minor lines, 5/1/08
AAA: Fresno defeated Iowa 8-5
Fresno: 2B Justin Leone: 1 for 3, 2 BB, E
Fresno: RF Nate Schierholtz: 2 for 3, 2B, BB, SB
Fresno: 3B Julio Cordido: 3 for 4
Fresno: RHP Julio Mateo: 6.0 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 6 K--1 HR
Fresno: LHP Erick Threets: 1.0 IP, 2 K
Fresno: RHP Ryan Sadowski: 1.0 IP, 2 K
Leone, Schierholtz and Cordido each reached base three times in four plate appearances, raising their respective OBPs to .366, .344 and .390. Schierholtz's 5th double was the only XBH for a Grizzly starter. He also had his 5th SB. The 27-year-old Cordido has gone 11 for 24 in his last six games to raise his AVG to .342.
Mateo had his longest start of the year and also set a new season high with 6 K. However, his ERA remains above 7.00. Threets threw 8 of 11 pitches for strikes in a perfect 7th inning. Sadowski's second PCL apperance was far better than his first.
AA: Connecticut defeated Trenton 5-4
Connecticut: RF Ben Copeland: 2 for 4, 3B, 2B
Connecticut: LF Carlos Sosa: 3 for 4, HR, 2B, SO
Connecticut: RHP Adam Cowart: 6.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
Connecticut: RHP Steve Palazzolo: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K--1 WP
Connecticut: RHP Sergio Romo: 1.0 IP, 1 H
Sosa connected for his 2nd HR. With three hits, the 24-year-old improved his season line to .276/.375/.447 in 76 AB. With 2 XBH, Copeland had perhaps his best game of the season. He hit ju .173/.264/.235 in 81 AB during April.
Cowart's third straight start with 1 ER in 6.0 IP improved his ERA to 2.01. He had a 10/5 GO/FO line and was victimized by a defense that committed five errors behind him the 4th and 5th innings. Palozzolo allowed just his second run of the year. The 26-year-old has been hard to hit, but he has walked nearly twice as many batters as he has allowed hits (7 H and 12 BB in 18.2 IP). With a 1.35 ERA and 8 saves in 12 appearances, Romo has arguably been the Defenders MVP given how many one-run games they have played.
A+: San Jose lost to High Desert 6-5
(allowing runs in the 7th, 8th and 9th innings)
San Jose: 3B Ryan Rohlinger: 2 for 4, SO
San Jose: DH Andy D'Alessio: 2 for 4, 2B, SO
San Jose: LHP Ben Snyder: 6.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 10 K--1 WP
With two hits each, Rohlinger and D'Alessio improved their respective AVGs to .263 and .353.
Snyder had a tremendous start, facing just three batters over the minimum. The one run he allowed scored on his wild pitch, and it came in an inning in which he struck out swinging three batters. His peripherals stats have been outstanding with 25 H, 4 BB and 33 K in 35.1 IP with a league-leading 1.02 ERA. Unfortunately, the bullpen was not nearly as effective as four different relievers each allowed at least one earned run.
A-: Augusta defeated Charleston 6-3
(scoring in each of the first four innings)
Augusta: 2B Nick Noonan: 2 for 5, 2B, SB
Augusta: DH Thomas Neal: 2 for 4, BB
Augusta: 3B Andrew Davis: 3 for 5
Augusta: 1B Angel Villalona: 0 for 5, 3 SO
Augusta: C Jackson Williams: 2 for 3, BB, SO, PB
Augusta: RHP T.J. Brewer: 6.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K--1 HB
Augusta: RHP Dan Turpen: 0.2 IP, 2 K
Davis's three hits paced the GreenJackets' thirteen hit attack and improved his AVG .244. By contrast, Villalona had an oh-fer with a hat trick. With just 2 H and 8 SO in his last six games, he now has a .200 AVG and a SO/AB ratio closing in on 30%. Neal and Noonan each had two more hits to keep their AVGs above .300, while two hits for Williams raised his AVG to .148.
Brewer's second best start of the year improved his ERA to 4.09. Turpen struck out both batters he faced for his 4th save.

He’s just so young. The kid should be a junior or senior in HS. Can’t expect too much out of him, even if he has already outgrown Andres Galarraga.

