Kawakami's Keepers

Tim Kawakami, apparently working on a deadline so tight as to rule out actual thinking, has a piece in today's Mercury News listing the "keepers" for both the Giants and the A's. He concludes that the A's have a big advantage in "keepers", which apparently means players that Tim Kawakami likes.

For instance, you would think that Jonathan Sanchez, who is only 25, in his first season as a full-time starter, and is among the top 10 in the league in strikeouts, would be a keeper. But what does Kawakami have to say?

Jonathan Sanchez (no - good stuff, but he's averaging less than six innings per start)

True, he's averaging less than six innings per start. You know who else is averaging less than six innings per start? How about Oakland's Dana Eveland, Justin Duchscherer, and Rich Harden, all of whom made the "keepers" list.

Here's another keeper for the A's:

Daric Barton (not a great start, but the talent's there)

As contrasted with the Giants' first baseman:

John Bowker (proving he's a non-keeper)

Bowker: .269/.300/.452, 4 HRs

Barton:  .221/.331/.322, 2 HRs

So by playing better than Barton, on a worse team, Bowker is proving that he's not as good?

Anway, he goes on to toss a bunch of players into one bucket or the other with a depth of analysis that rarely goes beyond "borderline yes" or "borderline no", and comes to the laughable conclusion that:

I counted everything that matters, and everything that will matter for a while.

Apparently, the only thing that really counts is the number of words Kawakami needed to turn in yesterday.

LOL I was reading that article this morning

I think the whole article was trying prove that the A’s are in better shape than the Giants and to make that point, he made some ridiculous points.

Santiago Cassia yes, but Merkin Valdez no?
Rich Harden very injury prone yes?

And you made the Sanchez point.

And then he completely ignores Nate Schierholtz in the minor league argument. He hates the Giants, you can see that in his talking points and vividly in this article.

I would agree with most of it

But give the giants a little credit… I would def put Sanchez as a yes if hes going to put Harden as a yes. Both kind of unrealized talent but for two different reasons.

Check the stats Casilla way yes before the injury but I’d also say yes to Merkin(hate to see where the Gmen bullpen would be without him)

In the Barton comp. yes hes comparing upside and talent vs production. I don’t think any sane person on any team would take Bowker over Barton for the long haul if they had the choice between the two.

Tim Kawakami, still bad.

He's bad in print, he's bad on the radio

I had to listen to him with Ralph Barbieri today on the way home. The only reason why I was listinening…Peter McGowen interview. But geez, that guy is bad and really into himself.

Tim Kawakami actually works as Stomper, the A’s mascot, on the side.

That’s how he gets all his “inside” information.

Because he’s talking about my team, my first reaction to that article is to say Tim writes with a little East Bay Bias or South Bay (the A’s are moving to Fremont, aren’t they?) considering he writes for a San Jose rag, but the thing is he is probably partially right.

We have been pretty lucky this season with our record. We were supposed to be shitty because of lack of an offense this year. What we got was a nice record for awhile until finally falling back to earth (1-6 in our last two series at home). The fact is he is right, our positional prospects are crap. Great starting pitching has kept us in games and incredibly bad offense and of recently bad bullpen has cost us these games.

I do disagree on his evaluation of Jonthan Sanchez, considering this is a guy who has been bounced between starter and relief roles for the past few years and this was the first year he has been given a permenant rotation spot. Usually you want to give these guys a little time to learn how to pitch as a starter and find ways to limit their pitch counts. Because of his high strikeout ratio (and being a Giants fan) I am going to be optomistic until Dirty Sanchez has a full season as a starter under his belt.

by WilliamVanLandingham on May 19, 2008 11:24 AM PDT   0 recs

It’s not even so much that his bottom line (A’s have more “keepers”) is necessarily wrong as that his “evaluation” is so offhanded and arbitrary as to be completely meaningless. As gianator mentioned upthread, the one-word dismissal of Merkin Valdez, who has been excellent this year before his injury, is another example.

Also, can anyone explain what makes Kurt Suzuki a “versatile” catcher? To me, that would mean he can play multiple positions, but aside from a few games at DH and 1 (one) minor league game at first, he’s strictly played catcher.

As for Merkin, he was good at the beginning of the season and has great stuff so I would agree with your problem with his one-word dismissal of him. Merkin does have a history of injury and control problems, so he might have factored that into his keeper equation. Then again he probably doesn’t know poop about the Giants in the first place.

