Stud or Pussy

If the Enchanter is everything we think he is, throwing 122 pitches in a game shouldn’t phase him. He’s just been wild since then. Look back at how many pitches guys like Marichal and Perry threw. It’s ridiculous to think no one in this generation is capable of the same.

by NearestNorwich on May 4, 2008 12:30 PM PDT up reply actions

the game is not the same as when Marichal and Perry threw.

and Lincecum might someday be capable of that, but you don’t need to try to wring everything you can out of his arm when he’s only 23.

Understood

Take today’s game out of the discussion, though, and this high-stress innings issue is a bigger, Rags issue. Cain has had the same problem this year (and last year at times). The starters throw way too many pitches, and I wonder whether some of that isn’t on the pitching coach.

Seriously.

If we all had 11 fingers, most of us would be fine with this decision. Tendons don’t care about the base-10 system.

There’s nothing magic about 100 pitches. It can be a handy benchmark, but that’s all. If Lincecum has another taxing inning and Bochy still keeps him out there, I’ll rail along with y’all.

by Grant Brisbee on May 4, 2008 12:33 PM PDT reply actions

It’s because he’s been struggling with command all day and just came off an EXTREMELY stressful and ineffective inning.

I agree...

...but except for ‘90s Maddux and turn-of-the-century Pedro, almost every pitcher will have at least one or more stress innings in every start. I don’t think having a stress inning around 90/100 pitches merits an automatic removal for a young pitcher. I know I’m in the minority on this one.

by Grant Brisbee on May 4, 2008 12:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, it’s just been a stressful game all around and it felt like he was lucky to get out of the last one with only 2 runs allowed. I felt like he was losing effectiveness, judging by his wildness in the last inning and that meant it was a good time to take him out.

Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.

by Grant Brisbee on May 4, 2008 12:42 PM PDT up reply actions

I guess it’s not too bad since he got the inning done quickly, I just feel like the Giants could do a better job of babying their young arms. Sometimes I feel like they try to get too much out of them, especially in a year where we’re not going to compete for anything.

KOTOR II is not as good as KOTOR I. Granted, some of the controls are better, and there is more stuff, including being able to make upgrade parts and having more saber crystals, but unlike KOTOR, the story is stunted and thrown together in II.

They had to throw it together for the Christmas season. Still very fun though.

by thehavenot on May 4, 2008 12:57 PM PDT up reply actions

My "favorite"

The HK-50 droids are really important early in the story, and then they just go away. No explanation. Just gone.

Plus, some of the characters are just useless. You can use them, but there isn’t really any reason to.

by North Side Chicago Expatriate Giants Fan on May 4, 2008 1:00 PM PDT up reply actions

And Canderous, the best and most badass character in I, wears a mask the whole game in II.

I was so disappointed when I heard that. IDK if he actually has a substantial part or not though.

Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.

by jponry on May 4, 2008 1:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Canderous is tough in II, but he is one of the characters I really had to force myself to use. Granted, I usually don’t go to his planet early in the game, so I already have other characters I think are better for the team.

by North Side Chicago Expatriate Giants Fan on May 4, 2008 1:05 PM PDT up reply actions

I liked to use him and Carth in I and they’d start arguing with each other all the time. It was hilarious.

Castillo lines a 1-2 pitch the other way

Rowand scores from first on a play at the plate. He slides on his belly and hurts his hurt ribs

Opposite field double for Castillo

Bobbled by the defender, Rowand lumbers around third and bellyflops (more than a slide, it was a bellyflop) toward the the plate in a really close play at the plate.

Rowand slow to get up. But he does.

1. Castillo rips Double
2. Jenkins takes the light rail to get to it (i.e. takes a long time and kinda stands around for a while)
3. Flannery sends Rowand home
4. Rowand dives past Ruiz and touches the plate, but lands right on injured ribs

They’ve always had trouble in this ballpark. So to win one game and actually come close to sweeping the series isn’t too bad an outcome.

I hope Bochy doesn’t let the infield have tomorrow off, though. They need to practice fielding the ball.

Friday the bullpen gives it up. Saturday a comeback win. Sunday the defense is horrible and some late bullpen lapses. Got to play better my friends.

I think they are giving Yabu too much of a pass on the two walks.

by NearestNorwich on May 4, 2008 2:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Kruk was a pitcher so he definitely wants the play made behind him. Kuip was a solid glove 2b and knows at the very least that ball must be kept in the infield.

I know why they look at it that way - and it’s hard to quibble - but god do I hate relievers walking guys into scoring position, particularly guys mired in Bocockesque slumps.

that play happened just as I was leaving work. I thought of about 100 ways to kill Velez on the way home, but now that I’m calmed down, I think the solution is to use Burriss as a defensive replacement at second when Omar gets back. I don’t want to give up on Eugenio and spend the rest of my season watching Ray Durham. It’s a shame we wasted Aurilia’s day though. It sort of reminded me of that game where Babe Ruth hit three homeruns one month before he was released by the Boston Braves.

except, you know, the Braves actually released Ruth. I’m starting to think that Sabean won’t DFA or outright release Aurilia this season.
