Connecticut: RHP Josh Sharpless: 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 BB
New Hampshire: LHP Ricky Romero: 5.0 IP, 10 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
Every Defender in the lineup had a hit, and five of them had multiple hits. Rosario's four hits paced the Defenders' sixteen-hit attack. Rosario overtook EME, who was the only other Defender to reach base at least three times, for the team lead in AVG, .306 to .305. Rosario now has a 7/1 SB/CS line. Snider, the Blue Jays' top prospect, was one of four different FisherCats to reach base three times. His AVG is just below the Mendoza line now.
McKae allowed more than 3 ER in a start for just the second time this year, but it was enough to boost his ERA above 5.00. Sharpless, the 27-year-old who was considered a top ten prospect for the Pirates just a year ago before he was placed on waivers this spring, made his debut in the Giants organization. A year ago he had 61 H, 39 BB and 69 K in 64.1 IP with a 4.34 in triple-A. Romero, selected sixth overall by the Blue Jays three years ago, continues to struggle in the minors. He had an ERA close to 5.00 last year in the Eastern League, and his ERA is over 6.50 after eight starts this year. He has allowed four or more earned runs in five of his last six starts.
A+: San Jose defeated Modesto 5-0
(the pitching staff's fifth shutout in their last nine games)
San Jose: LF Bobby Felmy: 2 for 4, 2B, GiDP
San Jose: SS Sharlon Schoop: 2 for 3, GiDP, CS
San Jose: LHP Jesse English: 5.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K--1 PO
San Jose: RHP Mike Musgrave: 3.0 IP, 4 K
San Jose: RHP Craig Whitaker: 1.0 IP, 2 K
Felmy and Schoop each had two of the Giants' seven hits, improving their respective AVGs to .295 and .247.
English had his second straight start without allowing an earned run, which improved his ERA to 2.34. He also set a new season best with 3 H. Musgrave and Whitaker were dominant in relief, with four perfect innings, during which they struck out half the batters they faced.
A-: Augusta defeated Rome 8-7 (13 innings)
(with just two runs scored after the 4th inning)
Augusta: CF Shane Jordan: 2 for 5, 2 BB, 2 SO, 2 SB
Augusta: LF Garrett Baker: 2 for 6, 2 2B, HBP, 2 SO
Augusta: 1B Angel Villalona: 3 for 6, 2 2B, 3 SO
Augusta: SS Charlie Culberson: 1 for 6, 3 SO, CS, 3 E
Augusta: LHP Craig Clark: 4.0 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 1 BB, 3 K--1 HR, 1 WP
Augusta: LHP Joe Paterson: 4.0 IP, 3 H, 3 K
Villalona had three of the GreenJackets' fifteen hits, raising his AVG back above the Mendoza line. He had his 8th and 9th doubles of the season, but the hat trick also raised his SO/AB ratio above 28%. Baker also had a couple XBH, his 5th and 6th doubles of the season, but like Villalona he still has a sub-.650 OPS. Batting leadoff, Jordan reached base four times, improving his OBP to .381 despite an SLG barely above .300. Culberson had a hat trick with three strikeouts and was ejected after being called out on strikes in the 12th inning, but even worse he committed three errors, raising his season total to 22 E.
Clark had his least effective start of the year, raising his ERA above 4.00. Paterson had his longest appearance as a pro. The four scoreless innings improved his ERA to 2.25.

you know every once in a while you just have to put your arm around your boy and tell him that he sucks.

It hurts you more than it hurts him?

Yes absolutely...
Think about it. It’s not like he is my biological son and I didn’t have a choice. I picked this guy. Me. What does it say about me that I picked a guy who is so poor defensively? I’ll tell you what it says. It says I am a bad picker goddamn it! And I will be damned if I let people question y picking ability! Damned I tell you! Damneddddddddddddddddddddd!

Huh, thats the first time I've seen someone get a sombrero and get 3 hits.
Don't you it's gonna be all right. But not right now.
I listened to the Augusta Game yesterday...
I usually do when they are playing early, gives me a break from KNBR. Angel, in my opinion, had a great game. He worked counts, showed a good eye, and was pretty patient at the plate. One SO call was absolute BS (as the announcer said), and the others came after he had fouled off about 4 or five other pitches. I think if you were to look at the numbers, you would see the high strikeouts as a problem. For this game at least, it wasn’t as bad as it appeared.
On to the good news, he destroyed the ball yesterday, as both doubles went up against the wall. And, on one of the SO’s, he fouled a ball strait back, just missing an HR.
The best news though? He broke a bat without even touching the ball. The torque from his swing shattered the bat. This kid is strong. Hopefully he keeps hitting like he did yesterday, and continues to work counts.

Angel smash?
The patience stuff you mention is what I want to hear. We know the guy can mash. I wanna know if he’s smart enough to adapt and get better as he gets older.

That’s almost as amazing as smelling the bat burning by Mattingly (or someone, E posted the story and I can’t find it now).

..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.
A general question - About how many games in do you start to give credence to home v. away splits?
Yes I have been looking at the Defender’s box most days. And this P.A’s around or under 100 I know its too soon yet. I am just seeing if we have a conscious on about the sample size to spot trends.
Oh yea 2-5 , 1k , 1sb & 2 rbi’s for Travis I. I am almost getting as much fun out of T.I.’s box as a Tim or Cain game. Well I never claimed I wasn’t sick or twisted.

With Dodd Stadium, look at the home/away splits of their teams over the course of entire years and they are absurdly dramatic – like over 100 points difference in average, obp & slg – it’s brutal. So, yeah, you can probably look at Travis’ away numbers as closer to reality, just like Bowker last year.
Conversely, I don’t believe any pitching numbers from that stadium, and refuse to get excited about upper level stats for pitchers until they reach Fresno.
Delaying the disappointment: I adopt Hector Sanchez because he's only 17.
Well i look at Eme’s, Copelands and the others as well. Some of these are already very large.
So am trying to pick the brains of the better sta crunchers here and come up if a decent thumb nail way to gage hitters resaults there.

I would stay away from home/road splits altogether at this point. Even a season’s worth is a small sample for any one player. Every year, there are Colorado players who do better on the road than at home, or Padres who only hit in Petco. It’s just random flukiness.
But there’s years of evidence to show that Dodd is a very, very tough environment for hitters. If you want to make a quick mental adjustment when you’re looking at stats, BP’s minors-to-majors translations suggest that an 800 ops in Connecticut is about the same as a 750 ops in the majors.
thanks for some perspective Evan.

So EME is now playing RF, his shoulder must be on the mend. He seems to be getting stronger and his splits are showing a big May.
EEEEWWWWWWW!!!
I don’t wanna hear what his splits are showing, even if it is big.

the thing with EME in RF had everything...
to do with the sunfield in LF in NH that game and there being less ground for him to cover in RF as well. Toward the end of the (night)game he was moved back over to LF. Having said that he is batting over .300.
