Hinshaw up, Frandsen to 60-day DL
From Rotoworld
Giants purchased the contract of LHP Alex Hinshaw from Triple-A Fresno.
The 25-year-old Hinshaw will make his major league debut after allowing one run in 15 2/3 innings for Fresno. There's no real upside here, but it's worth giving him a look to see if his soft stuff can fool major league hitters.
I'm not sure I've heard about his "soft stuff" I thought he was supposed to be in the lower 90s?
Anyways, he's been solid in Fresno and I hope he does well now that he's called up. Question, why wasn't Franny put on the 60-day DL a long time ago?

Merkin
Also, it looks like Merkin is headed to the DL with a forearm strain. Probably not a good sign for him.
Rotoworld again
Giants placed RHP Merkin Valdez on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 14, with a right elbow strain. It’s disgusting that the Giants didn’t just do this in the first place. There was no reason at all to take a chance with Valdez’s arm in his first year back from Tommy John surgery. However, he was allowed to pitch Monday after coming down with some soreness a few days earlier and turned in his worst outing of the season to date.
It’s disgusting that the Giants didn’t just do this in the first place.
A good chunk of my life is dedicated to backseat managing, but, man, I hope I never come off as this condescending. I’m pretty critical of how the Giants run a lot of things, but I sure as hell don’t know anything about the new trainer. And I’m pretty sure Rotoworld doesn’t either. There could have been a very good reason to think Valdez needed a little extra rest instead of the DL.

Yeah, it might be a tad harsh but I think you would handle a TJ survivor like Merkin with kid gloves as he works his way back. I know that Groeschner had some issues in Chicago but I’ve never read the details. I believe he was fired from the Chicago job before coming to the Giants.
I’m just not sure why Rotoworld is all righteous that he was only held out for seven days instead of 15. It’s not like the Giants threw him in both games of a doubleheader and told him to man up. Holding him out for a week might not be kid gloves, but it isn’t exactly mashing him to a pulp for the organization’s amusement.

"Mashing a Merkin"
Sounds like an awesome dance.
“Quick, do the Merkin Mash! “
I agree, I don’t really see the abuse. I wonder if they performed any precautionary procedures with him? I never read him getting a MRI or anything in the news.
Interesting, looks like Groeschner might not have been licensed to be a trainer in Illinois during his breif tenure with the Cubs.

Krum alleges that the Cubs fired him in retaliation for reporting to Jim Hendry that former head athletic trainer Dave Groeschner was not licensed to be an athletic trainer in Illinois.
So will we not have a trainer when we visit the Cubs?

Because we didn’t have anyone else to take his spot on the 40 man roster. Moving him to the 60 day DL wouldn’t have made any difference so they waited until they needed his roster spot before making the move.

If I'm not mistaken
I believe MLB rules mandate that your 40-man should be full during the season. Since putting people on the 40-man has various (unwanted) consequences involving both finances and options/service clock, you don’t necessarily want to be opening up slots where there isn’t a specific need.
My boy ain't fat, he's just big boned. Big bat, too.
I don't think the 40 man has to full
There were a few point last year we the Giants were only carrying 39. I kept waiting for a couple trades to happen because of it. In hind sight I reckon Sabean was saving the spot in case he got a waiver wire find or signed a free agent.

Welcome Alex! Now that makes two guys I’ve interviewed in the Show. Well three if you count Nate but initially I’d interviewed him in the AFL, after the 2007 season was done.

Not to get on an anti-Rotoworld tangent again, but, yeah. He isn’t exactly Pat Misch. I appreciate the efforts to give news on every player, but this seems like a pure guess.
All these LHP just get so confusing.

Yeah, I’ve heard he has decent velocity. For what it’s worth, Sabean said he has an “electric arm”.
Less arm, more talk. Raisingcain is a GAMER.

Sir Alex Hinshaw
We bow down before you and welcome your to The City. Now go out there and put up zeros.
Regarding Merkin Valdez: He is 19 months removed from TJ surgery – which is plenty of time.
Does anyone have a scouting report on Hinshaw?
I have searched and asked, searched and asked, but I can’t find a scouting report on the dude. What does he throw? Does he beat mimes with an olive loaf?
Psycho killer, qu'est-ce que c'est?
If he did that second part I might have to marry him.

I don’t do enough Bloom County references. I can quote them like they were movie lines, but it’s a skill that I rarely get to use. I doff my cap to you, sir.

I don’t want to be a pessimist, but he reverts back to the walk rate he had in the Cal League, I don’t think he’ll ever be an All-Star.
by Grant Brisbee on May 15, 2008 2:07 PM PDT up reply actions
that is a Zitoesque walk rate
but the trend has been very good, though a relatively small sample size.

Rotoworld sucks
They seriously can’t stand the Giants. I hope Hinshaw throws a 92 MPH fastball through the basement of someone’s mom’s house where they work.

This move makes sense
The White Sox have more than one lefthanded batter on their roster. Therefore, we need another lefty reliever to get them both out.
Strategy!

Merkin Valdez
Personally, I think he was better when he was “MUR-kin” Valdez. He’s only been declining since he’s been “mur-KEEN” Valdez.

Excellent point
Altho frankly, he has been great all season.

You are correct, sir
Yeah, I actually thought he might supplant Mike Love as the closer, so it really was quite a comeback this season.
We can agree on one thing though…Manny Mateo sucked.