I think my problem is I can’t really criticize his list too much because I can’t judge his decisions of A’s players because I don’t know enough about them. I won’t watch an A’s game if it is the only thing on. I won’t go to an A’s game unless I am given really good seats or they are playing the Giants.

by WilliamVanLandingham on May 19, 2008 12:45 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Suzuki

I don’t get that either. I like his ability because he handles the position well both defensively and handles the staff well, and he can hit. Versatile suggests the player can do well outside his usual position, and as you said E-Me, he doesn’t have another position. That’s what she said. Anyway, no, I think Kawakami isn’t using the term properly. Or he’s using it within his own mysterious context.

Kawakami’s a dope who doesn’t let facts get in the way of a controversial argument. A week or so ago, he made the argument that Fred Lewis was the best offensive player on the Giants because look at the shiny OPS… no matter that Aaron Rowand’s was about 100 points higher at the time.

Just ignore him, if we respond with vitriol he’s getting the notoriety sports columnists crave. Irrelevance, though, that’ll hit ‘em where it counts—in the wallet.

The Director's Cut

Apparently Tim Kawakami realized that his column didn’t make any sense, because he has now posted what he describes as “the director’s cut” on his blog. It actually contains something resembling analysis, and corrects the description of Suzuki (“athletic” makes more sense than “versatile”).

I still think he’s not very fair to Sanchez or Bowker. His expanded comments on Bowker:

Nice start. Not much since and you usually show what you are when you get 93 at-bats at age 24.

First of all, 93 ABs aren’t that many. Second, after his slump Bowker has actually been hot in the month of May, to the tune of .389/.425/.528. If that’s the “not much” I’ll take more of it.

I think his comment on Ortmeier (“Hasn’t won over Bruce Bochy”) is kind of a cheap shot, although I’d find it hard to argue convincingly that Ortmeier has proven himself a “keeper” (his line since abandoning switch hitting is a very respectable .297/.435/.432, but we’re only talking about 46 PAs).

he's getting ripped over there

kawakami seems to have some grudge or something -
would anyone trade Sanchez for Duchscherer? not me….

and i dont count on much from Bowker but its too early to call him a non-keeper….same with Sadler, Valdez…..

Can we give travis more than 100+ at-bats to get back to form?

My Giants Keepers

Okay, so let me try my hand at this.

Holm – Probably only a backup catcher but, hey, those have value

Bowker – He’s looked good so far. Probably will never be an all-star but I can see 280/350/450 from him in the future.

Frandsen – Most disappointing development of the season.

Velez – Yes, Velez. He’s a fringy keeper, but a keeper nonetheless. He won’t always be this bad. In fact, I’m pretty sure he really isn’t this bad. He should probably never start for any big league team but as a pinch hitter/runner he’s a keeper.

Burriss – Get him back down to the minors but his approach has been good despite being in water that’s way too deep for him at the moment.

Freddie – We like

Rowand – Gamer

Winn – if he’s the second or seventh hitter

Lincecum – Duh

Cain – Duh

Sanchez – May New Jonathan stick around!

Correia – Good fourth or fifth starter

Misch – It’s been a little rough so far, but I believe in him

Lowry – Maybe. We’ll see.

Merkin – Looking good before the injury

Hinshaw – I really like this guy

Wilson – His last outing was an abberation

Walker – He’s really rejuvinated (though, when was his career juvinated in the first place?) his career, despite his recent struggles

Chulk – NOT A BAD PITCHER!

Taschner – Wouldn’t have believed it before the start of this season.

Sadler – This year’s Brian Wilson-style control problem fix.

CONCLUSION: This was a huge, stupid waste of time that has no bearing on anything. “Keepers?” The Giants are bad. And most of their 25 man roster (plus the guys on the disabled list) are keepers. The same goes for most of the teams in baseball.

Only 926 games until the end of Zito's contract

by thehavenot on May 19, 2008 10:29 PM PDT   0 recs

By the way

Taschner is the reason why “keepers” lists are stupid. Most of us, I’d wager, would have left Taschner off any list of this type had they been made in the off-season.

The only keepers

The only keepers the Giants have are Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain and a few of the other young pitchers. Aaron Rowand is a keeper and a gamer, but by the time the Giants become good, he will be past his prime, thus making him a trader now.

The Giants’ problems have been a lack of player drafting and development, bad luck on the free agent market, too few players with trade value and a failure to realize when players were reaching their peak and should be traded while their value was as high as it was likely to get.

Aside from little talent and poor execution thoughout the organization (and I’m talking primarily off the field), the Giants have been nails.
