Fan Photo Day
I thought for certain that someone would have created a post about the on the field photo day. I guess I was the only one there. Anyway, I'll create this post and anyone who wants can dump their photos here.
It's possible that I should be creating a FanShot for this, but I don't like those things. Does anyone ever look at them?
On a side note, this is the second time I have to write this entry because the UI designers at SBNation have something to learn... gad friggin jableemafashikkin creppafekkle flippity crap!

Richie was the first around to our spot. I don't know if the guy has a germ thing or something, but he was telling everyone that he couldn't stop to take pictures with them. "We're not allowed." It didn't make him look any better when all the other players came around and hammed it up with the fans.

Sanchez and Merkin were with Aurilia, walking out reach of the fans. Ortmeier also was keeping his distance but came back around later and shook hands.

"Who's that? Who is he?" You heard it a lot when players came by, more than You would hear it in past years (I've been three times before. Well nobody knew this guy. Turns out to be none other than our esteemed first base coach, Roberto Kelly.

Suck IT A's fans! Carney Lansford.

Alex Hinshaw - another "who's he".

Gardy

Adoptee of the great BVCE, Manny Burriss. The ladies love Manny.

SWAGGER!

Misch

Taschner was gracious and took his time with the fans.

Fan favorite.

I missed it with the camera, but Wilson totally showed off the guns when asked. He's not built like a typical pitcher (tall and lanky or big and loady). The dude is solid.

Frandsen rehabbing the tendon (You can see the cast). I have talked to couple of people who know people who have had achilles ruptures. "It's the worst possible pain and the rehab is long and debilitatiing." It would be nice if Frandsen can make a full come back.

If You have never seen him up close, his head is that big. Overall, Bochy is just a huge dude.

Me lady with sweet Ray. More on Ray later.

Bengie sports the the backward cap. Fitting that he was the only one.

Matt Cain always reminded me of one of my nerdy friends from high school. My friend and I would always argue about which was better, Apple2 or Commodore64. I guess I was wrong.

OK, we all know that Timmy is pretty much a stud on the mound. But seriously, the team should consider him a fantastic asset beyond the playing field. I'm not much of a star-struck person. I go to the photo days because the ones I love like to meet the players and get photos, plus it's an opportunity to be on the field (the grass is the softest grass in the world). But Tim was just such a decent guy. All the young players were pleasant, but Tim's star is growing brighter. Besides Ray and Omar, he took the longest to get around the field. He had one of the loudest cheers of the day when they announced his name. If the Giants ever put his name up in trade rumors again, just NO! Never!

Get back and pitch well Noah, so we can trade You for something good.

I totally have no idea who this is.

And I totally have no idea who this dude is either.

So I really only have one purpose on the day, get pictures of my girlfriend with her favorite players, Omar and Ray. Oh yeah, she hates crowds.
We were not right at the rope so we had to do our best to jockey in and ask for a photo. When Omar came by us the first time, I asked for a photo and he started to get in close with my GF when two other girls swooped in and hogged the shot. Admittedly, the other women weren't mean about it, my girlfriend just wasn't quick enough. It's a tough gig down on the field there with all those ladies starved for ballplayer. Anyway, with everyone clamoring or him, we just didn't get the shot with Omar. My woman, was angry and sad and just not happy.
Well after everyone had come and gone around our area in CF, we moved over to see if Omar was still on the field. Sure enough, he was just finishing up even though he was one of the first players on the field and we finally got the photo. Crisis averted!
So as I said, my GF is a big fan of both Ray and Omar. Me, I just want to see good ball and watch the Giants win. If some guy is a jerk in the public eye, it doesn't bother me much. On the other hand, nice guys are easier to root for. I can see where the Giants were looking at such qualities when resigning Ray and Omar.
I hope Ray continues to swing a good bat. It would be nice to see a good guy do well and it would be even better if we could trade him for something.
With Omar, I just have to say that it has been a pleasure having seen him as a Giant. The guy is truly a defensive wonder.
OK, that's enough for now. Post Yer own pics, fankids.

