Angel Joseph
As it has been reported before the Giants were unable to sign Angel Joseph, a promising young latino player, because of a paperwork dispute. This article from today's NY Times states that the Giants did tender an offer but it was never consumated because Angel was unable to obtain a birth certificate.
Angel's parents were born in Haiti and had immigrated to the Dominican Republic to work in the sugar cane fields. Apprently there is a crackdown by the Dominican government on Haitian immigrants including on their children even when they are born in the DR like Angel.

IMO
IMO the Giants should have gotten behind this kid, paid his legal fees to get this thing straightened out and brought any and all political pressure to bear that they could. Former Giant Juan Marichal is involved in the Dominican government at some (albeit likely mostly ceremonial) level.
For this kid’s sake I hope this mess gets straightened out. I don’t think this Angel, unlike the other, was considered to be a GREAT prospect. But he does seem to be a great CAUSE. I hope the Giants help this kid overcome and that he becomes an important player for them.
And I REALLY feel sorry for the guy who can’t join his wife in Florida. Are people just determined to be evil?
I agree. It’s pathetic that the Giants just gave up in the face of an obvious injustice. Surely MLB has enough leverage in the Dominican to do something about this.
I'm sorry
But why? Just because this kid might have signed with an American team? I obviously agree that it’s a sad story and that this law is unfair, but just because the boy can swing a bat it doesn’t mean MLB has any right (or duty) to do anything about it.
..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.
Agreed.
Your point is correct, of course. Only if the Giants have a heart or if they think they can get value from Joseph (or some combination of the two) should they even bother.
third possibility
they have no heart and see no value in Joseph, but see value in the perception that they care
Pedro Feliz would look great in Dodger Blue.
What’s sad is how Haitian immigrants are being treated in the DR. Or the 80% poverty rate in Haiti that leaves many people with no choice but to immigrate to the DR, legally or illegally. My point is that this is a complicated problem, and that I don’t think MLB has any right to use it’s leverage in the Dominican to do something about it.
Believe it or not, Roger, but you don’t have to be the Tin Man in order to believe that MLB needs to stay out of this. Don’t try to make it look as if it just comes down to how big your heart is.

My feeling
It is my feeling that one should fight discrimination when he has the opportunity. The Giants have that opportunity. No real need to get involved with the Nazis and Jews, either.
So what?
Other country’s immigration policies and citizenship laws are their own business.
Fred Lewis can stand under my umbrella.
True
What you say is true. It is also incredibly callous and uncaring.
Surprised you had the strength
to type all that. What with your heart bleeding and all.
Much bigger problems in the world than this. Like malnutrition or access to clean drinking water or disease eradication. Just curious but what when was the last time you cut a check to address any of those problems?
And just for the record, you’re right. I don’t care.

You are right
You are right that the world has bigger problems, and you may even be right that you don’t care. But that doesn’t mean a wrong isn’t worth righting.
I am typing this quickly, lest I bleed to death before I finish it.
im not sure where the wrong is here....
just because this guy can play baseball and some dimwit reporter wants to blather on about
injustice everywhere….- its funny that they want to call this racism too -light skinned caribs vs. dark-skinned caribs? – no, just another country tired of being invaded….
I would like to point out that even though I said MLB should stay out of this, I do not support any of what slojoe just said.
slojoe – did you read the article? Angel’s parents are immigrated to the DR 30 years ago and Angel was born in the DR, which makes him entitled to a full citizenship according to the Dominican laws at the time. The law was changed in 2004, then applied retroactively to people born before that, which is illegal. I don’t see how you can support this.
..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.
i just dont care - do you get it??
tired of being flooded by illegals with made up sob stories….sounds like people of DR are tired of it also
life is tough all over – its not fair, so deal with it….
Incredibly sad story. You’d think there’d be a way to work this out, perhaps by just signing him to a reduced bonus with the promise to get the full amount when/if the birth date paperwork comes through.
Not only that, but maybe they could determine his age some other way. How old does the school system - or his employer - think he is?
They could cut off his leg, count the number of rings, and then reattatch the leg.

I thought this was about Joe Angel.
Notgardo, I still love you -- but you're grounded. No Guitar Hero for a month, no Cheez-Its for two months, and NO BASEBALL! This hurts me as much as it hurts you.
lol I love you.

I heard the Giants rescinded the offer when they went down there and heard two teenagers call Angel “grandpa.”

It is said that Casey Stengel’s wife almost didn’t marry him when she read in the papers about “old Casey” and thought he might be lying about his age.
