BP breaks down top 12 picks
The Giants are always a difficult team to project as they play their hand very close to the vest, both in their dealings with the media and with the scouting industry as a whole. They filled the system with young long-term talent in last year’s draft, and might feel some pressure to find something that provides less risk and a quicker turnaround with such a high pick. The top college bat available at this point is likely South Carolina first baseman Justin Smoak, but Gordon Beckham could find himself in the mix if the Giants are one of the teams that believe he can stay at shortstop; other teams are about 50/50 on that proposition. There are some wacky rumors about the Giants going totally off the board and taking an up-the-middle college player that is not Gordon Beckham, somebody that nobody else has in their first-round mix, but there are always a few wacky rumors around, and it’s difficult to sort out the few that have basis in fact.
I really hope this stays a wacky rumor

“I really hope this stays a wacky rumor”
I second that notion.
I hope the Giants cave into the pressure and go for the “less risky” Justin Smoak. If the rumor is true, and the player is in NOBODYS 1st rd mix, then why waste a Fifth overall pick on him? Wait till the second or supplemental round.
That is, unless the Giants have a crystal ball that tells them that this mystery player will be the perfect mix between Bonds, Mays, Ruth, Williams, and Dimaggio…all at the shortstop position! In that case, go for it.

Jemile Weeks?
University of Miami 2b and brother of Richie Weeks. Jemile Weeks is a switch-hitter who has the best bat speed on the team from either side of the plate … Has deceptive power with great hitting ability and speed .

nawww
Weeks is considered a 1st rounder by a majority of teams
I went through baseball america’s top 100 draft prospects lists and I came up with these possibilities:
Dennis Raben, Jordy Mercer, Ryan Flaherty, and Jordan Danks
all HUGE over-drafts if they were to be picked at 5
waiting for 2011....

We need pitching
Look, we never draft pitching and being that our team lacks pitching and has an abundance of hitting, we better draft a pitcher.

Brian Sabean is NOT taking an unknown at number five. He doesn’t have the job security to draft someone who isn’t a lock choice to become a star. All he needs the day after the draft is for the new guy running the Giants to read 25 news stories and 100 different media sites calling his GM an idiot.

Kind of begs the question
Would the Giants pissing the bed on this draft pick be worth it if it got Sabean fired?
I’d be inclined to say “yes”...

Don’t they do that already?
