2008 Draft
For those of us that would like to see the Giants draft a premium hitter, things are starting to look more likely. Crow's late season struggles have dropped his stock slightly. Schepper's injury likely drops him out of consideration for the Giants. That only leaves Matusz as a possible pick at #5, and he could very well be gone by the time the Giants pick.
I see the best hitting prospects as falling into three tiers: Excellent (Tim B, Alvarez, Smoak), Very Good (Hosmer, Skipworth), and Good (Posey, Gordon B, a few others). At the very least, the Giants are guaranteed a Very Good hitter even if all four teams ahead of them draft hitters. If Matusz and Posey are picked before their turn, they are guaranteed an Excellent hitter.
So, I feel really good about the draft, except for these nagging nightmares:
- on draft day the Giants can't agree on who to draft and yell, "Pass!" when their turn comes.
-the guy in charge of bringing the lists accidentally brings the 2007 list.
-as a favor to the new MGP, the Giants draft little Skipper Neukom, nephew of Bill, who hit .237 with 0 HR and 6 RBI as a third string catcher in high school.
So what do you see the Giants doing now? Any nightmare scenarios?

Drafting someone like Buster Posey. I’m sorry, I’m just not that high on the kid. Picking up someone like Aaron Crow or Brian Matusz would just be a head scratcher.
Question is, if both Tim Beckham and Smoak are available, which one do you take? Beckham has more upside, obviously, but he’s not nearly as polished and our system isn’t very adept at producing raw hitters. So, does that mean you go after the guy that’s more of a sure thing in Smoak? That’d be a tough decision for me, given our organization. The true nightmare scenario for me would be drafting a bust. I don’t mind taking risks here and there, but when you’re in the position we’re in, it’d be nice to have something work out.

A week ago, I would have said Beckham. Now I say Smoak. Nothing has changed between now and then, so I guess I’d be happy with both.
I’d be 100% pro-Beckham if the Giants had developed a high-school hitter since Chili Davis.

I'm kind of with you
It’s hard to take a chance on Beckham because he’s a huge risk and we’re just not good at developing high-schoolers. Smoak, we’d barely have to touch.
that said, I still really really really really like Tim Beckham.

I may be naive, but I’d like to think that we will have different people in charge of this team before Tim Beckham is 20 years old.

I think Tim Beckham is probably a better prospect for other teams than he is for the Giants. His weaknesses (raw hitting mechanics) match up exactly with the Giants’ weakness (helping young hitter succeed). I’d be thrilled to have him anyway, but I’d be awfully tempted to go with a polished college hitter like Smoak.
Nevertheless, they’re both fantastic prospects.

Alvarez or Smoak
I want Alvarez or Smoak. I think it’s unlikely we get a shot a either of these guys but the Giants need a refined guy who can move quickly through the system. While G Beckham probably fits in this category also the Giants do have some decent middle infielders in the system. T Beckham is just too much of a longterm thing for me.

Patience is a virtue, especially with this team. Get the best player available, (non pitcher) even if you have to wait an extra year or two. I want Pedro Alvarez, but he’ll be gone by the time the Giants’ pick. My draft motto is “you can never have enough Timmys!!” However, I have no problem if they desperately choose the quick route and pick someone like Smoak. Do NOT draft a pitcher!!

Drafting is like voting: Draft early and often
Unless Tidrow goes ga-ga over another pitcher SF is likely to find a nice hitting prospect. What was the story about drafting a 1b in the top selections and the HOF? I know Yonder Alonso doesn’t get enough publicity but everything I read about this kid reminds me a lot of former great Tony Perez. Sitting pretty at #5 SF should find a gem.

I'm not so high on Alonso for a couple of reasons
1. He really doesn’t have the greatest power. It’s above average, but projects for somewhere in the twenties. he’s supposed to be a good hitter, but I want my first basemen hitting a lot.
2. his swing kind of scares me. he turns all right on the ball and firms up his front side well. The big red flag in the swing is how little the bat stays in the zone. He’s got a big uppercut and I really don’t see how he keeps such a high batting average. He has a definite hitch in his swing that’ll need to be corrected. I think he’s more of a 20-30 pick right now, truth be told.

I like Alonso, but I think Smoak is the better bet. For one thing, Smoak is considered the better athlete and defender. He’s also got more power.
Alonso is a fine hitter, too, but he relies partly on good plate discipline, and I have to wonder if that will translate as well to the pros as big-time power. Power and discipline are both great attributes to have, but Baseball Prospects has said that one of the most positive markers for future success in a young hitter is power.

Lots to like about Smoak
Have read many good things about Smoak.
Did you know Alonso stole 13 out of 16 attempts? Has a great work ethic. Supposedly can also play some 3b (probably not like Feliz but also probably not like Brenly). And the kids power stroke has returned the last month and he is hammering the ball.

Alonso
Alonso is a good hitter & someone will be pleased to get him, but in my opinion there’s better players available at #5, i’d imagine he’ll go around #15.

