Turn over your couch cushions, bust up that piggy bank, the Giants are for sale...
Yes, that's right; the San Francisco Giants are for sale.
Although I am aware that many other posts have brought this rumor to our attention, none have presented us with an idea for who the next majority stakeholder should be.
I have said idea.
I heard Eddie Debartolo mentioned. Too trendy.
Mark Cuban wanted the Cubs, would he want the Giants? Naw, he's too high strung for me.
What people are missing is the obvious answer.
It's time that we as Giants fans took a stand. No longer shall we bitch and moan about what we would do with Zito, Durham, or Roberts. We all know that we are the most rational, most intelligent, most devoted baseball experts on the planet. No one could run this team better than us. Our cries will no longer fall on deaf ears. We've put up with this for too long. It's time for change.
This is why I propose that the patrons of McCovey Chronichles should come together as one to purchase Magowan's share of the San Francisco Giants. What would be better than thousands of baseball experts co-owning a team? Nothing. Nothing would be better.
We knew that Roberts was old. We knew that the AJ trade was stupid. We knew that Armando Benitez would not, in fact, "do his job." If we owned the team. The Giants would be in the World Series. Right now. Selig would just hand over the trophy 20% of the way through the season.
You may ask me: "Matt, how will thousand of different people decide what to do with the team. We could argue until hell freezes over, or at least until Zito's contract expires."
To this I say phooey. It wouldn't be a problem, since we would keep McCovey Chronicles up and running, and settle all front office decisions with an internet poll.
Then you might ask, "Matt, how would we know that the poll is an accurate scientific representation of the McCoven's actual opinion?"
Phooey again. If someone were to vote multiple times, it would only express their desire to see something happen even more, and their persistence should be rewarded.
We wouldn't have to hire scouts either, as the MCC has members in every part of the country, all baseball experts that could relay information back to the members of the site.
Obviously, we would have to establish some sort of managing hierarchy; I propose that we keep it as it is. MCC members would be awarded management roles according to their established contributions to the site. Others could be voted in. Now, I understand that we would have to raise a significant amount of capital to make this happen. So, find all the change you can. Smash that piggy bank open with your miniature Shinjo bat (I can't be the only person who has one). Dig through your car for those grease covered pennies. A donation link should be placed on the site immediately. Instead of going to a game provided to us by the current, inferior ownership, donate that money to the cause. If every visitor donated a dime to MCC, we'd have a million dollars within the month. You do the math.
This can work. We can do this. I proposed long ago that we all donated $20 to land Vlad. Don't let another opportunity be wasted.

Are there printed rumors that any stake would be up for sale, or is this just an extension of the McGowan retiring rumor? It seems to me that there would have to be a concerted cash out my multiple investors for a majority stake to be available. Even then it seems that there are probably enough minority shareholders that they might just grab up the larger stakes.

Apparently its not just a rumor
I was listenting to KNBR this morning and it sounds like Magowan will sell his share of the team and retire.

Sweetbreads are his favorite.
Actually organ meats gross me out. When we were discussing the early species of the genus Homo in my anthro class my prof pointed out that they achieved encephalization by eating brains and bone marrow from large animals to get the boost in caloric intake.
Which made me want to barf because ew. I did eat brain once and it scarred me for life. Also you can laugh at Homo now.

I'll gladly kick in $100
I want Roger to be the Minor League Coordinator/Draft Honcho, and Evan as the General Manager. Several of you could be the field manager; or maybe we could rotate that honor. Probably, the daily lineups could be generated by polling the McCoven.
Natto would be responsible for all artwork, graphics, and advertising. Brute and Baron get to handle publicity, press releases, etc. I’d like to coordinate the radio broadcasts. Andy in Fresno becomes the GM there (hey, we’re taking over everything).
Naturally, Grant would get to sit in the owner’s box. Rank has its privileges.

One point of contention:
We knew that the AJ trade was stupid.
I think you’d be hard pressed to find people who thought that trade was bad at the time it was made. It is horrible now, but at the time we were trading 2 pitchers with injury problems and a third with HR problems for an all-star catcher. It ended up being a HORRIBLE trade, but at the time it didn’t seem that bad to most.

It seemed like a terrible trade from the milisecond it hit the wire. Our primary need at that time was a closer and we were trading away the best internal candidate we had. And that wasn’t an after the fact judgment - Jon and Kruk and Kuip had bandied that suggestion about many times during the ‘03 season. The trade that day had to have been made with the idea that Herges would be an acceptable closer and cememted the ‘04 failures - for a very minor need with some issues that basic scouting and due diligence should have brought up (like he was an extreme groundball hitter who’s BA was inflated by the artificial turf on his home field.
I rent my clothes and wailed and did all sorts of biblical sorrowing that very afternoon.

Nathan was just coming off a major injury and Bonser and Liriano were both pitchers in the minors (which means they came with all the risks associated with young pitchers). AJ was/is an asset behind the plate. The fact that it ended up horribly bad is a shame, but you were one of the few who thought this trade was bad at the time. So, a feather in your cap, no doubt, but I think many people thought the Giants won the trade at the time. For example, BP’s take on it back in the day:
http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=2465
Brian Sabean pulled off an outstanding deal to replace Benito Santiago with Pierzynski at the cost of the standard package of promising/troubling arms
From the Twins perspective:
I’m genuinely surprised the Twins made this move as soon as they have. What if Joe Mauer has a bad camp? What if he breaks a leg? It isn’t like the package acquired was so tantalizing that they just had to make this move. Matt LeCroy isn’t a real fallback position if anything happens to Mauer, which means you’d be left considering people like Rob Bowen a lot more than you’d like as a contender. Dealing Pierzynski makes sense, but it should have been used as an opportunity to get something the Twins need (like a second baseman) or as part of a package to get rid of something they don’t (like Doug Mientkiewicz).
As it turns out today, it was some combination of the Twins front office being smarter than the Giants’ (no fucking shit) and luck. Granted, as you said, we needed a closer, but I really have no problem trading bullpen arms as they are way overvalued.

I, too
I remembered being shocked. Big gaping holes in the bullpen and the Giants trade their best bullpen arm. I wasn’t impressed with Pierzynski even at the time. So much of his hitting was the batting average. It shouldn’t take a genius to see that a lefty without a lot of pop and who has trouble walking more than 20 times in a season would not be very helpful in ATT.
So I thought it was bad had it just been Nathan for Pierzynski. The fact that two minor league pitchers were included just made it that much worse. And I had no idea that Liriano would be so good.

I thought it was a bad trade
Mostly because I fully expected Nathan to be an excellent setup/closing pitcher – I didn’t know he’d be quite this dominant. But like Roger said, we figured out Nen wasn’t coming back and Nathan was the best internal candidate for the job. I couldn’t believe they traded him away. Liriano is just the luck of the draw – and that’s if he ever does pan out. I know we needed to replace Benito, but not with a slow, widely-disliked-by-other-players guy. Those of you who don’t believe in team chemistry whatsoever should consider the case of Mr. Pierzynski.

That’s the thing, though…
It’s generally not such a big priority to get catchers who can hit. Instead of going out and trying to get valuable corner infielders, for instance, Sabean has LONG been preoccupied with giving away too much value for positions that aren’t going to give him very much back.
