Magowan to step down?
This seems like pretty big news.
Per Kawakami and Ratto:
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/sfgate/detail?blogid=22&entry_id=26359
Rumors that Peter Magowan may be ready to retire from his job as the Giants' managing general partner have been circulating for more than two weeks, but they picked up steam Wednesday night when a Chicago Tribune blog on the White Sox-Twins rain delay included a reference buried at the bottom to "a change in control coming soon" for the Giants.

If true I wonder if Sue Burns would step in as MGP, or if it would be one of the other investors. My biggest fear is that Larry Baer would step in as MGP.

There's a Fanshot about that story from yesterday
I find that news very interesting..
Magowan steps down, then… dun dun dun… bye bye Sabes? But that goes out the window if Rally Baer ends up in the driver’s seat.

P-Mags saved SF baseball in ‘93, gave us Barry Bonds for 14 years, and built a beautiful stadium without bankrupting the city. Oh, he also replies to angry fan letters with a personal letter of his own, as well as keep the payroll up in the top half of the league for most of his tenure here. I don’t know how responsible he is for the disasters of the past 4 seasons (I still blame Sabean) but he’s built up an astonishing amount of goodwill with me.
On another note, why is everyone so terrified of Larry Baer?

A four-game Giants losing streak should be enough to get a good rant from E posted here and an angry call to KNBR from “Salty in Clovis.”

Quick summary for those of us who tend to skip E rants? I thought it was pretty undeniable that Magowan saved the Giants from moving to Tampa.

The quick summary
The commish wanted baseball in San Francisco and would have blocked a move to Tampa. Lurie, angry about this, had no choice but to sell to our current illustrious owner.

I don't think you can doubt
that he deserves the credit for the stadium, though. He worked that out despite tremendous pressure against it from the commissioner’s office and fellow owners. And he brought Bonds here. That’s two pretty good hash marks in his favor.

Tim Kawakami + referencing throwaway line on a White Sox blog = skepticism alert.
That rumors have been circulating for weeks is cool. But I have a hard time believing this actually means things are heating up.

The White Sox blogger is either a Chicago Trib or Sun-Times Writer who used to write for the Merc and apparently has good contacts within the Giants organization. Better contacts than any Bay Area writer, apparently. So this info is probably legit.

Does Baer even have an ownership stake? IANAL, but I’m pretty sure you need an ownership stake in order to become a Managing General Partner, since, well, you’d need to be a Partner in the first place.

There’s no doubt in my mind that Magowan is being forced out here. Owners don’t “retire.” There are plenty of owners older than Magowan. They die as owners and leave the team to their spouses or kids like Harmon Burns did. Not only that, but Magowan is a lifelong Giant fan who has his dream job. If you ever wondered if it was Sabean or Magowan who was responsible for the Zito contract, this is all the evidence you need. Sabean gets a new contract, and Magowan gets forced out.
