MLB, marketing geniuses

From the people who brought you World Series with only night games and a structure that now permits teams to have evening starts for Saturday games throughout the summer -- both moves guaranteeing that young fans don't develop into lifelong baseball fans -- we now have a Memorial Day with... nothing.  I think I remember that Memorial Day has always had a triple-header on ESPN or a national game carried by MLB's broadcast partner.  Am I mistaken?  Why would MLB schedule so few games on Memorial Day?

Question:  What is your least favorite thing about how MLB or even individual teams relate to their customers?

I personally find it unforgiveable to schedule evening games on Saturdays all through the summer (I have a 2 1/2 year old son who I take to weekend games, but cannot if they start at 6)... and this wasn't made totally clear before I bought my season tix.  I also find it unpleasant that there was no baseball today (other than a Cubs game on WGN, which I don't care about).

Not having every team in the Majors playing a game on Memorial Day is a pretty egregious error (oversight?) in my opinion. Just plain stupid.

You are nicer than I am. There is no way it’s an oversight. It’s a choice, and I agree it’s a stupid one.

I was pretty surprised and disappointed

None of the three teams I follow- the Giants, A’s, and Padres- were playing.

Memorial Day Baseball

I remember when ALL times would play and sometimes would have a doubleheader scheduled for this weekend. Maybe some teams can play summer day games – like SF – but they can be killer in places like Hotlanta, St Louis, Miami etc.

Agreed re locations where weather doesn't permit it

although in 1977, I saw a game on a hot Saturday afternoon in St. Louis and everyone survived. Anecdotes aside, though, there is no reason San Francisco Giants games should start at 6 on all Saturday home games through the summer except, I think, one. Grrr.

so many choices

I’ll vote for the zealous prevention of any mlb clips on youtube. I understand the notion that you want to protect your product from theft, but since they’re not selling it, why not let us see it. I’d buy the Rod Beck game (no, it’s not the Brian Johnson game), but they won’t either sell it or let me see it online. And another thing, these kids today with their baggy pants and their rap music…

baggy pants arent really “in” anymore.. rap music doesnt really exist anymore either, its called hip hop now

by Azmanz on May 27, 2008 5:59 PM PDT up reply actions

put the doobie down, bro!

Rap is now called hip hop? Really?!? That’s news to me.

Something tells me that your a fan of neither genre, as that generalization is the furthest thing from the truth.

Rap is that shit that has found a home on commercial radio and MTV. Rap is all about bling, blingin’ it and smacking bitches and hoes because it gives you more of a “street cred”. Rap has zero substance to it and is so full of posers that it’s next to impossible to keep track of who’s hot and who’s not.

Hip hop is about a lifestyle. Fashion, DJ’s, graffiti, spoken word, B-boys and B-girls….from Grandmaster Flash to Heavy D…from A Tribe Called Quest to The Roots. These are artists with groundbreaking talent. This is the stuff that’s the furthest from being a flash in the pan.

‘sides, the only stuff out there worth my money is alternative hip-hop anyway. The mainstream stuff is beyond awful.

it's an easy shot, but...

the blackout rules on MLB.TV. I could maybe kind of sort of possibly forgive blackouts of home game, but not away games. It’s perverse that the only time I can watch Giants games live online is when I’m traveling on the road.

by non sequitur on May 27, 2008 1:08 AM PDT reply actions

Ok, I’m not hinged to baseball like most on the McC so WHY is it bad to have an all night game World Series? To me it seems like its better to allow more people to come home and watch the dang game (kids included). Kinda similar to basketball playoffs, etc. And is a Saturday night game a sin? I’m sure there’s plenty o’ reasons but I ain’t thinkin’ right now. What’s the deal?

And my vote for stupid MLB sh*t: the slap on the wrist, turn a blind eye, steroid policy.

Night WS games. Well, they start at 5 on the west coast. Not bad. If you’re an east coast baseball fan, the game starts at 8 and ends at 11:30, or later if it goes long. That in itself is harmful that people have to stay up that late. Also, kids are in bed at 9, or 10 and they can’t stay up as late.

Right, and what's worse...

... the games don’t actually start at 5 p.m. PST, but more like 5:35 p.m. PST/8:35 p.m. EST. So the games on the east coast NEVER end until after 11:35 p.m., which is obviously no way to develop a young fan base.

Likewise Saturday night games. Weekend day games are when parents can take little kids to the games (older kids can attend just fine). That’s how to develop a fan base for the future.

...but as a child, who among us did not take the little portable AM radio and hide it under your pillow ? That’s what baseball fans do.

The regular season Saturday night games is just plain stupid, as is the fact that there were very few Memorial Day games this year. Only eleven of the thirty teams played :-(

Don’t get me wrong, I lived back in the age the “cassete tape.” I just thought it was funny.

Cell phones don’t actually have AM radio, anyway. For some reason they still only come with FM radio tuners. Them and mp3 players. Man, if there was an mp3 player that tuned into am radio and didn’t suck at everything else or was an iPod, I’d buy it.

I’ve said several times that I actually enjoy the Saturday night 6:05 starts. My reasons: 1) I no longer write game recaps so it doesn’t bother me. The 6:05 start did bother me when I did the recaps because it meant my whole Saturday was shot. B) It gets the Giants away from the asinine FUX broadcasts so if I can’t make it out to a Saturday night game, I can still enjoy it on television with our regular broadcasters. Your mileage may vary, of course.

However, not having baseball on Memorial Day…now that’s just downright un-American.

"While conservatives tell you 'leave things alone and no one will lose,' and liberals tell you 'interfere a lot and no one will lose,' baseball says 'someone will lose.' that's why we have the sat night games

because MLB bends over for Fox routinely.

I don’t get why FOX ever managed to get the World Series. Oh here’s why, FOX offered MLB the most money. MLB didn’t give two shits about the quality of the broadcast they would be getting.

Here’s what really blows: Fox has Saturday afternoon baseball and they’ve managed to get a deal that says that other teams, even those NOT being covered by a fox broadcast, can’t show a game on local tv during the time the fox game is on. I’m not sure if this same deal exists for ESPN national games, but I doubt it. Certainly not on like Wednesday nights. So Fox basically decides what game you will watch on saturday, so even if it’s not the game you want, you end up watching it anyway because it’s the only game on. Frankly, it’s good when the team moves the game out of the fox slot, so it can be on tv.

Fixed that for you :-) I will not watch/listen to Fox Baseball Coverage . The rare exception is if the Giants are on, and then I’ll turn off the sound and listen to the radio. Kind of rough when Miller is calling a play that hasn’t happened yet though. Jack “Suck” and Shut Up Tim McCarver are just too much to put up with.