Chalk it up to...
...youthful exuberance. From what I’ve seen and heard (my buddy works for the Low A Rockies organization), Angel is trying to hit the crap out of every pitch, leading to the high SO numbers. When expectations are high, young kids usually try to prove that they are worthy of the praise, and Angel is trying WAY too hard.
He still has the skill set that made the Giants sign him, but I’m just afraid that there might not be anyone in Augusta that can reach the kid. If he keeps stiking out in massive #’s, you have to wonder if the coaching staff is really up to par down there (Grant’s latest post raises this question).
Still, he’s only 17, and we’re only a month into the new season. If things keep going downhill, however, there might be some issues that have to be adressed. Maybe Felipe Alou would consider going out to help Angel for a few days, he might be able to reach him better than the current set of coaches. He’s a ball of lard clay that can be molded into something spectacular… who knows whether that will happen.

Culberson with another oh-fer and yet another error. Brutal. I’m kind of surprised they haven’t shut him down for a while.

Travis Denker from CT to Fresno and......
Brad Boyer from SJ to CT in a swap of 2B’s. Did something happen in Fresno with an INF?

Is batting 306, non? not 366. those O-fers earlier in the week hurt the old averages. Still doing a .827 OPS after May 1st.

If he’s healthy, bring him on up. Give him a firstbasemen’s mitt, while you’re at it.

I know you didn’t mean this exactly.
Yet I need to vent. I am pasted sick & tired of the Giants bringing a young guy up and making him adjust to big league pitching & learning a different position at a higher rate of speed. Once in while I can dig it. But every single freaking one?
It’s not like the Vets here are the ‘27 Yanks for Pete’s sake! If playing out of position is so easy then why aren’t the Vets doing it? Slam a first base glove on Winn’s hand. What is he going to do? Demand a trade or something?
Purge over I feel much better now. Thanks.

Half joking
but really, I do think we’re making way to much of the switch to 1B (media included). Basically, 85% of the responsibilities of a first basemen are: 1) catch ball 2) step on base for put out.
I know it’s not that simple, but it’s not like these guys are being asked to play SS or catcher. Nate has played some 3B (I’ve read somewhere he cannot play 3B…can’t remember where), so I would think he’d be okay. Albert Pujoles seemd okay playing RF, LF, 3B, and 1B. I know, extreme example, but all the guys making this switch are good athletes.
All that being said, sure slap a firstbasmen’s mitt on Winn. He can handle it.

You proved the wrong point..
Nate played 3B in the lower minors. His hands were those of metal and he couldn’t make it in the infield. So they moved him to the outfield and he has adjusted fairly enough. Putting him back in the infield, especially at a position where good hands are something that I want to have, is not the right idea.

I didn't
realize his hands were the problem. I haven’t seen him attempt to play the infield, so I just assumed it was a range or accuracy problem. In that case, throw him in RF and put Winn at 1B.

no trade Winn.
I’m confident that Nate will get a couple of months to start in the RF. He will be vetted and tested at the Major League level. the Giants have done a good job at restricting his Phone Booth time to RF. Winn will get hot (he’s a reliable OPS+ 100ish with 14 HRs guy, batting below his norm at the moment), knock three homeruns in a week and get traded. then the dream of Lewis, Rowand, Schierholtz will be fulfilled.

I'm okay with that
I’m sure that if there is ANY interest in Winn he will be gone. I was saying throw a 1B mitt on him right now. Or, better yet, trade Winn for Marte right now, make Castillo the backup IF, send Bocock down, and let Burriss play every day.

Cowart
I love this kid. He’s handled the jump to AA very well so far.
Check out his GB% numbers.
2006 – SK – 83.1 IP, 67% GB%
2007 – Augusta – 169.2 IP, 59% GB%
2008 – Connecticut – 31.1 IP, 61% GB%
Top sinkerballers (Webb, Lowe, Wang) usually operate between 60-65% for GB%.
Over three years, in 284.1 IP, he’s allowed only 6 home runs. Just 6! That’s an amazing ability to keep the ball in the yard, maybe he can be our own version of Chad Bradford or Cla Meredith. I hope he makes it to the bigs.

Forgot to say for comparison, Brandon Webb has a career GB% of 64.2. Of course, he’s done it in the majors but it goes to show how well Cowart has kept the ball on the ground in the minors.

Never get tired of watching Cowart utterly confuse hitters, his pitches literally dance in mid-air , don’t see too many pitchers with that level of control these days. One of my favorite pitchers in the minors also!
here’s a clip from the local paper, if you watch the last 30 seconds there are two shots of him throwing and you can see his stance for yourselves. Not only are the pitches devastating, but you have little reaction time because the ball just looks like it’s coming out of nowhere he hides it so well

Please let me know when I can official board the Ben Snyder bandwagon. This kid is dealing in San Jose. Any chance he will get to see some submarines by summer?

I’m slightly bitter that I was told to disembark the Snyder bandwagon. People should really listen to me because I knew he was gonna continue his success.
