Marte DFA?

Indians May Designate Marte or Michaels

Outfielder Ben Francisco will join the Indians for Tuesday's game against the Yankees.  The Tribe will have to make room for him by then, and Mike Harrington believes the jobs of Andy Marte and Jason Michaels are at risk.  Marte could be designated for assignment, while Michaels might just be released.

Michaels, 32, has been awful in 21 games this year.  He earns $2.15MM this year.  Michaels typically hits lefties well, but he's been an easy out this year.

Marte, 24, is out of options and would have to clear waivers if the Indians try to demote him.  The formerly well-regarded prospect has only 16 plate appearances on the year.  He made the team after hitting .204/.333/.519 in 54 spring ABs.

mlb trade rumors

Hey, why not take a shot at Andy Marte? If the Indians do place him on waivers, Bocock could easily be sent down, Burris could man short, and Castillo could become jack of all infield trades! Sadlly, a guy hittng .204/..333/.519 makes me swoon, but that's the way it is.

A batting average of .077? He’ll fit right in!

But you know, his peripherals are pretty good. He seems to have good plate judgment, doesn’t strike out too much, gets the ball in the air, etc. There’s still a slim chance that the player he was a few years ago will resurface.

But Sabean didn’t want Dan Johnson or Jayson Nix or Jason Botts or who knows how many other potentially useful players, so there’s no reason to think he’ll want Marte.

Sad but true. Marte might not ever be much but I’m sure he’ll be more than whatever Castillo currently is.

It’s especially frustrating since some of Sabean’s great successes have been with former top prospects who never quite developed as hoped—Kent, Snow, Schmidt.

by Evan on May 5, 2008 1:07 PM PDT up reply actions

His “good plate discipline” resulted in a .322 OBP in 2006 and a .309 OBP last year in AAA.

That being said, he’s a perfect fit for the Giants!

by JT Jordan on May 5, 2008 11:19 AM PDT up reply actions

He had a pretty good OBP in AAA in 2005 at .372. I think he is young enough that he could turn things around. He also is a guy who has not been handled by the Indians very well and probably needs a change of scenery.

I believe he has more upside than Castillo.

by Squire_Boone on May 5, 2008 11:26 AM PDT up reply actions

Oh, no question his last two years have been dreadful. But in the two years before that, he looked like a future star. That talent is probably still in there somewhere.

I was referring to his plate judgment in his very brief time in the majors this year—he’s not swinging at pitches outside the strike zone, etc.

by Evan on May 5, 2008 1:09 PM PDT up reply actions

I’d be thrilled to have Marte, long shot though he is.

by Dan from NM on May 5, 2008 9:41 AM PDT reply actions

I really think that if Marte gets to the Giants on waivers, they have to pick him up. Castillo has been an utter disaster and at the very least, Marte has some upside and it’d appear he also has some power. Third base is a black hole right now, the Giants owe it to themselves to take a chance on a talented young guy in the hope that maybe he can recapture the sort of production he flashed when he was a top prospect.

I don’t expect him to get this far though, and I sadly, don’t expect that Sabean would claim him even if he did.

Do want. I’m tired of Castillo.

Why not Marte? I am in!

Did we pick up a sure fire second or third baseman since Saturday Morning? Gives the Giants the chance to slide Joe Castle into a second baseman/ utility infielder scrum. What’s the downside – Free the active roster of Durham or Aurilia or demote Bocock to a level he can learn at?

And in the off chance Marte does not provide a source of constant, prolonged and massive suchage the team might have a stop gap at third for longer then a season with out paying much of anything at an age the would not be afraid to let get Wally Pipped..

Agree with Evan

Marte would be a good addition with a large upside, for little cost. It’s not as if Castillo is lights out – in fact, he is costing us games. Plugging Marte in at 3B and letting him get his legs under him might be worth it. The problem, as Evan notes, is that Sabean has already passed up several inexpensive opportunities to possibly upgrade the offense and defense, and inexplicably seems set with this team until the deadline.

by Buck Henry on May 5, 2008 11:24 AM PDT reply actions

I hear you on Sabean passing some guys up, but Marte is a different situation.

Nix, Botts, and Johnson were not as highly touted as Marte was. At one point people were calling Marte a future MVP. Nobody ever said the same things about Johnson, Nix, and Botts.

by Squire_Boone on May 5, 2008 11:30 AM PDT up reply actions

I think there is a key differnce here though.

Marte would be at Third were the rest are at first. For some reason the current managemetn has a fetish for 650 OPS first basemen. No I can’t explain it but it is the only ting that fight the trend of the last several years.

Were as the last third base candidate under 30 to hit the wires and last tell the Giants turn ( that I am aware of) was Joe Castle. And he had played most of his games at second base. So If Marte hits the wires and makes past those in front of us pass him by there is recent president for Sabean picking him up.

I wonder if he would even make it to us on waivers. I think the A’s might pick him up. With Chavez out for an extended period they could give him a good look for nothing.

Yes

If he were DFA’d, the team would have 10 days to trade him or waive him. If he’s waived, then everyone in the AL gets a shot at him before any NL team. So if you really wanted a player DFA’d by an AL team, you’d be well advised to trade for him. Unless he’s Shea Hillenbrand.

If you don’t want him that much, then you can wait and try to pick him up for free off waivers. Unless he’s Shea Hillenbrand.

Looks like another OF is about to hit the market.

The Tigers have reportedly designated outfielder Jacque Jones for assignment and replaced him with Matt Joyce.

Might the Tigers have interest in Winn if he heats up??

Adopted Giant Brian Wilson: One of the few reasons to watch this year.

by sfgreg on May 5, 2008 1:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe, Yeah.

Even though Winn hasn’t done much so far, the Tigers OF has some problems with Sheff still hurting. Thames and Rayburn aren’t much either, though Rayburn is slightly interesting.

Winn would add some stability. I wonder if the Giants would eat some salary if they tried to move him? It’d be nice to clear up the roster space for someone like Nate.

by xanthan on May 5, 2008 1:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Though, looking at the numbers for the guy they’re calling up, Matt Joyce, he doesn’t look so bad. Detroit surely won’t try to trade for someone unless he flops.

by xanthan on May 5, 2008 1:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Joyce might be alright for right now

but Leyland, et al is going to want a veteran with veteran savvy down the stretch and that is Randy Winn all the way. They don’t have much a farm system left, but we wouldn’t get a high caliber prospect for Winn anyway. Jeff Larish might be asking too much, but if they intend on keeping Miguel Cabrera at first base, he might be available.

Bonds stands alone.

Winn has a full NTC to all Central Division teams.

So, I don’t know if he’d accept a trade to Detroit. Besides, who could we get from Detroit that’d really be of any value to us?

Proud adoptive parent of Tim Alderson.

by JT Jordan on May 5, 2008 8:22 PM PDT up reply actions

If I was Randy, I’d jump at the chance to play for a playoff team, but that’s just me.

I think it’s less about getting a prospect back than it is clearing roster space along with a little payroll.

by xanthan on May 5, 2008 8:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Randy grew up in the Bay, as did his wife. I don’t see why he’d be particularly open to going to Detroit if he’s made it clear that he’s not interested in going to a central division team.

It’s possible, but I don’t see it happening.

Proud adoptive parent of Tim Alderson.

by JT Jordan on May 5, 2008 8:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, I guess it depends on how much he values playing close to home, which I think might be overstated for some but not all players. Plus, a move to Detroit would only be for the rest of this year and next year.
