

The fact you ask why Harper shouldn’t be there proves my point.

Last season he was a AA Mets farm hind. The Giants picked him up cheaply and gave him an opportunity to impress in Spring Training. He did so enough to get another opportunity – AAA. If he makes the best of AAA he can get a farther opportunity. If he can’t he still helps the team by forcing a higher level of skills development for others in achieve enable to get a promotion. Either way the same logic would apply to any "questionable" infield prospect that turns up in the Giants system.

Dungeon?????

How many times have you visited Dodd? Did you happen to follow what Velez, and Bowker did last year? No one has ever claimed it’s a home run hitter’s paradise, but Dodd doesn’t retard contact hitters. It took Nate and Freddie 3/4’s of a season to figure it out. The basic problem with Dodd is the Giants have sent players here who have had a great deal of difficulty adjusting to a higher level of pitching. EME and TI are prime examples. They are both on their third time around and finally seem to be getting it. And if you are an EME fan, I don’t care if he hits .500; he still can’t pull the ball, doesn’t have an arm, can’t run and doesn’t hustle. Other then that, he’s fine.

But to those of you who get yourself wrapped up in stats, come on out to Dodd for a couple of games and then decide. We have a first class airport you can fly into and some enticing casino’s to keep you occupied between games.

Never been to Dodd Stadium

For most SF prospects Dodd is a black hole, dungeon. TI has struggled there and then had a same sample size of success in SF. Since SF does not has a 1b prospect at Fresno and TI did well with his cup of coffee why not give him a shot in the PCL before discarding him? What does the organization have to lose with giving the fella a shot?

As far as EME goes, he has raked everywhere but Dodd. Was it the higher level of competition? Dunno. Was it his health? Possibly. I believe his raking days are still ahead of him. You have been going to games, I have been reading boxscores – “who you gonna believe – me or your lying eyes?”

And I would not call Bowker a contact hitter, the brother Ks too often.

Now in about 1 month of play he has almost equaled his season totals in walks and I might get to happily eat my words! To put him in a prospect category I would need more convincing.

A side note on the assumption of the Giants spending on a free agent first baseman. I would not. If the rumblings of ownership changes are real I could see this franchise going fiscally conservative ( say pay roll in the 70 -80 mil range) for a couple years to easy in new owners. With the Zito & Rowand contracts that does not leave much for trophy free agent hunting.

" Their still Shitty" - Major Leagues the movie.
I am a Giants fan. Thus I enjoy my pain. Currently enjoying it more then usual.

I find this comment interesting in that if I had said that two years ago Bowker had a future at first base, most all the responses would have been about Ishikawa looking pretty good as a lefty hitting first base option. These situations have a way of working themselves out.

I hadn’t thought about it yet, but I do think Roger is right that Ishikawa will be out of options next spring.

Ishikawa’s cup of coffee, while exciting at the time, helps show why it was sorta silly to start Burriss AND Bocock’s clocks so early in their development. Can we get Schoop, Noonan, and even Culberson into the mix this year?

It’s not quite that simple, as I think you are overlooking a couple things.
a) Ishikawa was already on the 40-man roster when he was first called up, having been added to the roster to protect him from the Rule 5 draft the previous winter.
b) Bocock and Burriss will have four option-years instead of three because they made their major league debuts so early.
