A Bengie Molina ground rule double -  as Bengie laboriously lumbers out of the batters box he smiles thankfully as the ump waves him all the way to second base.

Old Guys On the DL -  Or O GOD Please... Roberts, Durham, Aurilia and company out, Lewis, Velez, Bowker and gang in.

Worst Record in Baseball in 2008 -  "With the first pick of the 2009 Amatuer Draft the Giants select... Stephen Strasburg, San Diego State University " (or someone else really good).

Strasburg

Tons of hype around him for being over a year away. Although it would be nice to have a bay area team with the #1 overall pick in a non-Smith (Alex and Joe) draft.

Right, it's still a long way off

A lot can happen between now and then. The Giants may not even “earn” the first pick. But the way things look now, they are a pretty good bet for another pick in the first five. The only team with a worse record today is San Diego, and I don’t see the Padres being worse than the Giants when all is said and done.
There is a lot of hype around Strasburg, much of it merited. He is being compared to Prior as the most dominant college pitcher in recent memory. But this season could be his career year, he could blow out his arm, or someone totally unexpected could appear on the scene, a la Posey or G. Beckham, to supplant him as the pre-draft favorite to go #1.
In any case, just having the chance to bolster the minor league system with a very early pick will soften the blow of a very bad season.

We’re looking pretty good for the Strasburg lottery. A lot of the teams I expected to “contend” with us have gotten off to strong starts—O’s, ‘Stros, Marlins, even the Royals. I think our only real competition will come from the Nationals and the Mariners.

How can we be thinking 2009 draft when 2008 draft has yet to happen?

2008 Draft beginning to take some shape

With the draft just weeks away it seems to be taking some shape. The Rays have the first selection and have seemed to narrow their choice down to two players – Beckham and Posey. Picking second the Pirates will attempt to right their ship with the choice of Pedro Alvarez. MLB.com Kansas City beat writer believes the Royals have narrowed the third selection to either Alvarez or Justin Smoak. The Baltimore Orioles have the fourth pick and both Jim Callis of BA and Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com believe the Birds will go with LHP Brian Matusz.

This leaves our beloved SF Giants the choice of:

  • Buster Posey C
  • Tim Beckham SS
  • Eric Hosmer 1b
  • Gordon Beckham SS
  • Aaron Crow RHP
  • Yonder Alonso 1b

We can talk about it...

because we love baseball, we root for the Giants, and we dream of better things in the future. Heck, I’d discuss the 2010 draft if I knew anything intelligent about it.

And, to no one’s surprise, I still want Gordon Beckham.

Start thinking about 09....we started a long time ago

Grant started dreaming about the 09 draft on April 2 when he mused about picking Robert Stock. I’m with Lyle, are there any interesting 14 year olds playing in the Dominican we can start dreaming about.

Gotta think about the future...

The present is just so depressing.

To wilriv’s list I would also add:
. Kyle Skipworth C

In a worst case scenario, the best hitters fly off the board early:
Rays – T. Beckham
Pirates – Smoak
Royals – Alvarez
Orioles – Hosmer (Might also take G. Beckham)

That would still leave the Giants with Skipworth, whom John Sickels ranks as his 3rd best prospect after Posey and Tim B. If Hosmer is available, I would pay the price, and maybe give him a shot in LF – he’ll have at least a couple of years to work on his fielding.
So at number 5 the Giants are virtually guaranteed an elite hitting prospect.

Just imagine a number 1 or 2 pick in 2009. They would have a lock on either the best arm or bat in the draft class.

Yonder Alonso

Someone is going to be very fortunate to draft Yonder Alonso. Alonso is to the 2008 draft what LaPorta was to the 2007 draft. The consensus was LaPorta was an overdraft at #7 yet the Brewers selected him. The Brewers definitely have a track record of selecting quality hitters. The brother is raking at AA already. Go ahead Sabes don’t be shy to grab a professional hitter who is a run producer.

I'm with you on the Alonso Bandwagon.

Although Tim Beckham would be nice, too.

Plus, think of the potential nicknames!

"While conservatives tell you 'leave things alone and no one will lose,' and liberals tell you 'interfere a lot and no one will lose,' baseball says 'someone will lose.' Not only says it - but insists upon it! ... Democracy is lovely, but baseball's more mature." BVCE supports SF Dugout and Manny Burriss.

Hit it yonder, Alonso!

According to Keith Law,

Giants might take gasp another pitcher this year if Smoak is the best position player available, to prevent Villalona being blocked. So as much as I like Smoak, hope someone else takes him first.

There is speculation though, that the Giants (or any team who takes Smoak) may try to convert him to LF.

I don’t have the link, but I read it on MLB Trade Rumors.

Please find the link if possible- I’d be really interested in seeing that.

It was Jim Callis who said it,

Which is why I couldn’t find it again. Here it is.

Giants May Draft A Pitcher With Fifth Pick
“The Giants have the fifth overall pick in the June draft. It’s a shame teams can’t trade picks, because the San Francisco’s needs don’t really match up with the likely best available talent.

Jim Callis provided interesting speculation in issue 0808 of Baseball America’s print magazine. Callis suggested that the Giants may lean toward pitching in June even though the best available talent will be at first base. This is because top prospect Angel Villalona is moving from third to first and the Giants may not want to create a future logjam.

Callis tossed out three possible pitchers for the Giants for the fifth pick: Tim Melville, Christian Friedrich, and Tanner Scheppers.”

Aren’t “San Francisco’s needs” absolutely everything?

Everything

but pitching . . .

Except our needs for hitting outweigh our need for pitching. If there’s a Strasburg type available, yeah, you get him if you have that opportunity. But there are some ripe bats for picking in this year’s draft, and none of the pitchers wow me enough to strongly consider taking one of them instead.