My son is a good looking guy, no doubt. Even I was sort of like “whoa” when I encountered him up close the first time. Other photo posts I’ve seen from the day made Bengie and Ray seem popular, giving hugs and handshakes and posing for photos a lot.
Looked like a fun time out, this photo day. Several people I know have met Tim at various events and they all report he’s just the nicest guy ever. Which is great to know. As an aside I love that gal’s green nail polish in the Lansford photo.
WHO’S ALEX HINSHAW?! Blasphemy.

I hope not, because my nails are freshly polished green. Though my fingers are more of a lime while my toes are a jungle green.

Great pictures
In Richie’s defense, I’ve seen him interact well with fans in other gatherings, so maybe he was just having a bad day.
Did Zito make an appearance? I know he was pitching that night, but I’m wondering if he just doesn’t feel comfortable right now getting up close with Giants fans.

Zito not on the field
All the fans were respectful, but if someone was going to catch heat, I’m thinking Zito would be that person. In the past, the gameday SP has not been on the field for photo day, so it wasn’t a surprise that he wasn’t there.
Speaking of Zito, I was blown away by his game (not in a good way). Dude had a ton of runners on. He threw 95 pitches in four innings and gave up only two runs. I don’t ever remember seeing anything like that. I kept waiting for the Sox to blow it up, but they never did. How he didn’t come out of that game behind by ten runs is beyond me!

Also attended with the girlfriend
Omar, Bengie, Ray, Wilson, Frandsen, Sadler and Taschner were a few that I remember being especially friendly. They announced that we weren’t allowed to ask for any autographs, but Fred Lewis and Manny Burriss were signing anything that was put in front of them. Omar took twice as long as any other Giant to make it all the way around, and even caught the girl on crutches next to us as she was about to fall (she certainly did it on purpose; she was raving about how great he smelled before he came over).
We were pretty star struck since it was the closest we’d ever been to players, but it was a really incredible experience. Highly recommended for all of you!

that's disappointing re: aurilla
“sorry we are not allowed to do that?” uhhh…richie, it’s ON THE FIELD PHOTO DAY. I’m guessing you should take some pics with the fans.
didn’t expect that to come from richie…seemed to always be like a fan favorite.
i will second what thatdog said about Tash and Ray Ray. I’ve met the both of them on two occassions during that Season Ticket Holder picnic thing and they’ve both been nothing but class acts both times I’ve seen them.
Great pics man. Nice to see Frandsen out there even with a cast on. I’ve always liked the guy.
Kinda surprising although understandable to not see Zito there. He seemed to thrive on events like this before. But after his perfomance this season, I’m sure there would have been a few idiot fans to get in his face or boo him. Not to say that he doesn’t deserve to get booed, but probably not at an event like this for the fans.

