OT: Pro pitching at Stanford
This is a very interesting story, posted today at SFGate.com:
McGeary, 19, is a test case. He signed a pro baseball contract, with a $1.8 million signing bonus, but attends Stanford full time. It means he can't play for the Cardinal at all or on a minor-league team until next month, when he finishes his freshman year.
"It's kind of a solitary thing," Mc- Geary said.

I wonder if we'll see this occuring more in the future, and what will come of it.

Good Idea?
At first I thought Marquess sounded a little bitter when he said “I don’t think it was a good decision for his baseball or for his schooling.” But after giving it some more thought I think I agree with him. There are plenty of minor leaguers who attend college in the off-season. I don’t see the need to rush through school (on pace to graduate in 3 years) and miss the first 3 months of spring training and the season. College is important and all but is the advantage of graduating 2-3 years earlier so great that he needs to compromise his development as a ballplayer?
Coincidentally, I played at Palo Alto High in the early 90’s and there was a minor league ball player attending Stanford at the time who would come over and take BP with us. I remember he was a lefty hitter but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t Shawn Green.