Smoak
is a stud. Really ,whats bad about him other than the fact that he plays the same position as AnVil?
by sam23 on May 17, 2008 12:51 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Smoak is nearly 4 years older than AnVil
he’d probably make it to the majors before AnVil anyway. Plus, AnVil is far from a sure thing. But either way, it’d be a nice problem to have.

my nightmare
is the organization deciding that they want a “signable” player and draft someone rated much lower. I don’t think that’s very likely, but that’s why it’s a nightmare.

the crazy thing about Jackson Williams
is that he pretty clearly wasn’t a signability pick, as they gave him a full-slot contract right in line with what anybody would have gotten at that pick. They actually seemed to believe he was worthy of the #43 pick, which is to my mind a more serious problem than just being cheap.

Hosmer has the best ceiling of any prospect in this draft
if it wasn’t for his bonus demands, I think he’d be a guaranteed top 5. He’s got so much power potential it’s scary.

I still think Gordon Beckham would be the smartest choice
But I think Smoak would look very good in french vanilla. As mentioned previously by SLO and Dan, I’d stay very far away from Tim Beckham. And, to me, you just don’t draft a catcher at #5, as good as Posey is projected to be.

Actually I'd be happy with Posey at #5
Historically, you absolutely don’t draft a college true 1B that high. What are the stats on that? The last one taken even in the first round was Adrian Gonzalez or somebody like that.
I’d say 1) G. Beckham, 2) Posey, 3) Smoak (assuming Alvarez is off the board. That said, if T. Beckham was still there I’d say nab him and put him together with the Villalona/Noonan group o’ youngsters.

You know, one of the big bullet-point conclusions of Baseball Prospectus’s draft study a few years ago was that college first basemen were far and away the BEST group of players to draft. The reason, presumably, is that because they’re not very athletic, no one pays any attention to them unless they can really hit.
College 1Bs drafted in the top twenty since 1990 (omitting two players who obviously weren’t true first basemen, Terrence Long and Nick Swisher):
David McCarty #3
Helton #8
Berkman #16
Carlos Pena #10
Gonzalez #1
Kotchman #13
Michael Aubrey #11
Conor Jackson #19
Matt LaPorta #7
That’s two flops, six very good players, and one too-soon-to-tell. Pretty good return.

Magowan talks draft day strategy
Managing general partner Peter Magowan said the Giants want to select a position player with their first pick in the June 5 amateur draft.
In an interview Friday, Magowan was discussing the team’s long-held strategy of drafting as much pitching as possible, which served the Giants well until market conditions made it more difficult to acquire position players via trades or free agency.
“The last few years we have been changing direction,” Magowan said. “Four of the first six guys we drafted last year were position players. We hope to get a position player this time.”
The Giants have an obvious power shortage and a need for corner infielders. Over the years, other teams have added offense relatively quickly by drafting college hitters. Dick Tidrow, the Giants’ vice president of player personnel, has been an advocate for drafting pitching, particularly when the Giants were winning and did not get to pick until the end of the of the first round. By then, Tidrow said, the remaining hitters were not as good as the pitchers still available.
This year, the Giants have the fifth overall pick. Among the highest-rated prospects are Florida State catcher Buster Posey, Vanderbilt third baseman Pedro Alvarez and South Carolina first baseman Justin Smoak.

It’s hard to come up with a nightmare scenario because there are just too many decent options available. We’d have to really reach to pick up someone i didn’t like. I guess if we passed on Alvarez, i’d be pretty disappointed, but i doubt he’ll be there to pass on. If we’re ignoring pitchers for a moment, then my preferences would be:
1) Alvarez
2) T. Beckham
3) Smoak
4) G. Beckham
5) Posey

Andrew Baggarly has a blog - Extra Baggs
Giants beat writer shares a little extra from my interview with Brian Sabean. He writes that he’d wager this is the most time Sabean personally has invested in the draft in many, many years. Maybe since he was scouting director with the Yankees. Sabean certainly didn’t miss with the sixth overall pick in 1992, when Derek Jeter first entered Yankee lore. Is high school shortstop Tim Beckham another Jeter? If he lasts to the fifth pick, we’ll soon find out if Sabean thinks so.
Interesting read and Sabes answers a few questions.

2008 Draft beginning to take some shape
With the draft just weeks away it seems to be taking some shape. The Rays have the first selection and have seemed to narrow their choice down to two players – Beckham and Posey. Picking second the Pirates will attempt to right their ship with the choice of Pedro Alvarez. MLB.com Kansas City beat writer believes the Royals have narrowed the third selection to either Alvarez or Justin Smoak. The Baltimore Orioles have the fourth pick and both Jim Callis of BA and Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com believe the Birds will go with LHP Brian Matusz.
This leaves our beloved SF Giants the choice of:
- Buster Posey C
- Tim Beckham SS
- Eric Hosmer 1b
- Gordon Beckham SS
- Aaron Crow RHP
- Yonder Alonso 1b