Also SFLL day
I have been too busy since Sat. to post, and don’t really have much more time than now, but photo day was also SF Little League Day. So, all the SF little leaguers (at least the ones that could afford VR tickets) entered the park around 1:30 and sat near the visitors’ dugout. Krukow was the MC, and hosted a little baseball seminar and Q&A session. His “guests” were Mark Gardner, who talked about pitching, Bowker, who talked about hitting, and Aurilia, who did a nice little bit on fielding and being a career guy.
The questions came from kids around 6-8 years old, so they were long on cute and short on biting, insightful commentary. “What’s your favorite baseball team” was one Aurilia fielded, and he talked about how he’s glad to be back with the Giants again. It was really a nice event, but unfortunately almost no one but Krukow considered that they were talking to 8 year olds. And the format was basically sit there and listen for two hours, so you can imagine how that went. My nephew asked one question and then when Gardner answered him he started pestering the kid next to him to get some of his chips. The guys mostly talked like they were in Burlingame talking to a booster club; I loved it but the kids were mostly bored.
After all of that, they had a very poorly organized raffle where they gave away some balls signed by each of the guys, a whole bunch (like 10) kid-sized Omar jerseys, and then 6 or 8 pairs of tickets to sit in the pit next to the visitors’ dugout during the game, which led to a frenzy of parents running to get their ticket stubs in the box. My wife managed to get the barcode torn off her stub in doing that, so when we went out later to get supper we basically had to go in and out 4 gates and get strip-searched to get back in for the game.
For my money the best performance was by Krukow. He tried to talk so that the kids would understand, although he told some stories for the parents too. Kids kept asking about arm-destroyers like curves, sliders, etc., which he and Gardner refused to talk about, but Kruk did show how to get sink or slide action on fastballs just by changing the position of the thumb. He also gave a very nice pep talk about the importance of playing catch, about HOW to play catch, and then told a nice yarn (some of which I think he cribbed from a song) about his son wanting to play catch after he got home from pitching a whole game. He was really, really great.
So, after that, they had everyone assemble at 3:45 to go down for photo day, so ALL the SFLL kids and the parents and coaches and hangers-on like me got to go down. So of course 85% of the kids just ran around playing catch, tag, pepper, etc. Oh yes, the pepper… I forgot to mention that all the SFLL kids got bats. Not little tiny bats, but kid-sized wood bats. Which is of course a great “pimento” of their experience. However, these were handed out to kids as they arrived for the lecture, so those talks were punctuated with clanks and “ouch”es and “where’s my bat” cries. On the plus side, I ended up taking my nephew’s bat home for him and discovered that people on the streets of SF give you a WIDE berth if you are walking down the street with a baseball bat.
As for the photo day part, that seems to be well-covered. Omar took years to get around the circle, and he seemed to be exactly as one would expect him to be. We were standing next to two girls (young women, I guess, I’m getting old) who had been stuck on a plane with him once. He apparently let them use his cell phone to make a call. When he came around, he recognized them right away, said he was glad they finally got a flight, etc. which seemed pretty impressive considering all the faces he had seen by that point.
Sanchez was nice and took a picture with my nephew (who’s on the Cubs) and covered up the logo on my nephew’s hat with his hand which was kind of funny.
Lowry got accosted by some girls and was rescued by a security guard and basically skipped us and the airplane girls mentioned above, which was too bad because they had been waiting around to see him (one of them even had a Lowry t-shirt on).
Rowand seemed much thinner than I expected, almost like Randy Winn. He seems more barrel-chested on TV and at a distance.
My wife rated Bengie (yes), Frandsen, and Aurilia as quite handsome. But Manny got like three or four “wows” out of her. He is also very charming and gracious and I hope that his considerable baseball talents combine with all that to make him a real centerpiece of the team on and off the field (he’s seemed pretty polished when I’ve seen him interviewed on TV too).
No Zito because he was starting. Or something.
Cain is a big dude! Tim is a tiny dude, looks like a shortstop or something. They were of course big attractions.
Bochy was late coming out and by the time he was coming around everyone was leaving. My wife felt sorry for him and took a picture.
We’re taking off for a few days but if this isn’t old news in June I’ll try to get some pictures posted.

Also forgot that my nephew, before he ran off to find his teammates to play 3 flies up or pepper or whatever they were doing, asked almost every Giant who came by “Who are you?”
I heard him do it to Chulk and Yabu, who both took it good-naturedly. Yabu is also a bigger dude than I expected.

There were plenty of players that I couldn’t get good photos of. There were a row of women in front of me and much of the time I held my camera out over their heads to get a shot. I have a first gen digital Rebel. The AF is kinda bad and the ‘program’ setting is not so great. So I manually set the exposure, shoved the camera out there and hoped for the best. I got a lot of blurry pictures, some that were overexposed and plenty of chopped heads, necks, etc.
So most of the players were out there, including Winn. The only players I do not recall seeing : Zito and Correia. I think everyone else was present.
One extra note: Fred Lewis is quiet. He stopped for a lot of people and took his time, but I don’t think I heard the guy say a word. I saw him interviewed after that game in Colorado last year. The broadcast guys had to work to get him to talk about himself. The guy seems incredibly shy.
