Open Gameday Thread 2.0

When I went to college the first time, if the game wasn't televised, I would need to leave the CNN Headline News ticker on to follow the score from home.

Now, I'm in the middle of a class, listening to a professor yammer about something to do with Carthage or Edgar Allen Poe or genomes or something, and MLB Gameday just told me that Matt Cain's changeup just broke seven inches downward.

Progress is great. Still, don't get me started on how uncool my CD collection is now compared to that first time in college. I feel cheated.

Some stuff never makes it to CD.

And while I’m spending DAYS on Limewire you’re screwed there two ways: Modern recordings are saturated bcuz the engineers know you’re playing thru PC speakers…and you’re subject to what somebody else likes – which might not be what you like , and vice versa.

Yea...

New recordings fail…mp3s take off the high and low end of tracks and now songs are being produced so mp3s don’t hack off a lot, just making the entire song a worse quality.

One thing I love about San Jose State and what made me choose them as my first choice is that the undergrad stuff really accomodates the working adult, and not just for business or finance programs. They really understand that not everyone is cut out for college at 18, not everyone can afford it right away, and not everyone is happy with what they picked right out of high school. There, the atittude is “hey, you wanna learn? Great. We have it for you.”

It’s how me, a 26 year old dumb little girl who never had shit in her life, can still have dreams of doing all the extra curriculars, excelling in political science, and getting on with her life. Sure, I’ll be the old bitch at the parties, but who gives?

But no.

Matt Cain final stats: 2-15, 3.45.

by Grant Brisbee on May 8, 2008 11:52 AM PDT reply actions

The dirty little secret...

Cain is not as good as we like to think he is. His ERA will not be that low by the end of the season. His WHIP was 1.44, 34th out of 50 qualifying NL Starting Pitchers. He doesn’t seem to have the same life on his fastball as he did when he came up. He doesn’t quite have an out pitch yet. Not consistently anyway.

The good news is, he’s still young, still learning. He’s smart and seems to have a good attitude about things—even about the horrible team he pitches for. I’m sure he’d be at least a little bit better pitcher if he pitched for a team that could hit a little bit more and had a little more ability afield.

But this was a game he should’ve won. Yeah, the Giants could have scored more and fielded better, but Cain’s pitch counts are clearly hurting him, and he’s not finishing hitters consistently. That, more than anything did him in today, in my opinion.

That's all I can stands, I can't stands no more!

by tobias on May 8, 2008 12:02 PM PDT up reply actions

he’s had issues in the first half of all of his three full seasons so far and then turned it up in the second half. I really wish he’d put together a full season of being good.

Still a good AB..

Would you prefer him to go up there and say swing at two balls in the dirt and then look at a strike right down the middle?

This BETTER be the low point of the season. I don’t think I can take anymore of this shit.

14-18...could have been worse.

Bochy gets the L

Most of us here saw Cain’s 7th inning implosion coming a mile away. Bochy left him in there too long.

Story on Foxsports.com

Top 10 Worst Franchises in Pro Sports.

No. 1 on the list? You guessed it – the Pirates.

Ruben Rivera: Incompetent oaf, or mad genius?

by Stuttering John Tamargo on May 8, 2008 1:11 PM PDT reply actions

The Twins at number 7 is a complete joke. So are the reasons they give. ”’Moneyball’ is to baseball what frugal is to cheap” That analogy doesn’t even follow. Trading Johan Santana a puzzling move? Like they had a choice? The last half a decade of being at or near the top of their division.

The Rays deserve to be on the list, but they seem to have some honest hope for the immediate future, and are locking up talent for the long term. Top ten, sure, because of the history of incompetence, but top five… there are more hopeless franchises out there. Cough Cough.

Other than that, fun list.

Another sign the writer didn't do his homework

Listing the Twins but not including, among their bad roster moves, cutting David Ortiz in order to free up roster space for Rule 5 draftee Jose Morban.

I can think of about five or ten NHL teams that belong there before the Twins.

But yeah, posting an article about the Pirates being the worst franchise in pro sports on the same afternoon that they sweep the Giants— that’s definitely sending the word “ironic” into the Alanis Morissette zone.

I was taking a college test in ‘62 with a radio plug in my ear when McCovey lined out to Richardson in game 7. I know I raised up in my seat but didn’t quite realize until later that there was audio accompaniment . I was told later that it sounded like “fu…”.
