Ken Rosenthal Thinks BoSox should consider Omar
"The Red Sox appear stuck with shortstop Julio Lugo, who is earning $9 million per season through 2010, but they inquired about the Astros' Mark Loretta in spring training, evidently viewing him as possible infield insurance. A trade for the Giants' Omar Vizquel might be something for the Sox to consider: Vizquel would offer steady and at times spectacular defense, and offense that would be no worse than Lugo's ..."
I'm truly without knowledge here, and am wondering what top shelf prospect Boston might have in exchange for Omar.

I'd like a good prospect.
But likely they’d just give us roster filler. I’d rather keep Omar and hope he can teach something to the kids about defense as well as the game itself.

Omar has stated his lack of interest in backing up,
And I think the kids would get more from starting than being mentored.
Of course, I’m not buying either of the young shortstops as more than stopgaps (and probably less than that), so I don’t much care either way.

Perhaps Velez could take the most out of Omar..
He could learn a bit about defense, maybe better footwork and fundamentals. He could also learn to have better poise.

I remain skeptical that Vizquel has true interest in playing the roving fielding instructor. Velez needs dozens (if not hundreds) of hours of hands-on instruction and practice to show real improvement, I doubt Omar (or 99% of veterans) is willing to do more than drop the occasional tip.
Plus, this assumes that Omar’s fielding is a skill that can be taught rather than a natural talent. I suspect it’s far more later than former.

Omar for Pedroia. Thats fair, right?
hell the kid’s from Woodland, he could party with holm and bowker.
Tentatively adopting Dan Ortmeier. And Boom Goes the Dynamite.

Omar in Boston would be kinda cool. The Sox gave Alex Cora a bunch of AB’s over the last few years and Omar is a slightly better hitter with much better defense. So it could happen, but Lugo has actually been a decent this year hitting .285/.348/.341 which is probably beyond what Omar can do now.
By RZR, Lugo is the worst defensive SS in the AL right now. Historically he’s been middle of the pack, so he’ll probably rebound some. I’m not sure I see the need from the Red Sox’s angle.

If you had them both, you could pinch-hit liberally, or use Omar when a contact/groundball pitcher (Wakefield, Lester) is on the mound, or as a defensive replacement, or even platoon them lefty/righty … seems like a smart addition for a team that’s expecting to make the playoffs.

Lugo has had 11 errors in 36 games played
Cora is a decent spot starter at 2b & SS. Omar would be a great defensive glove for them. Though I think Red Sox Nation would look down on him for sliding into 1st on occasion.
I don’t know if Omar alone can pull us Jed Lowrie or Brandon Moss.
Epstein better not think of giving us back Julian Tavarez.

No chance in hell could Omar pull Lowrie. Unless Bavasi is running the Red Sox now and no one told me.

I love Omar
but if he could be converted into a prospect, or a real prospect and a “suspect”, why not?
Why not take Lugo too if the Sox would eat a salary in return (how about both Durham and Aurilia, or either of them with Roberts if he ever gets activated again?). Lugo could be the crummy shortstop to fill space until Bocock or Burriss learns to hit or “Herbie Washington” Velez learns to play baseball.
All of that said, I really hope Omar has one last good season in the sun and stays on his mini-terror at the plate. He makes things seem much less mediocre just by being around. I concur he’s a good influence on the young’uns but the cupboard is so bare in the farm system and he’s got more value than any of the other over-the-hill savvy on the roster (except maybe Winn who’s harder to trade) that I think a GM with an eye on the future should strongly consider getting something for him.

Why not take Lugo?
Because he will cost $9M this year, $18M over the next 2 years, AND there is a vesting option for another $9M in 2011.
If you want a crummy SS to fill space, why not just keep Omar for the year. After that you can find another crummy SS, if a crummy SS is what you want. Unless the RS are paying the entirety of Lugo’s contract, why would you want to commit yourself long term to a crummy SS?

Well if taking Lugo would upgrade the amount or quality of prospect(s) I would hope they consider it.

You know "Herbie" Velez is a nick name that is really starting to grow on me.
I know this is totally irrelevant. Just felt like saying it.

I think
I think the Red Sox should consider Omar Vizquel too! No, the Giants don’t have a shortstop to replace him, but who cares?

There's a guy in Fresno...
That can rise to the occasion and will shoot sqibs once in a while. Probably needs a good tugging to get him going.

Strikeouts are boring
That was my old sig here on MCC….
"While conservatives tell you 'leave things alone and no one will lose,' and liberals tell you 'interfere a lot and no one will lose,' baseball says 'someone will lose.' Royalties
Do I owe? Given the brevity of my MCC tenure, and the limits of my personality, I assumed that that quote most likely had been used before. I find it interesting that it was you.

No royalties due. I certainly can’t fault you for quoting one of the greatest movies of all time. Besides I like my current sig. Ever since I saw Take Me Out last summer I’ve wanted to get my hands on the play script. Some of the monologues illustrate exactly why I love baseball so much, including the one I quote in my sig.

Why not Lugo
I’m not sure if BOS would really see Omar as an upgrade over Lugo, but I’d trade them 1 for 1 if the SOX kicked in a couple million. Could rebound decently leaving BOS
Go Durham, Roberts, Aurilia, Vizquel, Winn, Lowry! The better you do, the quicker we can trade you!

We could then have two players whose contracts are disproportionate to their skill level!

Bill James does most of the thinking now.
Offical employee of the Boston Red Sox.
I’m sure he’s thinking of dumping Lugo, but the contract is what’s stopping them.
I wouldn’t take Lugo, but they are in dire need of relief pitching thanks to imploding bullpen that is Timlin and Delcarmen.
Do you know of any teams with a few legit relief arms for trade? cough cough
