Some Random Zito (crap)
Dear Diary,
I have many different thoughts bouncing around my head. None of them warrant a diary (yes, diary. You heard me SB Nation!) by themselves (with the possible exception of the first one). So this diary is me having diarrhea of the brain.
-This year, the Giants have been very aggressive in regards to promoting prospects. The thing is, it's been selective. Nate, for instance, is still in AAA because of his option. Meanwhile, Bowker and Burriss are up in the show when they could still use some time in the minors. Then there's Sadler and Hinshaw. Bocock was up and when he went back down, it was to AAA. Denker was quickly promoted to AAA and Sandoval will likely skip AA. The thing is, there seems to be a legitimate and sound reason for every move, excepting Bocock. Yes, you can criticize management for creating the situation which has necessitated this (particularly Bocock and Burriss), but the treatment of the prospects has been fairly encouraging. It points to a true focus on development from within.
-Speaking of prospects, I love John Bowker. He looks good. I wish he would take some more walks. His strikeout to walk ratio is horrible. But he looks like a hitter up there. He's even battled through a slump. He's up in my pantheon of favorite prospects with Denker, Schierholtz, Sandoval and Bond.
-Apparently Jason Giambi wears a gold thong as a slump breaker. But that's not all. He apparently has shared it with Johnny Damon and Derek Jeter. Gah
-Why is nobody in the mainstream media talking about our boy Lincecum? Is it just because the Giants are officially the last team in major league baseball. Post-Bonds, horrible awesome, bad record. They are very forgettable. Aside from us, nobody cares about the Giants at all. In most quarters, the Giants are a joke. But why would that mean everybody in the mainstream media ignore such a phenomenal talent just because of the team he is on?
-F.P. Santangelo is an idiot and I wish he would stop being part of KNBR broadcasts.
-Is it just me or is 70 million over 6 years very reasonable for Hanley Ramirez?
-New Jonathan again last night. Stick around buddy.
-Petey's announcement makes me think about how much I hate the commissioner of baseball. Gary Radnich was talking about how Bud was thinking about community service for the owners of the Giants and some others. That guy....words fail me. He continues to deflect blame everywhere except for himself. It also seems obvious that the Giants are a target not just because of Barry Bonds but also because they built their own ballpark. Bud hated this. The owner's representative wanted publicly funded ballparks everywhere and with the privately funded phone park, there was precedent for another means for new ballparks.
-Is it arrogant of me to think that some random thoughts of mine deserve their own diary? Or does the fact that I think no one will care cancel that out?
-

You lost me at Gary Radnich.
Which, to your credit, is pretty much right at the end there. I actually saw a Tim Lincecum segment on ESPN a few weeks ago. Earlier in the season the mainstream media actually seemed to be playing some positive Giants segments with relative frequency trying to get in on the angle of “these are the new, likeable, Bondsless Giants!” but then it turned out the team just isn’t very good/interesting-to-the-non-Giants-fan and all of that disappeared.
Who doesn’t wear a gold thong to bust a slump? I thought the gold thong was the tacit signal to slump-busters that now’s your chance so jump on it!
F. P. Santangelo’s problem is that he talks TO the audience, which is a direct cause in broadcasting for talking DOWN TO the audience. Very few guys can address the audience itself and come off as anything but an ass-face. The greatest things about our Big Four of announcers is that they either 1) talk to each other, 2) talk to themselves (no chance of talking down to yourself) or 3) talk FOR the audience, all of which are recipes for success, but all of which are rare qualities in broadcasting.

I’m not sure I see any coherent reasoning behind the promotion of prospects lately. One after another, players skip a level or get promoted without having accomplished anything at their current level. Often, they’re thrust into key roles on the big league team despite being plainly unprepared. A few young players may benefit from this tough-love approach, but for the most part they’re being set up to fail.

I see a change in philosophy
There is a new focus on our prospects. Where before our prospects would come up and play bench/pinch hitter roles, now they are starting fairly regularly. I have no real problem with somewhat aggressive promotions. The Giants haven’t really gone overboard, except for Bocock. The surprises were Bocock, Burriss and Bowker. With the two middle infielders being somewhat of a necessity, that just leaves Bowker, whose impressive AA season last year and his start in AAA makes it understandable.
Even Bocock and Burriss show something of a switch in outlook. Where before Sabean would have gone out and gotten someone like Castillo for middle infield, he went with the farm. Yeah, sure, he passed over Ochoa. But it seems that he does not consider him (or McClain or Leone) as actual useful pieces besides AAA filler.
I’m a big fan of seeing what prospects can do in the majors (within reason, which is why I thought the Bocock promotion was silly). Nothing in the minors is like the majors. Let’s see. If they look obviously lost then it’s back down (Bocock already sent down, don’t know why Velez is still up). But Bowker has done well. Yeah, he still has stuff to learn. But if a team is not going to contend anyway why not have him learn while up in the bigs if he can cut it? And Burriss and Bowker, at least, seem to be able to cut it.

Burriss has an OPS+ of 57 and an OBP of .288 since he was brought up. Before that he was OPSing .587 in AAA, in a hitters league, in a hitters park.
The difference between Bocock and Burriss isn’t that big:
B. Bocock, age 22, A ball: .292/.354/.379./.733.
E. Burriss, age 22, A ball: .321/.374/.389./.755.
B. Bocock, age 22, A+: .220/.293/.328./.621.
E. Burriss, age 22, A+: .165/.237/.180./.417.
Last year Burriss had an OPS only 5 points higher than Bocock, even though he played most of the season at a lower level. He’s probably the better hitter, but he really shouldn’t be in the majors right now.
..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.

Burriss is a good example of what I’m talking about. Here’s his career progression thus far:
65 games in rookie ball
36 games in high A
89 games in low A
?? games in AFL
14 games in AAA
majors
He’s hit pretty well at three of those stops, horribly at the other three. Where’s the rhyme or reason in this development scheme?

In regards to prospects in the show
I look less at success and more at approach and how they respond to adversity. Obviously most prospects (even if they are ready) are going to have struggles when they make it to the show. I care about how they respond to those struggles. Burriss hasn’t done well but he looks like he knows what he is about. And most importantly, he hasn’t changed his approach as far as I can tell. He realizes what his strengths are and what his weaknesses are and he plays the game accordingly. He’s still developing but I don’t see that much harm in him being up here. Especially because of tthe situation.
Of course, I do think that Burriss should not be up here. But, I did mention that both him and Bocock were necessitated due to the middle infield situation. So I really don’t think pointing out Burriss’s struggles really undermines my point.
