Around SBN: Jim Irsay: We Can Make It Work With Peyton Manning

minor lines, 5/21/08

AAA: Fresno hosting Salt Lake was postponed due to a power outage
(The game was rescheduled as part of a doubleheader July 19th.)

AA: Connecticut lost to Binghamton 2-1

Connecticut: CF Antoan Richardson: 0 for 2, 2 BB, SO
Connecticut: LF Eddy Martinez-Esteve: 0 for 2, 2 BB, E
Connecticut: PH Kyle Haines: 1 for 1
Binghamton: 3B Dan Murphy: 2 for 3, BB, SB

Connecticut: RHP Joe Martinez: 5.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
Connecticut: RHP Kelvin Pichardo: 2.0 IP, 2 K
Connecticut: RHP Sergio Romo: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB
Binghamton: LHP Jon Niese: 5.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 5 K
Binghamton: RHP Eddie Kunz: 1.1 IP, 1 K

Richardson and EME were the only two Defenders to reach base twice, improving their OBPs to .348 and .377, respectively.  EME's OBP leads the team (minimum 70 AB).  Haines continues to play very well in a part time role, batting .333/.413/.424 through 66 AB.  The Mets' 23-year-old Murphy, a 13th round pick in 2006, has reached base in seven of nine trips to the plate in this series.  He is off to a strong start this year, hitting .335/.377/.486.

Martinez has not allowed more than 3 ER in any start this year, but he has also averaged just barely over 5.0 IP per start.  That trend continues.  He had a 9/2 GO/FO line to improve his GO/AO ratio to 2.44.  Pichardo pitched two perfect innings, his best appearance of the year statistically.  Romo made his second appearance since coming off the DL.  Niese and Kunz, who recorded his 10th save, are perhaps the Mets top two pitching prospects.  They improved their respective ERAs to 3.88 and 2.70.

A+: San Jose lost to Modesto 4-3

San Jose: 2B Matt Downs: 2 for 4, 2B, SO
San Jose: DH Andy D'Alessio: 2 for 4, 2 SO

San Jose: LHP Clayton Tanner: 3.1 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K
San Jose: RHP Juan Trinidad: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 K
Modesto: RHP Esmil Rogers: 7.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K

Downs and D'Alessio each had two of the Giants' seven hits, improving their respective AVGs to .283 and .324.  Even with his .324 AVG, D'Allessio continues to have barely more hits than strikeouts (48 H and 47 SO among 148 AB).

Tanner had a relatively short and ineffective start, raising his ERA above 5.00.  On the more positive side, he struck out five of nineteen batters faced, and the 5 K was his second best mark this year in that category.  Trinidad, who spent most of last season the closer at Augusta, was the first of four relievers out of the bullpen, and two scoreless innings (although he did allow an inherited runner to score while neither of his bequeathed runners scored) lowered his ERA to 2.16.  The Rockies' 22-year-old Rogers was much more effective than in his previous start, when he allowed 8 ER in 4.0 IP six days earlier in San Jose.  His best two start of the year have been at home against the Giants.

A-: Augusta defeated Savannah 2-1
(with all three runs scored in the 6th inning)

Augusta: DH Angel Villalona: 2 for 3, 2B, SO

Augusta: RHP Daryl Maday: 6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 8 K
Augusta: RHP Danny Otero: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 K

Villalona was the only hitter in the game with multiple hits, and his 11th double was the game's only XBH.  He has hit .359 over his last ten games to raise his AVG to .242.  He also has nearly half of his XBHs (8 of 17) during that time.

Making his third start after nine relief appearances to begin the season, Maday had his best start yet, including a season high 8 K.  With the GreenJackets, he now has 28 H, 6 BB and 42 K in 39.2 IP with a 2.04 ERA.  Otero made his 17th appearance and picked up his 11th save.  Over his last ten appearances, he has 10 H, 0 BB, 0 R and 14 K in 12.1 IP with 9 saves.

Power outage in Fresno? There was a big power outage in the East Bay yesterday too. Are we getting ready for roving blackouts again?

If a power outage postponed the SJ game...

shouldn’t the big-league club’s entire season be postponed, too? Ba-dum-bump.

Can D'Alessio start to be considered a real prospect?

He has hit everywhere and with power. Sure he strikes out a lot but he seems like he can kinda take a walk. Jesus we have a lot of 1b now.

