Brief interviews with Grizzly Men

Sunday I was in Fresno as working media for the first of what I hope to be monthly trips to the Central Valley. BruteSentiment sent me. I went in with a notebook full of questions and a head full of dreams. Well, not really, but I did speak to several Grizzlies and get the goods on things we McCoven want to know.

Catcher situation: Todd Jennings is on the DL in Fresno and the word is the leg injury could be problematic. Dayton Buller is the starter (for now) and Barry Gunther isn’t expected to stick around for more than a few days, just based on his history with the organization. Gunther played for five different teams in the system last year. Also nobody knows what happened to Guillermo Rodriguez. It’s like he fell off the face of the earth.

Moar on this is in the new edition of the Fresno Report at SF Dugout. Hint.

Omar: Omar Vizquel gave a group interview Sunday after batting practice. I got in on it. Omar likes to talk, which is great. Makes our jobs a lot easier. I won't use the quotes the others in the interview got, but I think it's okay to mention how subdued Omar was during the interview. I think he knows he's almost done. He spoke of pushing himself too hard and that's why the recovery took longer than he expected. I believe he will be back at some point this season but the end is coming up soon for him. He had some praise for Manny Burriss too, specifics I can't recall at the moment as the quote is on my tape and I'm at work, and still really GD tired from working all day yesterday on top of the 3 hour drive to and from Fresno.

Hinshaw and Espineli: The two lefties in the Fresno bullpen, Geno Espineli and Alex Hinshaw, are throwing well, though neither was needed Sunday. I like these two guys because they give good interviews. They're smart and sharp, and Hinshaw is a pretty cool dude. He told me about the tattoo he has on his forearm: his mom's name in Farsi. I want to see them both succeed in SF.

Nate's speed: Nate Schierholtz downplayed his speed on the basepaths when I spoke to him. I know we're all OMG NATE CAN RUN AND TAKE WALKS here, so I wanted to get what he had to say about it. He did mention the walks as a good thing, though. Again, the quotes are a lot more specific but I don't have 'em here and I can't recall exactly what he said.

Though you can read all this coming up this week on the weekly interview piece on SF Dugout. Hint again.

Pereira's performance: Nick P benefitted from a wide strike zone Sunday to pitch that masterpiece 11 K performance. I like Nick P and I want him to succeed but yeah that strike zone was really wide even to a blind old bat like me. I like that he went 8 innings though, as he's never been known to go deep into games as much.

Dancing eyeball: It was Parker's birthday Sunday and he hosted a bunch of other mascots for antics, hijinks, and other things. Gigante from SJ was in the house, as was a dancing eyeball. It was pretty weird, especially when the eyeball looked like it was trying to mosh with the other mascots.

So I had a future Hall of Famer, a dancing eyeball, lefty relievers, a great pitching performance, and a scoop on an injury. Not a bad day at the office.

I'm due again in Fresno in June. Next time I go I hope to say hey to the Fresno McCoven there, if I can get away from work work work that is.

Re. the eyeball: Instead of a sausage race, the Grizzlies have an eyeball race at certain games. I was disappointed to find no Residents connection.

Re. Omar: I love him also so much. I hope he’s back up here real soon.

And yes I punned on the David Foster Wallace title. The book Brief Interviews with Hideous Men is a funny read. I hope Brute will let me run the interview article with said title.

Fresno Bee interview talks about Omar being subdued, and wanting to set the mark for most hits and games by a shortstop. It does come across as if he realizes the end is near, but then he would almost have to be realistic considering his age and the injury. From the article, it sounds like Omar expects to be back with SF within the next couple of weeks. As for Nate, I’m just a mite concerned about his bat speed this year. He doesn’t seem as crisp as in the past. I hope it’s my old eyes and not decline.

by grizzled on May 5, 2008 9:35 AM PDT reply actions

Ya I met the dude working the game for the Bee out there. He and the TV crew got most of the questions in while I just wanted to hear Omar’s take on Manny B.

BFF, what is the scoop on Sir Alexander Hinshaw? Is this kid the next big thing? Apparently he is healthy and dealing. Got his fifth save this afternoon. If he is better than Erick Threets then possibly Threets becomes trade bait?

In my experience

Parallels runs XP as fast on an Intel Mac as it does on on Win box. Especially if you are using an HP system ( ducks ). My Parallels setup is a 1.8 ghz Core 2 Duo Mac Mini that I picked up very cheap. I also have an IBM Thinkpad T61 for work, an “old” upgraded G4 Digital Audio desktop, a couple of overclocked Intel P4’s, and some overclocked Blue and White G3’s laying around. Yes, sadly I am a “Geek” and a Giants Fan.

Here is a good of video of Parallels running XP on a 2Ghz MacBook Pro , with some helpful information in the comments as well.

Neato. I used to know dudes who were hardcore into computers and that. One of them built my desktop systems from the ground up for me. We would go to Fry’s and pick out the parts and then he would build it. So I kind of get the gist of all this tech talk even if I don’t know exactly what’s going on in there.

Of course I want to remain cost effective when I buy my new laptop, but I want to have something that will last a good while too. Making a lousy salary out of college as I’ll be I won’t have cash money to throw around. I like the ability to pick exactly what goes into my machine too. I bought a Dell two years ago and tweaked it to exactly what I wanted and needed. It’s still keepin’ on. The only problems I have with it are the less than stellar display (can be dim at times) and its absolute refusal to connect to some wireless networks.

Yeah, my older daughter (math nerd) is at Vanderbilt for Civil Engineering. They force you to buy a Dell Latitude laptop as part of their "course requirements" to use their modeling software on the U server. Of course, they "help" you out by just adding it on to your student loan package, so you get to overpay for the hardware and the loan interest :-)
She suffers from the same problems as you do with the wireless connections and display. It is a home "help desk" exercise every time she comes home on break.

I’d go with Ubuntu. “Hardy Heron” is out. Haven’t used it yet, but the reviews are stellar.

My adopted son Matt Downs. Bill Mueller without the two-flap helmet .

Lunker

This is Hinshaw’s first year as closer, but he already got the act down pat.

First he runs in from the bullpen (not quite Lefferts-like, but close) and climbs on the mound with a scowl on his face. (His theme music is Jimi’s version of All Along the Watchtower.) Then comes this exaggerated windup (at 6-4 and no more than 190, he’s mostly arms and legs) and the ball comes at the batter at these crazy angles. Mostly fastballs (90-92) and a pretty nasty slider. Pinpoint control with both. He was lights out on this homestand (4 ip, 0 runs, 4 saves) against two pretty good hitting AAA teams.

Not sure he’s a big-league closer, but there’s no reason (other than health) why he can’t be a late-innings lefty a la Taschner.

Giants win the pennant ... in 2012!!

I was disappointed I didn’t see Hinshaw throw Sunday. I can’t really see the affable guy I spoke to going all GRRRRR on the mound, but it’s the closer act. And the guy has five saves now.

"While conservatives tell you 'leave things alone and no one will lose,' and liberals tell you 'interfere a lot and no one will lose,' baseball says 'someone will lose.' Not only says it - but insists upon it! ... Democracy is lovely, but baseball's more mature." BVCE supports SF Dugout and Manny Burriss.

According to the Chronicle’s article on Steve Holm this morning , G-Rod is sitting out due to post-concussion syndrome.

I have set Dave Roberts free; if he comes back, it was meant to be.

dylan

i can’t think of any Dylan song besides Jimi’s “watchtower” that would work for a closer entrance. Maaaaybe the last instrumental part of Tangled up in Blue
