We need a slight diversion. The original “untradeable” question intrigues me, and my ctrl-F skillz detect no mentions of the people I thought of…

Zito the Most Untradeable? Possibly. I’d submit Stephon Marbury, Kenyon Martin, and Zach Randolph as more untradeable. Yay for NBA salary rules.

I believe Mike Hampton will finally came off the Rockies’ books after this season. Ergo, anything is possible, contractually, in the MLB universe. If the Giants eat a little more than 3/4 of the deal, would someone take a chance on BZ? $4mil per year for him might be low enough for someone to bite. We’re on the hook for all of it if we do nothing. May as well start cutting down.

(Stated as one of the people that was cautiously optimistic Zito would be decent to good for at least three seasons.)

Just Cruzing along

IMO Jose Cruz, Jr. is one of the most underrated of Giants. No, he wasn’t and isn’t a great player by any means. But he played MUCH better for the Giants than most give him credit for.

And the irony is that even though he won a Gold Glove and made perhaps only two significant mistakes in right field all year long, we hate him because he dropped a ball.

Fans, and even management, reacts too heavily to the recent past—particularly if that involves the post-season. Part of the reason the Giants traded away Joe Nathan was because they overlooked that he was extremely dominant for most of the season. And they seemingly overlooked that primarily because he failed in the post-season.

And at the end of the day, Brian Sabean screwed up.

by sharksrog on May 12, 2008 9:27 PM PDT reply actions

Yes.

It is absolutely true that Jose Cruz’s unfortunate drop against the Marlins could have cost the Giants a championship. They probably were a bit lucky to be a 100-win team, but they did in fact reach the century mark, which I don’t believe they did even in their 2002 World Series year.

Heck, when the Giants got a big lead in the second game of the series and appeared headed for a two games to none lead, I thought they were at least going to advance to the next round. But it wasn’t to be.

Still, while we can blame Jose Cruz for the series loss, it was actually a shared responsibility. And while Felix Rodriguez pretty much got blasted the previous year, Tim Worrell and Robb Nen didn’t. And there is no question that trio lost the World Series for the Giants.

Livan Hernandez got a lot of the blame too, but if Rodriguez, Worrell and Nen hadn’t all three failed for what I think was the first time all year, Livan wouldn’t even have been pitching game seven, since it wouldn’t have been necessary. And while Livan gave up a bases-loaded triple IIRC to put the Giants down something like 4-0, the Giants wound up scoring, what, one run? So if we’re going to blame Livan, we should probably also blame the Giants’ hitters.

But the Giants had the Series won had not Rodriguez, Worrell and Nen figuratively dropped the ball after Dusty Baker literally flipped it to outgoing starter Russ Ortiz.

My point is that if we get on a guy’s case, we are going to dog him and underrate him. Maybe we’re just making him a DIFFERENT type of underdog, sort of an underrated pseudo-canine.

My point is that Jose Cruz, Jr. makes a convenient target. But IMO not such an accurate one. If I’m not mistaken, Jose’s OPS was higher than anyone else in right field for a few years, and he DID play well enough in the field to win a Gold Glove. Has any other Giants outfielder won a Gold Glove while playing with the Giants since Barry Bonds? And we all know it has been about a decade since Barry deserved that particular type of hardware.

Jose Cruz, Felix Hernandez, Marvin Benard, Sidney Ponson, Shawon Dunston—the list goes on and on. My point certainly isn’t that any of these guys were great Giants players. It is merely that they weren’t as bad as we characterized them.