I loved him after his great debut last year (even if he was old for the league) but I’m a little worried about his K% numbers. Especially for a “college hitter” that should be a little bit more advanced.

His K% right now is at 29% which leads the Cal League. I’ll see if I can find league averages for the Cal League sometime today to compare Andy to.

by xanthan on May 22, 2008 8:59 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, I don’t think his performance thus far has been encouraging at all. He’s 23, he’s limited to the least-challenging position on the field, and he’s on a 200k/700pa pace in the California League. That’s a lot of red flags.

Matt Downs is looking pretty good, though.

i have hope

Age is overrated, it’s not like he’s 25 or 26, and he’s got a really pretty OPS and some legit power.

He does need to learn some (a lot of) plate discipline tho.

by Viliphied on May 22, 2008 9:18 AM PDT up reply actions

People keep saying age is overrated, but no one ever bothers to present any evidence about it. I’ll just say that you’re not going to find many 23-year-olds in the annals of the California League that went on to do much in the majors. Fred Lewis is the best one I can think of, actually.

As for D’Alessio’s power, he’s currently tied for 18th in the league in home runs.

by Evan on May 22, 2008 10:01 AM PDT up reply actions

Last winter I put up a post that looked at every major league starter in ‘07 and their average ages upon reaching the majors. I don’t have the numbers anymore, but it must be somewhere in the archives. Long story short: people who weren’t in the majors by the age of 23 saw a dramatic and rapid decline in potential for ever becoming major league starters. The only group for whom this wasn’t true was Catchers. I was going to go back and do another look at pitchers but never got around to it. Fred Lewis is looking like a real anomaly. But there were a couple like him—Dan Uggla and Melvin Mora being two who leap to mind.

My boy ain't fat, he's just big boned. Big bat, too.

Anvil this month

.275/.324/.565 5 homeruns 13 rbis
He still needs to improve his walk/strikeout ratio but at least he’s improving

by superk1ng on May 22, 2008 8:58 AM PDT reply actions

I thought about noting that he has no walks in his last ten games, but I really didn’t want to go down that road again. Over his last five games or so, the strikeouts are down for AnVil, but over the last ten they are not, so I am not sure how much to make of any trend in that regard yet.

His eye has been MUCH better. (Augusta game listener). He’s also just crushing anything in the zone.

Bush League

Connecticut did not play Take Me Out To The Ballgame on Wednesday’s game.

First time I’ve ever seen that, from the bigs to Little League.

Ugh.

Game itself wasn’t bad…a close play at the plate was the difference.

Boggle

How does a team, playing any sort of baseball, NOT play Take Me Out to the Ballgame? We suffer through God Bless America, Sweet Caroline at SJ Giants games (I’m not even kidding) and other songs that need to GTFO, but what is this world coming to when there’s no Take Me Out to the Ballgame?

Blasphemy.

Speaking of Connecticut...

How much longer are EME and Ishikawa gonna be stuck playing there? Both of them play great on the road, but put up miserable numbers at home. I’d like to see what they could do in Fresno in a hitting environment that is not poison.

Plus, I like the fact that Ishikawa has really cut down his K’s and increased his walks. I am not saying that EME or Ishikawa will develop into anything, but I think it is time to give them the AAA challenge.

OT

But doesn’t it suck that quite possibly our coolest minor league hat has to be that of a team where our prospects go to die?

I prefer my SJ hat over the other teams’ lids.

I saw SJ Bees caps when I was there in April; they were not there when I went back a few weeks ago. Boo.

Personally my favorite cap/logo is for the now defunct Swing of the Quad Cities: a saxophone with a baseball coming out of the bell: http://mlb.imageg.net/graphics/product_images/pMLB2-2000969dt.jpg

Now the team is called the Quad City River Bandits. I am not pleased.

Cool logo, unfortunate hat color.

I still like the Montgomery Biscuits logo the best! I kinda like the new Grizzlies logo but I agree with SoFa King Mike, SJ’s logo is sharp and probably my favorite Giants minor league logo.

by xanthan on May 22, 2008 1:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah the powder blue doesn’t win me over. Which is why I didn’t buy one of those hats. Put it on a navy blue hat however and I’m in.

SJ’s caps are very sharp; classic, clean, simple.
